Nuclear engineering Masters student here. That was hands down the best explanations of radiation I’ve ever seen that didn’t make me want to fall asleep. Cass is so incredibly talented. It’s astonishing she didn’t accept payment for that amazing bluejay. As Indiana Jones would say “IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM”. She deserves all the love she gets and more!
One small oversight, objects don't just give off infrared radiation, they give off all types depending on temperature. This is why a hot piece of metal glows red, the frequency of its radiation comes into the visible spectrum.
Yeah, it's just that the hotter the object is, the more black body radiation it gives, and the higher frequency is it's peak. But it gives all frequencies lower than the peak and some range higher than the peak.
I'm currently still a RadTech student. And this is totally accurate and relatable that a lot of people have a big misconception about radiation. If I try to explain to them about radiation. It would take up a lot of time because it ain't easy to put it in simple terms that they would understand. Good vid btw.
14:10 To be completely fair, the Soviet engineering wasn’t the worst part. The worst part was the Soviet bureaucracy doing a test on *high core output* and then *turning off the safety procedures*
Recently defended my PhD dissertation in plasma physics, but the animation at 9:14 has had a bigger impact on my mental image of a photon than 7 years of grad school ever did.
As someone who works in Radiation Protection and loves to find things wrong with videos on radiation...well done. Its not as in depth as the material we cover for my job but you got one big thing right about ionizing particles. Alpha is by far the worst to get inside you. Transuranic elements meaning usually Americium or Plutonium actually like to stick to your bones when taken in to your body so an extremely small amount can be very bad for you due to both being Alpha emitters and the fact that they seek bones meaning they like to give people leukemia. Just one breath of the wrong air or one cut can change someones life if an alpha emitting isotope is involved. Beta also does this neat thing when shielded by dense materials where the energy it loses in that material is converted to high energy x-rays called Bremsstralung radiation. Its similar to Cherenkov radiation except instead of the photon it gives off being a neat blue light its an x-ray photon.
Idk why this made way more sense than literally every science class I have ever had but you tie this to the concept of entropy more concisely than literally 4 years of science classes.
