Great review, however, Nissan reliability has really gone down in the last decade. For example, the 2013-2016 Altima is known for high amount of CVT failures, see the Altima CVT settlement at www.altimacvtsettlement.com. The Maxima and Sentra also have high rate of failures. The CVT costs range from $4-7k to replace. I would never buy a Nissan again as the quality has gone down and the reliability is low in comparison to other brands.

The one thing that I hate is that Chevy doesn't make their safety tech standard unless you go up to the higher models (blind spot monitoring was somehow still an option and not standard), but apparently that's changing for 2020 starting with the upcoming Trailblazer
Can't stand the Malibu. Absolutely gutless and the transmission does it no favors. Yeah the Altima has the CVT, but when paired with the larger engine versus the Malibu it at least feels smooth and effortless.
Shorter is related to height. Wider is related to the length between the short sides (like driver door to front passenger door), and longer is related to the length between the long sides (front to back). Pretty sure that's what she meant.
Neighbor had problem after problem with theirs and finally dumped it and got the Mazda and have been so happy. As a Nissan owner I hate to say it but they are really cheaply made cars anymore, I'd gladly take a Hyundai or Kia over a Nissan car any day (unless it's a GTR/370z).
Pretty standard mid size sedan. It doesn't bring anything new to the market. Toyota and Honda already got their suite of safety senses and Nissan just following the trend.
@@ALMX5DP Yes, midsize sedan is very competitive and also shrinking due to crossovers eating up it up. Having standard blindspot/cross traffic as standard is a good feature that I've yet to see in this segment. Also look at the 2020 Sonata, it's bringing a full digital screen instrument cluster. That's something new to the segment since majority just have partial or just analog dials.
@@Ziakel well with the shrinking segment, why would a manufacturer put R&D into such a vehicle? Wouldnt it be prudent to allow others to take the risk, find out what works and what doesnt, and implement that once costs come down some?
Funny you say that when Toyota and Honda still have less safety features than Kia and they both have lower reliability scores than Kia too. Toyota JUST got Apple CarPlay. That’s in my ‘15 Optima. Five years ago. Toyota and Honda are resting on failing laurels and their sales show it around where I live.
@@ALMX5DP It's shrinking doesn't mean that's dead. What's there to R&D when it come to feature that on the higher trim down trickle to lower trim and then eventually becomes standard? We're talking about bringing something new to market and this particular segment. Look at TGA and how it's scale across Lexus. That saves a lot on R&D and it's up to manufacture to implement features that help them compete in the segment. And why would let other manufactures take the risk and eat up the market? This segment is literally "you snooze you loose"
That bonnet gap is simply unacceptable. It's ugly, suspicious, questionable and simply horrendous to look at. Nope, all that sexy profile and comfortable front seats still does not make up for the major issues that it has, (a): Lack of rear seat headroom, (b): well that bonnet gap.
Just rented a 2020 SL for two days. I hated it! My 2015 Optima with 60k miles is still MUCH better than this. I can’t believe people would buy this car. It’s loud, inside and out, uncomfortable and so boring to drive. There is no Apple CarPlay? In 2020? My 15 Optima even has Apple CarPlay. Not to mention it’s just ugly from the back. It looks so cheap and uninspired. Plus CVT? Epic fail.
I have been driving this since a week, a rental ls version. Pleasantly surprised, it’s quick handles well and gives about 30 mixed mpg. It’s not a bad car at all. I am a huge Lexus guy had a maxima in the early 2000s but I m impressed with this car.
Yep,I just had mine 3 months, a 2109, 3 yrs old had, 3.580 original miles.Great car, very Comfortable!! I'm impressed with the comfort n handling,& SAFTY; she was right about the hood design I hate it ! Hood looks opened,on edges. The stock rims, I'm not a fan of,so I upgraded the rims, what a difference! I bought this over a 2019 Cadillac RWD. Same price range...
CVT is real good concept if designed properly with the main purpose of fuel efficiency. Not fun indeed, but that is why well suited with Hybrid. However Hybrid e-CVT in Toyota/Ford/Crysler has no belt, Fully planetary gears. Toyota used no clutch, just gear and magnet and their e-CVT is extremely reliable, more reliable than conventional 6 or 8 speed. I do not like e-CVT droaning noise but it actually accelerate faster than 6-8 speed with the same engine. It is about subjective feeling, not actual acceleration. Corolla 2.0L has real gear for the launch and simulated 7 speed CVT, try it and you know how CVT can be fun.
