Earning money for need is not materialistic but when your happiness and sadness depends only upon materialistic things, like if someone praises you become happy , if someone said bad about you you become revengeful. You like to show off your achievements rather than enjoying it by yourself. When you get money you become happy and you suffer loses you become sad. Thus your emotional power is governed by materialistic things and you do not have control to govern them. That's why 8 number people chaplusi karne wale logoan ki bataon mein jaldi aa jaate hain, or un par blindly trust karte hain. 8 number people become anxious if things don't go their way and become calm only if things go their way. You are not owner of yourself you are guided by materialistic things which makes a difference. In short Aap materialistic things ke gulam Ho or unke badshah Nahi.
