Hi August, found your page years ago while overwhelmed and trying to find a system to help me sort things out. I remember the excitement of actually finding content that matched the vison in My brain- unfortunately i was too overwhelmed to implement. Now im in a much better place and prepared to dedicate the time and attention needed to use your system. Not sure when i will catch up to this video - but Im going back to vids 4 years ago to get the fundamentals. Thanks again for prioritizing quality
That's awesome, Shelly! Life is multi-dimensional and has some complexity, so the systems we use to manage it will inevitably have some complexity as well if they're going to be effective. Obviously, we want to minimize that. Learning a new system also does take time and effort, but it pays off in big ways - so you're on the right track. Keep up the awesome work, just one piece at a time, brick by brick, not all at once. In a few months, we'll be launching a more structured training program with a lot of support; if that's of interest. It will address the same topics here but more comprehensively, and in more depth - with a community, and with access to me and my team for guidance. Regardless, everything here on the UA-cam videos conveys the same principles and approach. Keep making things happen!
The recurring items not appearing until the day they're scheduled is why I gave up using that functionality, so I'm glad you've been telling Notion we need to see them in advance! (I also landed on the same workaround of just rescheduling the recurring task to the next time it's due.)
I completely agree Mike, and I'm confident that we will get there at some point. Notion has a very aggressive feature roadmap in development. Step by step, and we'll take things to a new level!
Talk about an honest, thoughtful and efficiently empathetic intro! I subbed before it was even finished. Having just found your channel, I'm looking forward to exploring your content!
Thanks, Jeff. Awesome to hear our paths have crossed. I call it like I see it and have a lot more insights to share soon. Thanks for joining the journey!
I'm super excited to be back too! Thank you so much for your support and enthusiasm here, it means a lot to me. I have so many ideas and things in the pipeline - can't wait to share them. Onward! 🚀
I found watching this video to be a valuable investment of my precious time. It serves as a powerful refresher of the incredible power of Notion, after the rapid development of over the last year. I particularly like the way that you always explain every nuance so clearly.
Thanks, Stephen. It makes me super happy to hear that this was of interest to you. I know it was a long one, but I wanted to cover all of this in a single compilation - means a lot to me to hear it was of value. Thank you!
Right on! Yes, a bunch of Notion-focused content is coming soon, and then we'll broaden the scope. There's so much in the pipeline. I really appreciate your support, and I'm glad that you find it valuable. Onward! 🚀
That's awesome, Kathy! I'm glad you already have a lot of these up and running. And thank you for the feedback - it means a lot to me and it's super helpful. Hey August Fans - i've watched a ton of videos of his, August glad you're back and refreshing things! My stuck is probably a VERY simple one haha, currently around all the actions are they more like A) are all the actions / tasks being are created and sitting in one spot pulled into the WHOLE system from only one master list in the action database linked to projects? Or B) The actions are created in database/lists near the projects, then they be pulled back across the platform into 1 action list/master list and served up daily? I feel like understanding this piece is what I'm not * clicking *.to start trying to set up a few things.
Hi Chelsea, all the action items are in a single database. Some of them are added individually, typically in the action zone dashboard. Others are added within the project pages - which are pages inside the projects database. Ultimately, all of the actions or action items are inside a single database together. They're just sorted and filtered differently depending on what relations they have to other databases and what properties they have. Hope that helps!
I can only image how you, August would kill with your setups if Notion were this powerful when you first started. You're probably still killing it, I'm behind in my Notion video binging.
We're all getting better and better as we go. This evolution is a big part of why I'm so excited about the next level of Notion Life Design program that's getting close to releasing - Notion has changed in more fundamental ways than I think most people have realized. I think a lot of people are building with the old Notion model in mind. Seems like you have a sense of that, very observant.
Hey August - as always, great content with a lot of valuable information. I will need to go back to the Project Automation section to double check my thoughts. From your presentation it sounds like I could establish a recurring project template with a series of automations for action items. For example, I preach a sermon each week. Am I correct in that understanding? So would I be able to create automations like action 1 - Establish Main Point (assign date) - Action 2 - Establish context ( make this action active after action 1 is checked) - Action 3 - Write first rough draft (assign date) - Action 4 - Edit rough draft (assign date) - Action 5 - Rehearse Sermon... Then each week select Preach Sermon in the Project dropdown template list?

@@JosefKarthauser Sorry for the confusion. Notion Life Design is the name of the course and membership community that teaches how to apply and implement Pillars, Pipelines, and Vaults (PPV is the Notion system, NLD is the training program). Hello August! How are you? I’ve been following you since a long time ago. I was mesmerised and inspired by your PPV system, and I honestly have watched your first youtube series a couple of times in order to build my own system. (It has a couple of tweets around since my work isn’t ENTIRELY built on projects, so that nomenclature is a little bit more difficult to build on). Well, apart from this first introduction, I would like to know if I can DM for a couple of doubts and invitation! Best wishes!