I've owned a 2019 Altima for the past 6 weeks. It is a black 2.0 vc-turbo. Here is my (mostly subjective) opinion: I live at altitude (between 5k and 6k feet) and test drove both the 2.5 and 2.0. The 2.5 was, well... adequate. It was able to get up to speed on on ramps and handled city driving in a predictable and safe manner. The turbo version trades a bit of the predictable manner for a some turbo lag and a lot more acceleration for on ramps and highway passing. MPG: After taking it on a 2000 mile road trip, it got 39 MPG (95% highway, with average speed between 75 and 80 mph). I have not yet completed a day to day city driving MPG test yet. Everyone complains about the CVT. Of the 12 cars I've owned, this is the 4th turbo (Mini, Mazda, Mitsubishi), and only the 2nd automatic transmission (BMW). The CVT here feels no worse than any other autos I've driven (mine plus plenty of rentals). It is a little noisy under acceleration - and the noise isn't particularly pleasant. But it isn't too loud, and is pretty quiet at speed. The turbo lag is a bit annoying, but I've never met a turbo that didn't lag. Nissan did a decent job of trying to get the most power quickly in high throttle demand situations versus smoother power delivery at lower demand situations. But there is always room for improvement. I've found that the more time I have behind the wheel, I'm learning more about how the computer responds to different throttle inputs at different speeds (i.e. how much power I will get, and more importantly when it will be delivered). The turbo model does have a sport mode, which changes the 'shifting' map, which does help if you are wanting more spirited driving. Not sure if the 2.5 model has it. I've heard multiple complaints about the 'floating' C pillar. This is personal taste, and I actually like it. Unfortunately for a black car, that styling feature isn't there. As for the hood gap, I guess it isn't as noticeable on a black car as well, because it has not bothered me. Speaking of personal taste regarding styling, this is the first Altima (re)design that I've liked at all. Of all of its competition (mentioned in the video), I only really like the styling of the Altima and the Kia. The others range between meh, and slightly ugly. Mostly meh. The driver aids can be very convenient, but have significant flaws. The active steering lane assist (or whatever they call it) is annoying. I find that I am fighting with it the majority of the time. It wants to be in a different part of the lane than I do. It does not center itself very well, and can want to be very close to one side or the other. Which is not only disconcerting, but unsafe when there is a car in the other lane. This tells me the active steering system is only using input from the cameras, and not the blindspot detection sensors. It is very easy to overpower the active steering, but it takes a conscious and constant effort. For the situations where there isn't a battle for control of the steering wheel, typically when there are relatively straight highway miles, one tends to have minimal input, and let the car center itself. But wait. That's no good either. The car detects that you are not steering (suspecting you are not paying attention... or nodding off) and sets off an alarm, which is a flashing dash light at first, then is soon joined by an audible warning. This results in driving that ranges from a delicate ballet of providing minor steering inputs every 10 seconds - even when they are not needed, to an angry argument when lane position is in dispute. I've used the full driving assist features offered on the car in varying conditions, and find that its failure rate is higher than I had hoped. It has a hard time in construction areas, can easily be confused by road repairs or fading lines, and is pretty much useless in most city situations. At least twice I've had the active steering fail to turn the wheel as the highway curved (crossing a dashed lane line), but the lane departure warning went off. Aren't both using the same camera? Luckily there was no one in the other lane. In another situation, I was using the cruise control (about 40 mph), which was matching the speed of the car in front of me. The car ahead changed lanes, and traffic was stopped ahead. The Altima kept going at 40mph, and started to slow down a little bit when it detected the car stopped ahead, but did not brake very hard. It then set off an audible collision warning. I decided not to complete the test, and hit the brake myself, which stopped before a collision. I would have thought the cruise control system would have braked harder sooner, to avoid setting off the collision warning. I'm assuming that the majority of car makers are purchasing the driver assist systems from one company, and making minor tweaks for their models. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I am assuming that most of the other makers that provide these aids have pretty much the same issues. Tesla being a notable exception. Theirs may be better, but we know it is not perfect either. It is hard to evaluate these features in a short test drive, hence the assumption. I'm hoping that some of the behavior can be improved via software upgrades. Significant improvements would likely require new system components. The heated seats work well (much faster than my previous Nissan), but the heated steering wheel could be improved. It heats up the outer portion of the wheel quickly (what would be the tire portion if it was, well, a wheel), but does not heat up the inside portion (where tire would meet the rim if it were a...) This results in an uncomfortable sensation if you are gripping the wheel normally. Part of your hand is touching something quite warm, while another part of the same hand is touching something cold. Just wait for the head to equalize. Still, better than no heat. Over all, aside from being a little annoyed and disappointed about some things, like the driver aids, I am very happy with the car. It looks good (IMO), inside and out. It has plenty of power, while delivering good fuel economy. It handles the road well - compliant but not mushy; steering is crisp. The tech features (other than mentioned here) work well - USB charging ports, iOS/Android connectivity, speed limit sign detection, blind spot detection, remote start, etc, etc. The interior is roomy and comfortable, including the trunk. Well, I don't know how comfortable the trunk is, but it is large.
