- As per the title, a collection of beer adverts from the 1970s and 80s. I wouldn't say any of them have much merit, being mainly witless and/or sexist - the Harp being particularly nauseating. Lager of course predominates, it being in the commercial and logistic interests of the large breweries to sell this type of beer - cheap to brew, easy to keep, virtually tasteless, heavily promoted and over priced.
All of the major British breweries featured here are now defunct, having been bought out by foreign interests.
Look out for Geoffrey off Rainbow in the Double Diamond ad. - Розваги
OMG! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! In the Ben Truman's Advert @ 10:30 That is MY MUM stroking the dog outside the pub! My family worked on the Hops every year and they were asked to take part. Very few men wanted to be on film so most of the men in the advert were women. It was filmed at "Davies Hop Farm", Claston Farm, Dormington, Hereford.
In the opening scenes of the advert it is my great aunt & second cousin throwing the sacks of hops onto the cart. I had only ever seen the photos of the shoot. I thought I would never get to see the whole thing. Now I have! It's a shame a lot of the folks in the advert have now passed away. Has brought a story that was told to me as a child to reality. Thank You.

I am an American vintage beer commercial expert, if I am anything. After watching these commercials I am in awe. There is love here, that is missing from the colonies
@Plays in Vain Drinking culture is always strong here in UK.From the Irish to the Scottish and the English a night out always included having a pint or twelve.
Schubert in the Kronenbourg advert is played by actor Alan Lake, who was the third husband of Diana Dors. He committed suicide in October 1984, only a few months after Dors' death from cancer.
jesus and apparently was a raging alcoholic. I just read about him and Dors, that may be the saddest thing I've ever read.
Great selection of nostalgic ads. Worth viewing again. Not much to be said for some of the beverages. Some were for brown waters masquerading as beer and not doing a very good job..
Does anyone remember an advert with Annette Badland as a waitress; someone famous walked into the pub and the tag line was ‘just act natural’, following which herself and her partner shouted in a Birmingham accent ‘alright!’ ??
A completely different world. Looking at these adverts you now realise how unrecognisable Britain is in terms of pubs, drinking culture and culture generally. These adverts are the country as I knew it. Just simply facts.

A fantastic selection, some of which I recall vividly. But one that is omitted is for Worthington E, where a whole pub sings "Goodbye E..." It was based on the film Oh What Lovely War (1969). Would like to see it again. Do you have it? And watch all the detail in the last Hofmeister advert! Amazing.

The adverts I have been looking for are the John smiths big John adverts and the harp wedding gaff when he ends up speaking to the brides parents
A great collection, although most are from the 80s.
I have been looking for the old 70s Whitbread ads, but can't find them anywhere - "It's Tankard that helps you excel..' and 'Trophy bitter - the pint that thinks it's a quart!).
One of them had Graham Stark as the barman serving an American tourist who asks "Are you Lord Tankard?" which was pretty banal, to be honest.
The one with the bear, that reminds me of the Cleveland show.
You realise when you go through old offair recordings just how crucial TV advertising was to lager's rise in the UK; by the early 1980s ads for other drinks seemed laughably archaic compared to lager ads which, however nauseating they were, were at least modern. It's hard to work out which are more offensive; the ads that created that particular prole culture, or the 1990s ads which express the middle-class embrace of that culture with a wafer-thin facade of "irony".
I wonder how many of the pubs from the ad starting at 1:58 still exist.

Ahhh, Chas and Dave at their best. Down to Margate. Courage best. George the bear for Hofmeister too. Some of these beers are No longer brewed or not in general circulation any more.
I didn't know Mr. Bean was in some beer ads.
My favourite beer ad starts with a man walking up a dark, dismal, wet street in an English village. He goes into the pub, nods to the barman and is served with a beer. He drinks this slowly, then hears someone calling his name over and over. The scene then starts to shimmer and dissolve, and we are above a turquoise bay in the tropics with a yacht anchored below. The view zooms in to the deck, where a man is lying sleeping on the deck with an attractive woman shaking him and saying his name over and over. He slowly wakens up, then says, "I've just had this wonderful dream". I can't remember the beer or the date, and have been unable to find the ad. Can anyone help?

Amazing how few of those brands still exist today.
Same situation with classic American beers. Pabst, Anheuser-Busch and Miller-Coors bought many of them out.

Blimey. I'd forgotten how beer was basically only for the working class man in the late 70s.
They had to get rid of the Hofmeister 'follow the bear' ads because the IBA ruled that they were too blatantly aimed at children ... quite startling to see that mixed in with the 1978 Ben Truman ad, and think of how little time (at least in the strict linear sense) actually passed between them. Rather a shame that the "when summer gives up her bounty" Taunton Autumn Gold effort from 1976 isn't here, mixed in with one of their ads from a decade later.

+robin carmody if they were aiming lager at kids with the hofmeister "follow the bear" adverts then it worked with me! As i was about 7 years old when the ads first came on and thought it was well hard and cool as fuck to drink, and inperticularly to drink lager! Cos whenever my parents went to a pub (or were in a situation where someone they were with suggested it) if me and my brother were with them i would find myself mythering my dad to give me the end of his pint so i could try it! Now i thought i was the only one doing this until i found out quite a few boys had done it in my class because of the cool bear adverts, so yes hofmeister DID influence kids to drink lager at that time!!!!
That's why they stopped using the bear in the end. it may have encouraged young drinkers.

Colin died on 2nd November 2015, aged 81.

Hofmeister is back, two englishmen bought the label and brew it from Bavaria now. You can order bottles and mini kegs online

Beer advert, set on a wild stormy night, old bearded fisherman in full sow-wester rows across the harbour and bursts into pub saying (in strong west country accent): "I've never known a night like it..."..
And then the advert ends with him also saying : "...and I'm not looking forward to the journey home, neither!"
I've been searching the net for this but can't find it (nor remember which beer it was!!!)

Great to see these old adverts again but some of the beers was horrible lagers many just cheap overpriced lol Skol Yuk and Harp even worst

The smoking ban, so bad it DID put the pubs out of business! (Well in stockport anyway!!)
It has done the same in the US as well.
Oh fuck, That Romford Ad (presumably Thames/LWT-only?) ... just as offensive as any bigger-business lager ad. I have a 1985 break where it is juxtaposed with an ad for one of the 'Street Sounds' albums, and it seems even worse, as if a dead culture is being kept alive even as a genuinely exciting new one is being born. The Charrington IPA ad is harmless, but the voiceover seems like an object of scientific interest in the age of Estuary and Multicultural London English.

After 'Trainspotting', it made me laugh to hear a Scotsman enjoy a beer because it has a 'smack' to it.
