- Symphony No. 34 in C Major, K. 338, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1780, and completed on August 29. The work is scored for 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings. Although most symphonies have four movements, this symphony has only three, which was still common in the early classical period:
1. Allegro vivace, 4/4
2. Andante di molto (più tosto Allegretto), 2/4 in F major
3. Finale: Allegro vivace, 6/8.
The symphony features the fanfares and flourishes typical of the "festive symphony" or "trumpet symphony", which is characteristic of Austrian symphonic writing in C major. This is the first of Mozart's C-major symphonies to exhibit this character, but the style would be revisited in his subsequent two works in this key, the 36th and 41st symphonies. The first movement is written in sonata form but also contains many styles and formal aspects of an Italian overture. There is no expositional repeat. The expositional coda contains an overture-like crescendo which is not included in the recapitulation. The development is based entirely on new material. The recapitulation on the exposition's first theme is abbreviated and interrupted by a brief development of that theme. Finally, the movement's coda contains nearly all of this first theme creating the appearance of a reverse-recapitulation common in Italian overtures. The second movement in F major is scored for strings sotto voce with divided violas and a single bassoon doubling the cellos and bass. Alfred Einstein advanced a theory in the third edition of the Köchel catalogue that the Minuet K. 409 was written at a later date by the composer for this work. However, there is no proof in the sources to support his thesis. Also, K. 409 calls for two flutes in its orchestration which does not match the rest of the symphony. The finale is in sonata form and features energetic tarantella or saltarello rhythms.

Nice "liner notes." This symphony deserves much more frequent performances. I am especially fond of the finale. It is among Mozart's most Italianate compositions and a rare gem. Listening to it is like a drive in an Italian sports car on a challenging mountain drive where one feels the pull of G forces in every twist and turn.

I've been listening to all of his symphonies in order, and to my ears, this is, by far, the "biggest."
He's gone from frightening precociousness to a stunning mastery...
...and I can see Symphony #40 and the Jupiter Symphony just over the horizon...
The performers in this recording are the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, in case anybody is curious.

Deceptively simple. The ingredients that make up Mozarts music are not fully understood. It's the sad arrogance of music theorists who claims to understand it. Complexity is other than counterpoint and crazy chords. The music of Mozarts age is slowly beginning to be appreciated due to the research of Robert Gjerdingen but we are only scratching the surface.
Actually the arrogance started in the romantic age but we are still in the grips of that mentality.

I always thought the opening movement of this and the opening movement of his next symphony, the Haffner sound somewhat similar.
The finale is one of Wolfgangs best. Just pure inspiration and originality, and the best movement of the symphony.

1780 - Mozart is just about to enter his artistic maturity. So many fantastic works come from the period between 1780 and 1785 - Symphonies 35 and 36, the C Minor Mass, the Abduction from the Seraglio, the D Minor concerto... amazing. I feel like Mozart is saying in this symphony "hey, pay attention, shit's about to get really real."

He was a master of development, and became a master of orchestration,. Geniuses are borne, not created. Mozart, Bach, Shakespeare, Picasso. Don't laugh, but I see some Mozart in Kurt Cobain, Composition wise, that is.

People say this is REALLY when Mozart got serious about music. I couldn’t disagree more. Hear his fourth violin concerto, or even his first string quartet.
I would say that 34 marks the beginning of Mozart's period as master composer of symphonies. There is certainly something very different in 34 compared it to his earlier symphonies.

34-ю симфонию До мажор Моцарт закончил 29 августа 1780 года. В симфонии три части, однако знаменитый музыковед Альфред Эйнштейн (не путать с известным физиком и скрипачом-любителем) полагал, что менуэт К409 был написан Моцартом для этой симфонии. Может, оно и так. Для любопытных я даю ссылку на запись этого менуэта во втором комментарии.
Стиль, в котором написана 34-я симфония музыковеды называют «праздничной симфонией», потому что в составе партитуры две трубы in C. Дескать, если в Австрии в партитуру вставляют две трубы, то это для праздника, такое для них характерно. Не знаю, в чём там дело, возможно в Австрии на трубах в будни запрещалось играть. И правильно! Работать надо - сапоги тачать, клёпки клепать, пашню орать, а не трубы слушать. Подробнее надо спросить у Антона (Антон Сафронов (Anton Safronov) , он пояснит.
Впрочем, у симфонии в самом деле характер праздничный, торжественный. Так что, к 23 февраля вполне подобающая симфония.
Итак, после праздничной парадной, можно сказать, фасадной, первой части звучит нежнейшее пасторальное Анданте. За военно-парадным фасадом, стало быть, цветочки и пастушки. И, раз Анданте пасторальное, то, понятное дело - в Фа мажоре.
Ну, а настоящий праздник начинается в финале - тут уж пляшут все - военные, горожане, крестьяне, девушки с букетами, старики и старушки, дети, коты, собаки, жулики и прохвосты. Стремительная жига на шесть восьмых. Кстати, заметили, как часто в финалах у Моцарта либо три, либо шесть восьмых?

The slow movement is at the speed Sir Thomas Beecham chose, ignoring the marking, I believe, but I was not aware he ever recorded it. I heard him play it on the radio in about 1954. I immediately chose the movement to be my favourite piece of music.

+Geoffrey Gardiner I have checked the Beecham 1940 recording and this is it. Beecham takes 11 minutes of the slow movement. This one is between 7 ad 8.Only a genius can risk ignoring Mozart's markings. Beecham was a genius.

The beginning sounds a little like La Marseillaise. Similar to Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture Finale.
La Marseillaise was actually used in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, used to symbolise the French Troops led by Napoleon against the Russian Forces.

Where did you get the idea that it was from 1940? It's performed by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, recorded in 1980 on the Philips Records label.

Don't post works without performers. Average contemporary performance you took off a CD downloaded from a source you've forgotten. It's listed 2nd under Beecham's #34 or I wouldn't be here. Not that you would know a good performance if it bit you, I expect.
