Boy Abunda dissects Toni Gonzaga’s controversial interview with Bongbong Marcos | ABS-CBN News

- Veteran TV host Boy Abunda took an academic perspective in dissecting his former co-host and known close friend Toni Gonzaga’s interview with presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos.
Abunda, who is also a Communication Arts educator, enumerated the types of interviews, ranging from contrarian, investigative, educational, to promotional, among others.
Referring to Gonzaga’s controversial sit-down with Marcos, the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Abunda said, “To my mind, it was a friendly, almost familial [interview].”
“To a certain point, it may have been a PR interview. I am not sure, it is a guess. This is an interpretation,” he said.
Speaking with ABS-CBN News, Abunda then gave his take on why Gonzaga’s interview with Marcos has been “polarizing,” firstly pointing out that the subject is a contentious figure to begin with.
Abunda also discussed his recent interview with former House speaker and aspiring senator Alan Peter Cayetano, who has been criticized for his involvement in the forced broadcast shutdown of the TV host’s home network ABS-CBN.
Abunda revealed that he had set out to be contrarian, with the raw conversation lasting four hours, and with only half an hour of the interview making it to the final edit.

Ang naunawaan ko sa interview na ito ay:
1. The intent of Toni's interview is not directed towards proving who's right or wrong. It was just a casual interview to know more about her subject. Nagkataon lang na isang Marcos ang subject niya for that episode, a very controversial person lalo na't papalapit ang eleksyon.
2. Kung sisisihin natin si Toni Gonzaga sa pagkukulang sa pagiging investigative ng kaniyang interview, bakit hindi natin usisain ang mas malalim na pinag-ugatan nito. Bakit hindi natin sisihin ang justice system ng Pilipinas sa pagkukulang nito sa pagpataw ng hustisya? Bakit hindi natin sisihin ang sistema ng edukasyon sa Pilipinas na nagkulang sa pagpapaliwanag ng katotohanan sa kabataan?
3. Kung hindi tayo magkakaisa sa pagkakaroon ng iisang judgement hinggil sa Martial Law, hindi natin talagang malalaman ang katotohanan. Mas magiging prone lang tayo sa historical revisionism dahil sa pagkakaiba-iba ng pananaw.
4. May kaniya-kaniyang judgement tayo tungkol sa Martial Law na nakaaapekto sa ating pananaw sa mga taong naging bahagi nito.
Overall, Mr. Boy Abunda's statements aren't meant to clear anyone's name, even Toni Gonzaga's. Ang kaniya, lawakan natin ang pananaw natin sa mga issues na mayroon ang ating bansa dahil nakapailalim dito ang mas malalim pang mga issues na dapat talakayin. Dapat tayong magkaisa kung gusto nating malaman ang totoo dahil kung hindi, paulit-ulit lang tayong mamanipulahin ng mga taong gustong baguhin ang kasaysayan.

Thank you Tito Boy for this very enlightening session. My biggest takeaway from this is that, there are very polarizing POVs that came up in Toni's interview. One for Marcos and one against. BUT! Martial Law isn't just about the Marcos'. It's not about just one case. It involves our justice system, our educational system, and why we are so hungry for Toni to "bring justice", when in fact, that's her own platform. "Bringing justice" is the job of all of us, and it is a systemic problem.
Toni can do what she wants with her platform. When people ask her why she didn't interview Bong Bong on the sins of his father etc etc, that's NOT HER JOB. That's the job of our justice system/educational system/our system, in general, to investigate and make those right. She did a friendly interview with Bong Bong and with ALL OTHER CANDIDATES. 😁
I hope Tito Boy can make short educational content about this topic in his channel so that many people will understand at lumawak ang kaalaman. So much respect to you Tito Boy. Hands up!
The interview speaks beyond politics and division rather it speaks fairness and it highlights a story of a father and a son , a father to his son, and a son to his father. It’s beyond Marcos, it’s bigger than politics. Well done Toni!

