    Congratulations on your transformation from a beach expert to a desert expert.
    Recently, you have really shot the desert so beautifully that it makes me want to travel there!
    I thought salt appeared at the seaside, but I was surprised when it appeared in the desert. Nature is really amazing!
    That natural swimming pool is so beautiful. It’s great to swim in it. It must be fun to float!
    If you bring an air pillow, you might be able to sleep. You can try it next time!
    I really enjoyed this episode, thank you very much for sharing! 👍🥰🙌

    Amazing how that area looks more like it's on Mars or another planet than in this world- and it's SO dry that there are areas of it that have received NO recorded rainfall whatsoever since the earliest records began being kept for that region over 400 years ago! And yet, people have been living there for thousands of years before this. San Pedro de Atacama was already a thriving town when the Spanish first arrived! Oh, and despite the harsh aridity, there are a surprising number of plants and animals native to the area.
    What a place you've found for us! Did you ever imagine it could exist (much less that people could have lived there) before you ventured there? Thanks for sharing your time there with us!

    • @JumpingPlaces
      @JumpingPlaces  6 місяців тому +2

      We didn't realize how big this unusual area is, you can drive for days and you are still surrounded by the bizarre landscapes. Definitely was surprised when i read that indigenous groups lived around the area. I think there are many natural springs from the ground which allowed them to live there, in san pedro de atacama there are many streams flowing through the town so i imagine it is all coming from under the ground

    When i hiked the Valley of tge Moon last year, our tour guide said we could lick the salt crystals in the rock columns, so i did. We also got to see the sunset at the same vista point Carol and you went to. It reminded me of Dante's Peak in the Anza Borrego dessert of California. I do agree with you that Atacama has some similarities to Death Valley which I've visited several times but Atacama is even larger with flamingos and guanacos, villages and geysers. I did not know about the crystal blue salt lakes you visited though. If i visot Atacama agsin, for sure id like to visit those blue salt pools. I've been yo the Dead Sea, and it's not crystal blue - its muddy brown but you do float in the water. Since you and Carol enjoyed the Southwestern region of the USA, i recommend you try and get permits to visit Havasupai in Arizona. The lotto for permits is offered every February 1st if i recall correctly. I was lucky enough to visit twice in my lifetime and its still remains one of the most beautiful places i have visited.

    Good video, I hope you liked Atacama (you can visit Puritama Thermal before you leave if you want to relax). I also suggest visiting the Chilean side of Patagonia if you have another time, it is something totally different from the north: Pucón, Termas Geometricas (the best hot springs in Chile), Lake Llanquihue and Frutillar, Río Blanco Waterfall Hornopirén, Marble Caves and General Carrera Lake, Cochamo Valley, Churches of Chiloe, Pumalín National Park, Queulat National Park and Hanging Glacier Falls, Conguillío National Park and Rainbow Lagoon, Carretera Austral, The Baker River and Patagonia Fjords (The only ones that exist in South America like Quintupeu and Comau) and obviously the iconic Torres del Paine.

    Very cool. Atacama lives up to its reputation as the driest spot on Earth. Like you were saying, it reminded me of images of the landscape sent back from Mars. Have no idea how you managed to cut your own hair! Good job by the way! When you guys were floating in the water it look like 50% of your body was above the waterline. I don’t think you floated that high out of the water in the dead sea. Chile does look a lot like death Valley. One of my favorite places. Infrastructure there looks good. Wind, solar road conditions and electrical lines. Maybe not so much on the water. 🤷‍♂️ Carol, love that you’re such a good driver! Chris, how are you making out with your drivers license?

    Another excellent and informative video. You did well to rent a car and make hikes! The rocky ground is probably the result of the massive saltpeter or sodium nitrate mining effort during the 1800s. This was a thriving industry and even a war, the War of the Pacific, was fought over it between Chile and Bolivia and Peru. The mining effort came to a fairly abrupt end when a couple of German chemists invented manufactured saltpeter in the early 1900. I hope you will have a chance to see the mining ghost town of Humberton, near Iquique, which was abandoned in 1960. You will be able to see the British Cemetery, which is quite well preserved because in the desert nothing deteriorates.

      Cheers! yeah chris has had some weird gut issues over the past 7 years and at one point he pretty much couldn't eat grains or vegetables as it would cause an allergic reaction and inflammation in his body. Over the past year he has been mainly on a carnivore diet and doing intermitted fasting (skipping breakfast) which made a huge instant improvement with his health. Lately it seems he is handling veggies and grains pretty good again :D

    I thought that this desert was as desolate as Mars. If you remember the war between Bolivia and chile over the desert, they went to war because the desert provides a lot of gun powder and copper, so chile went to war with Peru because Bolivia didn’t have a Navy and Peru had signed a treaty with Bolivia, in 2004 Bolivia is still trying to recover the “coastline” they lost to chile. The way it was described was waterless, because of rain shadows

    Obrigado+Obrigada Pulando Lugares.....trabalho em equipe.....Watched this video at 1080p60 HD on a 5ft x 4ft monitor in Bangkok....
    The Atacama landscape with blue sky was stunning and the music and editing are signature Jumping Places quality....the salt pool was so buoyant and you had it all to yourselves...
    0:55 -> $53US per day for the immaculate SUV at that isolated location is a very good price.... 17:56 -> Why wouldn't they just post a note on the outdoor menu saying: Closed No Water
    Carol looks awesome....glowing Gucci energy -> 6:47/18:33/19:32/24:39/ !!26:55!!/19:43 joke!...that's not Carol

      Bangkok nice! One of our favorite capitals by far. I think they didn't close it because they were still selling drinks, but i guess they were not able to cook anything.

    Pls, If you can, I would love to see some nighttime sky videos or pix. Clear vision of the full soutthern hemispshere. You both are in an area of the world where it's one of the darkest nighttime skies in the world. I don't know if either one of you have any interest in the telescopes but it would be cool. Is there a particular reason why drones are not permitted in certain national parks? I imagine there is some concern for birds but beyond that, I can't think of other reasons.

    • @JumpingPlaces
      @JumpingPlaces  6 місяців тому

      I am not too sure what the reasons are, like in this place you don't even see any animals or anything really in the majority of the places

      Hello, regarding the non-use of Drones in general in the Desert, it involves 2 issues that are very important... The first is that in the desert there are military bases that are strategic for national security... And the second is because of the scientific facilities that are located throughout the Atacama Desert... We must keep in mind that 80% of the world's observatories are found in the Atacama Desert... And their levels of security are very high, and the State of Chile has committed to guaranteeing the protection of the airspace in those areas.... It should be noted, as information, that the largest and most modern Astronomical observatory in the world is being built in the Atacama Desert, and the security levels are very high...