Hi, thanks for the feedback. Glad that you found it valuable and you're well on your way to building out your system. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking regarding DMs (I don't think UA-cam has DMs), but feel free to post any replies or questions here.
Thank you August. One thing until now (maybe I’ll do pther question seeing alL the video): the solo tasks (no linked project) must have a Do date as you can say, but which status should have? Active? or maybe also future or next up for example
Thanks for the clarifying question. In PPV, all solo tasks need a status, and it will almost all the time be "Active". The only exception is the "Waiting" status - if you've handed it off to someone else and you're waiting for them to do something before you can proceed or you're blocked on it for an other reason. Other than the "Waiting" instance, all solo active tasks will be "Active". "Future" and "Next up" statuses are only for action items in Projects. It's important, if you're using the "Waiting" status, that in your weekly review, you have a point to check the waiting items to ensure none of them get lost. If the person you're waiting on never addresses them, you need to check in on them at some point. Of course, this only works if you're actually doing weekly reviews, which you should. If you're not doing weekly reviews, then you could put a "Waiting" list toggle in the Action Zone and check that periodically, at least once a week. But essentially, all active solo Action Items will have an "Active" status. Then the more important thing is what prioritization they get. But that's just about how you prioritize them throughout the day. Hope that helps!
Great video as always! I appreciate you mentioning how automation is not the "holy grail" and tinkering to much with them can become a distraction! Very much looking forward to the AI video!
Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you found it valuable. Yeah, sometimes we just have to be direct about what the level of value is - but there are some gems in there. And yes, I'm excited about getting into AI as well!
Interested to know how people are adding more granularity to the knowledge vault. I have created some useful topics in the vault but sometimes topics have more details that I don’t think creating more topics would be the best solution since they are linked e.g. a topic of gardening could have articles about lawns, trees, summer plants, etc. I considered using sub topics but not sure if that’s the best idea. Anyone doing anything useful here?
Yeah, we've talked a lot about this in the NLD membership. There are a couple of ways to do it. One is to create sub-pages and a dashboard inside the topic that has sub-pages and/or toggles that categorize the sub-elements of the larger topic. The other is to create a hierarchy in the database entries themselves using a parent-child relationship - which Notion does via sub-items (a standard feature in databases now). The latter is more complex to set up, but it lets you link other elements of your system to the sub-items directly - since each is a database entry. There are pros and cons to each approach. Typically, I'll do the dashboard with sub-pages. Most often, for most people, that's the better solution - certainly simpler and easier and brings more clarity.
No, but with the relaunch the training and membership are going to take a different form and have more accessible price options. The template and the NLD program are deeply integrated. And the results that I'm interested in delivering with this program cannot be achieved with just a template. People put too much faith in templates - templates are limited. Life transformations takes more than a template, but a template can help. So, we have a deeply integrated program that includes template, training, support, and frameworks that go beyond the template. Hope that helps to clarify.
For recurring creation of new pages, I actually use the Shortcut-feature on the iPhone to create a new daily note with the help of the Notion API. If I used the Notion way of automatically creating the note, there's no way to set a proper title for the note. With automated shortcut on my phone, it automatically create a new daily note, and gives it the title of that days date. This way when I wake up, I have new daily note waiting for me. EDIT: This might also work around the limitation with recurring templates and automations.
That's a great thought - it sounds like a savvy approach. I appreciate your sharing it here and perhaps others on the iPhone may be inspired by this. Thanks!
I use the shortcut on my iOS too. I have a voice prompt that allows me to transcribe text to voice and then create an action item based on what I said. It’s not perfect because it can’t change some of the properties on the page that creates but at least gives me actions that aren’t associated with the project and so they turn up in a “to be processed list”. It means that as I think of things that need to happen, I can easily get them in the system even if I’m walking or driving.
I have run into every limitation you outline in the 1:02:00 "needed notion enhancements" section. I really want the ability to set future times and the ability to target a change in a rollup or formula. Not having those have really hampered my ability to finish building out my business CRM and management software for my service businesses. Having automations in its current state is very nice, but having those changes would really be a game changer. Glad to have you back!!!

@@morne.besterI think last time I tried it, the title was @today 😕
Yesss
I have run into every limitation you outline in the 1:02:00 "needed notion enhancements" section. I really want the ability to set future times and the ability to target a change in a rollup or formula. Not having those have really hampered my ability to finish building out my business CRM and management software for my service businesses.
Having automations in its current state is very nice, but having those changes would really be a game changer.
Glad to have you back!!!
