I am so envious! I walked around Gulongyu island in August, 1985, after a wild, spine-jarring bus trip from Guangzhou, just after the requirement for travel permits was removed. I fell in love with that mystical place. Gulongyu was very different then - those fabulous mansions were bordering on derelict and had been broken up into many small apartments,. That walk was an inspiring blend of the sights, sounds and smells of old China and the historic luxury of pre WWII and revolution China. The fact that Mai Don L’au (McDonald’s) now has a presence there is sad.
Thank you very much for the wonderful video! The reason Xiamen is called the piano island is the own ship of pianos per capita is the highest in China and the first piano in China
Love your video very informative and the the island looks beautiful. We are going to Xiamen this year. May I ask is Gulangyu Island very accessible from the Xiamen city town center? We are planning on taking a taxi going to the port. Is there also a train station near the port? Did you also buy your tickets in advance or you bought the tickets at port area? Thank you
The island is visible from the downtown area; It's just across a very narrow bay. The ferry to get over there is about 10 minutes and there are many that run throughout the day; very convenient. i shouldn't need to make a reservation. There is one metro station near the seaside and a short walk to the ferry terminal. Getting around is easy.
Makes me sad that some of the prettiest parts of China are the treaty ports built after the Opium War (and largely to facilitate the opium-for-tea trade). A lot of the companies that had offices on Gulangyu (and the Bund, and Xiamian in Guangzhou) still exist, like Jardine Matheson, Swire, HSBC, Sassoon, etc.
Don't be sad, my friend. The treaty ports after the Opium Wars are beautiful and an important part of the Chinese history, but that pales in comparison to the rich history of China, not to mention what is currently going on in this county. It's what fascinates me; the old, the new and the future.
I was in Xiamen 2 years ago. The Fujian people are one of the nicest and friendliest people in China. And damn good food too.
Totally agree!
I didn't get a chance to sample too much of the food, but i will agree that the people are amazingly friendly.
Fujianese here. Didn't expect my hometown being mentioned on UA-cam lol
😂 Fujian people are not nice. 90% Chinese mafia are from there
I walked that entire island! One of coolest places I visited in China.

It was a beautiful place and it's obvious the tourist infrastructure is improving.
It’s called Golden Arch now in China, and what’s wrong with the fast food? When tourists get hungry a simple hamburger could satisfy them
WAS THERE FEW YEARS BACK. A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND!!!
Hi Rojo ,
Nice place you visited.
Please enrich us with more.
More to come! I've got a couple of cool videos in production now.
Thanks for sharing. I am going there next month for the first time. Excited.
It'll be a good time to visit. There is a lot of history there.
Another great entertaining video. It's nice to hear some history about the place.

Is street and restuarant food more expensive there?
I found it was on par with the rest of China. The island food is a bit more expensive though.

You clearly love China have you learned the language to any extent?
My Chinese should be much better than it is; i have been lazy. Still, i learn something new everyday and I'm proud of my progress.
