    Part 2 of the Congo Remasters, this one focusing on the Battle of Boende, the combined operation of 51 and 52 Commando in late October, 1964.
    I feel like this video holds up pretty alright but the HD does add a lot, the video is 40 seconds shorter now but that was because I wanted to avoid a lot of the gratuitous gore of the original which really didn't age well.
    But anyways, the video, enjoy.

I ordered (my men) to give me this bag, the prisoner went mad. He fought so hard that three Catangians struggled to subdue him. I looked into the bag, there were four gold rings and a document in it. I was amazed. It was a diploma from a Czech University in Prague, Medical department. I ordered the captives face washed, the photo was right. My "savage" graduated medicine in Prague..."

    It always amazes me how today we ride around in our up-armored Humvees, MRAPs, M-ATVs, etc... wearing body armor and ballistic helmets. Meanwhile, back in the day, they rode around in close contact with the enemy in open-top jeeps wearing just uniforms and berets with an occasional steel helmet thrown in for good measure.

    • @axelpatrickb.pingol3228
      @axelpatrickb.pingol3228 3 роки тому +85

      Because none of the enemy has capable anti-armor weapons in possession at the time. Hell, around the same time period, the VC is still armed with WW2 surplus and some bootleg copies until they were uparmed in 1967. Even the IED wasn't widespread until after the Vietnam War.
      It is unfair to malign modern day mercs for their armor. Nowadays, rebels have capable arms to punch unarmored technicals...

    • @USN1985dos
      @USN1985dos 3 роки тому +55

      @@axelpatrickb.pingol3228 I was talking about the modern militaries. But really I think it's more about the risk averse nature of the upper level of commands than the desires of the average infantryman.
      Around the late 90's and 2000's, militaries started trying to make their soldiers highly survivable by issuing and requiring the wear of ceramic body armor, composite helmets, and various shrapnel-resistant add-ons like collars, shoulder armor and groin protectors. But in turn, that weighed troops down heavily.
      Most soldiers, or at least the ones I served with, wanted to wear the bare minimum possible. So we would buy our own plate carriers and then opt for the smallest body armor plates allowed. Flexibility, endurance, and mobility are more important in my opinion.

      @orygungeeksolitude1380 3 роки тому +12

      Personnel getting kitted out in armor was extremely cost prohibitive until recently. Even in the early 2000's, up armored vehicles like a Mercedes or even a Mitsubishi Pajero cost well over 75k. And as we all know, government being as efficient as it is, will gladly penny pinch. Therefore the sheer volume of fire used to suppress an enemy combatant was the name of the game. You can't shoot while getting shot at.

It's probably the heavy contrast of beautiful piece of art accompanying piece of harsh reality which in this case is war full of suffering and death. It just immediately makes me focus on the facets of life, how extreme it can get in both direction of greatness and atrociousness and how people's experience on this planet range from one end of the spectrum to the other often mainly due to luck or lack thereof.

    This is a nice video, image quality is improved, however I still like the original with Roland the Thompson gunner more. In this, the footage is centered around the actual fighting, rescuing and securing of the town, and omits the atrocities, which makes it more palatable, shall we say. I'd recommend showing this to new people first, and then the heavier stuff if they're interested. But, due to this, this lacks the sobrieting 'punch' of the original, and I feel that's essential to understand what happened there.
    I watched Addio Africa (in Italian with subs, as there were comments about how the American dub changed things) after discovering this channel, so I can tell to those who haven't seen it that these fighting scenes are in the last 30-20 minutes of the film, the rest is about how the transition, the departure of colonial administration happened. These include the warcrimes. It's an utterly mindblowing movie, if you consider that the crew went there and filmed during actual genocide. And they don't pull away, they show the bodies. There are two things tho. First, there were claims that some scenes were staged, because they seem too sensational, like the skull in that puddle. I can't approve or disprove those claims. Second thing is the tone of the film, which I can't quite put my finger on. On one hand, it's anti-colonial, showing the backwardness of the colonial elite, portaying them weak and outdated, but on the other, it mercilessly tells how fucked up the locals can be and that the British laws kept the wildlife untouched. Like, they show how the new gov portioned the white farmers' villas out, but where once lived a few hundred, they put in 10000. On top of this, the locals couldn't make do with the European houses, and completely ruined them. Some of these scenes go so far, they resemble a 19. century book about Africa to me. Anyway, I definitely recommend it, if your stomach can handle it.

    The film quality 👌. The original film is a little difficult to watch impartially but the cinematography is outstanding! Really shows the struggles of post colonial Africa! Should be played in museum’s.
