The writers of the old testament especially the book of Joshua and Deuteronomy were known to exaggerate things so sometimes they words are not literally what the mean as per my understanding. Our God is divine and he's laws are perfect. In Deuteronomy 25, 17-19 we can see the Amalekites were the provokers, known to kill women and children and King Agag's sword made many Hebrew women childless; This needed to be stopped otherwise, the prophets of the bible and even the Messiah will not have a chance to be born. I don't believe God intended for the innocent and they children to be killed because as we can see the same amalekites /Canaan appears again after the time of Samuel.
