    I’ve found that spinning on a surface with a bit more traction makes for fewer scary mishaps. A nice large sheet of vinyl flooring from the home improvement store is a great practice surface. Thanks for the great videos!

      Yeah that sounds like a good plan. The floor i was spinning on threw you off very quickly if you did the slightest thing wrong. Vunyl flooring sounds good! If I could throw some down outside when I wanted to practice on the spinner, even better! Then I wouldn't fear breaking the television either haha

      Seconded. My old flat had wooden floors, and the spinner used to shoot out from under me a lot. A friend of mine uses it outside on the tarmac, guess it'll get a bit pitted, but looks quite stable in her vids.

    I struggle to get into the hook position on ice. I always lose my balance when I do it. On ice, I was taught to push and throw myself towards the direction I'm going, then swing my right leg from the back to the side and place it in the front. Perhaps I don't have the right technique.

    Great video! My stronger leg is the right one and I like to spin clockwise (when I say spin I mean 1 or 2 revolutions 😞 just starting to learn) as I’m just beginning I feel like I could just spin to any side but definitely feel more comfortable spinning clockwise on my right leg but if I were to jump (like the tiniest jump) I feel like I would be more comfortable jumping counter clockwise so weird? 💙⛸

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 роки тому +2

      That's a little bit unusual to want to spin one way and jump the other! I sometimes find that people who feel this way, feel this because they used to do another sport (like ballet) whenre they spent a lot of time turning the opposite way to their on ice jump way !
      It's very very rare that someone can jump both ways on the ice! But I have seen stephane lambiel do double axels and triple salchow both ways with ease!

    I wonder how everyone’s doing having to have time off the ice? I’m finding it hard at the minute because I miss it so much! What’s everyone been doing to keep motivated? I’m hoping we will be able to skate again sometime soon but it still seems like it’s a long way off yet. Does anyone think it’s possible to social distance at the ice rink and if so, how?

    • @KxNOxUTA
      @KxNOxUTA 4 роки тому

      Our season was about to end anyways and would resume before October. I'm kind of glad for the breather although I still miss the ice.
      I was wondering about social distancing. I see a ton of problems. Such as the cold moist air, masks not really being an option and space being a luxury for the rich and powerful 😂 However, looks like several medicaments are currently being put to work. And they seem to help with heavy symptoms. If test go well, we'll return to normal life possibly even by September or so. Since the lack of medication for patients with too heavy symptoms is the main reason there's shutdowns in first place. It's going to be alright.
      A lot can be done with a break. And motivation wise, now is the best time to get tons of advice from professionals who're offering free streams via ISU etc.

    • @tranquilitytranquility1407
      @tranquilitytranquility1407 4 роки тому

      I find it very hard to stay motivated, but we started zoom classes with my coach and it helps. I don’t know when it would be possible to skate on ice again. Maybe they can reduce the capacity to allow for more distancing, but then it doesn’t work out financially. I think masks are not a problem so long as I can actually skate! I saw pictures of people skating in masks in South Korea.

    • @KxNOxUTA
      @KxNOxUTA 4 роки тому

      @@tranquilitytranquility1407 Maybe it works for beginners, but the moment you move a little more, masks are really a problem. They make it really hard to breathe and you're also supposed to switch them when they're getting too moist from your breath and in the moist surroundings of the rink, masks might end up doing more harm than good. Not to mention dripping noses are so common, people will pull them down all the time due to that. That makes them touch theit faces. 😂 It's really complex. If there were easy answers, rinks (and a lot of other things) would be open.

    • @leannemartin9137
      @leannemartin9137 4 роки тому +1

      Laura no way could social distancing work with a public session, and if they were to limit numbers for that, the rink would be running at a loss....the same for even private training...while you could definately social distance, it would be financially detrimental to the rink. It’s so hard, when all you want to do is get back on. Counting down the days is hard when you don’t have a date when restrictions are going to be lifted, and made worse by the fact some other sports are being considered for re-opening..

      Interesting conversation here, I was speaking to Stefano recently (he was my first guest on the live stream) and he is back on the ice teaching his students in Berlin, but they are only allowed on the ice for 1 hour per day. Glad you liked the video! I would recommend that you make sure that you have the ball of your foot on some part of the spinner. Hi, Thank you for the great tips on starting off. These are much harder than spins on the ice for sure. I really appreciate your safety tips for wearing shoes, and also the warning about getting off the spinner when things go wrong instead of trying to "save it"! A safety tip of my own is to put masking tape on the bottom of the spinner to cover the rocker. A plastic spinner on laminate flooring was just way too little friction -- with the tape, it still spins very easily but doesn't slip out so easily. Just replace the tape when it starts to wear out.

    In the last 4 years I worked hard on my flexibility and I started training and practicing some tricks off ice around 10 months ago, and even got a spinner a few months ago and already got pretty used to it! I see that skaters usually spin to the left which is weird to me cause it's so much easier for me to spin and do tricks like the scratch spin or camel spin when I spin to the right on my left leg
    I just wonder, how hard is it on ice? Is it easier learning spinning on ice than on a spinner?

    Do you have any tricks or tips for people who's not used to spinning? Because I get dizzy all the time.

    • @markmcnabb4777
      @markmcnabb4777 4 роки тому

      Hi Steven, Spinning is something that your body needs to adapt to, but it takes time and regular practice. I don't normally get dizzy from spinning anymore (been skating for many years), but if I take a couple weeks off I can feel it! So at the start just try to spin a 2-3 rotations a few times a day and do it everyday. Before long you will see that you can do that without getting dizzy, then you can add a few more rotations. Keep doing that just adding bit by bit until your body adapts to it. And when I am talking about spinning here, it can even be just turning by stepping around smoothly on two feet while keeping your upper body and head steady. Don't spot, and when you feel dizzy just stop.
      The coaches video here about starting on a spinner would be great practice because you start by doing just one rotation at a time. Maybe you can do two or three of these in a row, before you start to get tired and feel dizzy. Then just stop and try again later after a rest. After you can do a few of these single rotation exercises in a row without getting dizzy, then add on the open/leg forward position and do that combo until you can do it well without getting dizzy. Soon you will be on the last step!
      Also be sure to practice the steady standing position that he showed on the spinner. This is a very good exercise for strengthening the core muscles needed for spinning. You can even do it off the spinner standing on the ball of your foot. It works well that way too.

  • @claudianowakowski

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 роки тому

      Thank you! haven't used the other type of spinner since I was a child. I would love to get my hands on one now to see how it compares. I think that it does translate well to the ice, it is really good for finding your centre and understanding your position. It's also 10x harder.

    • @claudianowakowski

      @@IceCoachOnline Here you go on amazon: www.amazon.com/Metal-Spinner-Ice-Skate-Training/dp/B004FXFGV6/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=ice+skating+spinner&qid=1588584574&sr=8-7

      I swear, the first time I saw one of these, I never saw the bearing based spinners ever again. Glad to hear the video helped you out! It's hard to say without seeing your camel spin, but my guess is that you are not correctly positioned over your standing leg, possibly you free hip is not open enough which is making you fall into the circle too much. You should try to work on bracing that free side up and over the skating side. Practice balancing in the position on the spinner without spinning. If you struggle to do this it will be very hard to do when you add the spinning in.