Mussa Obad none at all. I have almost 30,000 miles. Planning on getting CVT fluids changed at next oil change just to be safe. But I’ve had no issues. Love this car.

I rented a 2019 Nissan Altima SR with the 2.5 a couple of months back. Drove it for 12 hours straight and let me tell you, what a car! Fuel economy is excellent, space was great for a midsize sedan, and the ride with the 19's is a bit harsh but nothing out of the ordinary.
Chris Escobar the brands were really touchy for me unfortunately. And the base model lacked some basic features like auto climate control and such. Apple car play didn’t always work :/. But zippy car. Nice room.
Comments on UA-cam from actual owners or anyone who has driven one are few and far between. This comment is typical of someone who has driven and/owned one of these. Everyone else is repeating a minority view. Nissan sold 209,000 of these in 2018.
Reviewers and car enthusiasts have strong feelings about CVTs but the general public doesnt care nearly as much, or even know what difference it makes. In my experience, after having an Altima for several yrs, driving a traditional automatic felt weird to me, especially at slow to moderate speeds and stop and go traffic. The CVT would just go. In a 0 - 60 scenario maybe its a drawback, but it felt adequate for me. Either way, the majority of my real world driving is more like 0 - 15, back to 0, zero to 20, 10 to 30 etc. The traditional automatic constantly gear shifting took getting used to again. However, long term reliability is another issue.
Anytime I see someone speeding, tailgating, weaving through traffic, or just generally driving like an asshole, it somehow always seems to be a Nissan Altima.
Maybe if you have issues setting behind yourself, you might need glasses, visibility is fine compared to competition. Also, I feel most people these days care more about fuel economy than speeding around everywhere, especially in a family sedan.
I rented this car and it’s not that bad. She made it seem like the car is shit. I drive the base trim and it was a fine fun zippy car and visibility is great.
Ford is getting rid of the Fusion but it also an AWD model for SE. I think pricing for the SE AWD starts around 25xxx. Especially if you think about leasing.
If leasing I’d recommend looking at some near-luxury AWD cars since sedans aren’t selling as well they are trying to move them. Audi A4 Quattro or 3 Series X Drive probably aren’t much more expensive to lease than an AWD Legacy.
I have a 2017 Altima, it never gave me any problem though but its not very solidly built car specially from interior prospective. The seats make creaking noises, AC is noisey, the bose sound system is not up to the mark. The body Paint is getting marks from nowhere. I drove lexus sedan other day and i felt altima's turning radius is unnecessarily more. Only good thing about altima is its good on gas and parts are generally cheap. All control buttons are properly positioned and easy to use. Seats are very comfortable too. But Nissans quality is not good overall.
Well, you cannot compare Altima with any Lexus. May be Infiniti is closer but Lexus indeed really good. Deadly reliable, quiet, supple, smooth, and only used well proven technology. All Lexus still use conventional gear except the hybrid with e-CVT. e-CVT is completely different than belt-CVT. It is 100% gears, no clutch, no belt and extremely reliable.
I truly used to hate the CVT. But I recently found a 2011 Nissan Sentra for sale for $800, the guy stated transmission was out. Took it to my mechanic all it needed was transmission fluid. After that car worked perfect.
I got a 2019 Altima S. Handles like a dream, super comfy, love the interior. Only complaint is the CVT can sometimes be a bit sluggish to accelerate.
How many miles did you get in it and did the cvt give you problems?

Neighbor had problem after problem with theirs and finally dumped it and got the Mazda and have been so happy. As a Nissan owner I hate to say it but they are really cheaply made cars anymore, I'd gladly take a Hyundai or Kia over a Nissan car any day (unless it's a GTR/370z).
Pretty standard mid size sedan. It doesn't bring anything new to the market. Toyota and Honda already got their suite of safety senses and Nissan just following the trend.
Ziakel do offerings need to bring something new?
Please review 2019/2020 Macan S
Body color door handles should be standard on all Nissans. Chrome plated plastic door handles look ridiculous on modern cars.
We need micah back please
CVT transmissions are trash.
The interior is trying to be a Honda Accord by the look of it.
More like a Mazda6
Wow. A fully gas powered car! Way to be different
Mazda 6 is from trash inside
CVT rules! Get a life!
Nissans never looked refined. They need one more mark up.
its a turd on 4 wheels
She fails to simply do a review. She keeps trying to act like Micah.
I don't like Micah's, you loose attention to the main reason this review is about, a car, instead him
Just rented a 2020 SL for two days. Plus CVT? Epic fail.
Nissan is soon to join Mitsubishi when the phrase; "they're still in business", is used.
Same price range...
everyone since 2012: we hate cvts
nissan: whats that? more cvt?
Everyone since 2012: Gas prices are too high!