Sila 'yon at opinion nila 'yon. Walang sa perspective na sinasabi kadi it varies depende sa exposure. It is best to have our own perspective and not be a copy cat kasi we can fully defend our stand even if questions are turned upside down. The response na "basta lang" in never enough there must be a valid reason behind any prinsipyo and it matters a lot. And it always must be relevant and should make sense.
To borrow Chesterton's words:
It is important to make common sense common. Whatever is the "prinsipyo sa buhay" it should stand on its own and must never be dependent on anything.

free speech is different from giving someone the opportunity to distort history. if she interviewed bongbong about other topics, those that would not allow him to tamper with reality, this interview would not be as controversial as it is. the problem with this interview is not about who she interviewed, but rather, the way in which she conducted the interview. she gave someone who is known for lying about his credentials a platform to essentially romanticize the governance of the late dictator. free speech is about sharing one's opinion freely; revising history is not an opinion, it is a choice. not here to spark a debate, i just want to shed some light on why i think people are furious about this.

The interview was just about his personality and personal experience as a child growing up with his father. Why did Toni interview BBM??? The question is why not? Toni was doing a series for the people who are expected to seek government post and it would make her look bias if she wouldn’t include BBM. The interview is for the people who supports him anyway and it did not promote anything about BBM’s candidacy nor talked whether the sins of his father is true or not. Ms. Toni Gonzaga’s interview is geared more on BBM’s life! Her interview is not setup to demean BBM and to asked about past events he was not involved! Overall, Ms. Toni Gonzaga’s interviewed with BBM is so inspiring and very professionally setup! Toni shows she is courageous, no fear and exercised her rights to do what she wants to do as long as she is not stepping on someone’s head!
Tito Boy matter of fact before watching your vid here, I watched just last night the BBM with Toni and it never even dawned on me that her interview was hostile, probing & in my perspective it was good, friendly & very informative at that & I did enjoy every minute of it! I'm sorry to say this but I hope/wish that some of our kababayans should try to be open-minded or broadminded and try not to have a mind-set bec BBM's late father did this & that etc. Like you said Toni has the right to choose her own platform & gosh let's not blame her or bash her just because ppl did not like the Marcoses or what happened decades ago and try not to have that kind of mindset! Actually I didn't even know Toni has her own show until I came across the interview last night after watching another BBM & his wife's video which gave me an urge to search for another BBM vid here (having enjoyed the other video done by Ms Aster Amoyo), and came across the Toni's interview with Sen. The people who are against or don’t like the person being interviewed, already have their minds set to be negative toward the interviewee all throughout the process regardless of what topic/s to be discussed. Anything the interviewee says will never satisfy the interviewer which usually leads to heated arguments almost all the time. Not good & never effective at all in order to get more relevant issues & facts fr the interviewee. This is a very true attitude of almost all Filipinos about this subject. Meron na agad tayo masasabi tungkol sa tao eh Di pa nga nag uumpisa yong interview session!

Toni's interview was more like a lifestyle type of interview. Its just that people are not expecting a political person that influencial to be interviewed that way
thing is, why is the timing so convenient for the channel to get into politics when it was meant to be a "lifestyle" one? Why allow your channel to get into politics if you're not yet equipped with values and discernment of what happened and what's gonna be dangerous when touched? What if BBM decides to be blatantly bad in the future and looking back to now, the sympathy Toni and Marcos was able to solicit in the video becomes contributory to a bad future? It's not as if may time machine si Toni para i-rewind and mangyayari. Point is, don't touch things if you don't know how to fix it when damaged. Mag-ingat at kahit may right to feature anyone, maging discerning naman dahil katumbas ng right ang responsibility din of using the platform carefully. Kung gustong i-interview si BBM, sa tamang paraan. Wag biased at tandaang may mga utang na galing nakaw pading ndi nababayaran ang mga Marcoses na yan.

skl I ask my mom about that kase naabutan niya daw panahon ni marcos my mom admitted that during marcos time di nila naranasan maghirap kase mura ang bilihin but nung nagsimula martial law sobrang nakakatakot daw kase sobrang higpit na parang kala mo araw araw may gera dahil lagi daw may mga sundalo sa sa labas ng bahay tsaka maingay daw yung mga helicopter and yung mga di daw sumusunod sa tamang oras na kailangan lahat ng miyembro ng pamilya nasa loob ng bahay na pag nakita sa labas yung isa kung hindi huhulihin babarilin daw.
