It just brings tears to my eyes looking at this. We were so young. I remember doing all of those dance moves. No guns, no knives, no fighting, just straight up dancing! Oh yeah, I tried to do one of those moves the other day and almost ended up in the emergency room. Just can't do it no more! Oh well I have my memories😳😳😳😳

I'm 24 and this is probably my favorite dancing movie of all time, Breakin' being the runner up. I remember taking hip hop classes in elementary and middle school. In the main office/waiting room area we had one of those small CRT TV's and one of the three movies we had was Beat Street. I'd play that movie literally any chance I got before class started and to this day, I still feel my soul light up whenever I see the Roxy battle. Truly a timeless classic.

Fell in love with break dancin in the early 90s. My neighbor (who was a high school breaker at the time) introduced me. Eventually I could work my way into shuffles, flares, headspins and windmills. This movie blowed my mind when I first saw it on a recorded VHS 25 years ago. speaking as one who went through it at just the right time
      YES IT FUCKING WAS............HELL YEAH
Although.... You need to understand something else
      1. This is a movie
      2. The way an actual break war would go down would be more violent , Now when i say violent i don't mean guns or knives or fists, because that was the entire point of why we had break wars.
it was to settle our differences in a non violent way , but... LOL.. you gotta really fucking understand ,w hen you hated some cunt with the utmost intensity and he called you "TOY" which means (Absolutely fucked and a poser) it wasn't a game
No, the reality of the break wars is that was it deadly serious and there were times when we thought some bloke was gonna break the rules and punch the other guy in the face because they really got in each others faces while dancing , you would watch at times and think..... He's definitely gonna fucking hit him
      BUT.. THEY NEVER DID
so yeah it was fucking awesome and we were proud to be able to tell our parents aand the cops (if they listened) that we were not fighting , even though most of the time that's what they saw
it was not uncommon for cops to see like 50 kids having a break war and moving in and saying "break it up" and even arrest a few kids and when we asked what we were doing they would say were starting trouble and fighting in the streets
and we would tell them , NO , WE WERE DANCING, NO ONE GOT HIM IT'S JUST ABOUT OUT DANCING THE OTHER GUY (they never listened)
so it's not exactly like it was in the movie, it was a lot more intense and you could see the hate in the guys eyes that you were battling against,
but then again , you could have been breaking with your mate and it was all in good fun
BUT YEAH. DEFINITELY AWESOME TIMES AND TO US IT FELT LIKE A FIGHT AT TIMES, WE REALLY DID TAKE IT SERIOUSLY
and if the other crew lost, the rules were simple.. you had to shut the fuck up because you got showed out
IT WAS OUR WAY OF SOLVING PROBLEMS WITHOUT FIGHTING

It seems like yesterday, when this was filmed.. I used to hang in the roxy every friday for what used to be Hip Hop Culture night, orig on Thurs.
A few corrections for all of you interested..
    1) Its called Breakin, not breakdancing
    2) what you call " windmills" were originally named continuous backspins!
    3) The 4 elements of Hip Hop are: DJing, MCing, Tagging, and BBoying.
I was privledged to be hanging out with RSC back in the day at 99th and Amsterdam Ave...