Nissan: Let me help you with that.
Here is my (mostly subjective) opinion:
I live at altitude (between 5k and 6k feet) and test drove both the 2.5 and 2.0.

I bought my 2019 Altima SV one year ago. I love it!!
Renee Caraway have you had any issues with the CVT? I’m looking into getting one as well
Mussa Obad none at all. I have almost 30,000 miles. Planning on getting CVT fluids changed at next oil change just to be safe. But I’ve had no issues. Love this car.
Renee Caraway thank you! Appreciate the response!
Me to. just got a 2019 its now October 2022, had it only 3 months had 3,580 Mi on it, a returned lease which was 3 years old, they put a custom brand new leather interior in it for me, that sealed the deal. Came with all the upgrades sunroof Etc. Black with the gray charcoal leather interior. Love the car, I think I'll keep it. I am not a fan of how the hood closes around the sides it looks open!
@@ReneeCaraway CVT WERE Supposed to be"Fixed" from earlier years, issues. They extended the warranty on the transmission also,I've heard.
I really hate UA-cam :( I went from always heating up PT Cruiser to this so when I saw the Altima I loved it, reading all these comments just makes me doubt myself , but so far still love my Altima
PT Cruiser, wow I am surprised someone still driving it today. I though they are all in junkyard from rotting/corrosion.
I FEEL THE SAME WAY! I DOUBT MY CHOICE. I've heard some things about the Altima that I don't like. I own one had it for 3 months so far so good but I do not like that hood, someone could just grab it and rip it off the car! seems like it's not closed! Besides that so far so good. I enjoy driving it.
CVT junk
The worst car with a horrible CVT transmission.., All altimas sell way...... way..... below KBB value and the reason is faulty CVT transmission. Shame on you #Nissan #FailingCVT
I have the nissan altima SV 2017 never had a problem with it and well i love it lol 😍
I just got one myself 2017 and luv it so far!! Have you still not had any problems?
@@iceey143 well right now it's just my AC it throws fresh air but not as when I first got my car but other than that, nothing has been bad. what color did you get yours?
2019 Altima... Then, 2024 Rustima
😅

Yep,19" ride rougher,it also cones with 17" bit smoother.
If you're going to talk about how sluggish and loud the CVT is, demonstrate it! Every car reviewer on youtube does this.
Eeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaan
They dont need to CVTS Are stupidddd
I have a 2019 Altima SR
I love it 😻 Despite what a hater has to say
I love the Camry and Accord also
Miguel Ircontar love mine too.
Renee Caraway your in the 6 gen Altima on Facebook aren’t you 🥰
I have a picture of it on Facebook.
Mine is black. The SV model.
Love my 2020 SR
I really dislike CVT. Nice Altima and perfect color.
I ll buy this car only for that hand rest. No car even comes close to that comfort level.
Anytime I see someone speeding, tailgating, weaving through traffic, or just generally driving like an asshole, it somehow always seems to be a Nissan Altima.
Same here lol 😂 apparently Altima translates to skyline in most of "Murica"
Honda drivers can be just as bad... more Civic than Accord.
*Honda Civic Type R*
You spelled BMW wrong.
Horrible transmission. Don't buy this car!
Its a Nissan Ultima , if you want an amazing transmission get a corvette.
I wanna be friends with Lyn! We could be chat about cars
Nissan has fallen so far from grace
Ever since Renault got involved
As its CVT falls out.
As a truck driver,I've seen more nissans that has lost control in bad weather than any other vehicle I know of, strange.
Why people say mazda mazda6. Even though mazda should go back to the 626 and 323 names.
I have an 2009 Altima, and I’m really thinking about getting a newer one for my next car
NISSAN is selling an average of 276,603 Altimas every year for past 10 years in USA. I think That's a healthy sale numbers
Maybe if you have issues setting behind yourself, you might need glasses, visibility is fine compared to competition. Also, I feel most people these days care more about fuel economy than speeding around everywhere, especially in a family sedan.
Anyone who thinks this is better than the new Accord is out of their damn mind
Upgrade to 4K cameras. Picture quality really needs to improve
Not their fault. YT compresses the hell out of these videos. It's a miracle they look as good as they do.
Ahh nissan new slogan NISSAN GOOD IF YOU LIKE HEADACHES.
I rented this car and it’s not that bad. She made it seem like the car is shit. I drive the base trim and it was a fine fun zippy car and visibility is great.
How much does the car cost.😊
The cost of the car replay back
Mazda mazda6 😬 sounded odd
It did.
I don't know what it is about Nissans but I just don't like the way they look.
DO NOT BUY THIS CAR HORRIBLE TRANSMISSION
Gabriel Villa you have this car. What’s happened to it
Where is Micah
I'm looking to maybe lease a sedan in the next year but need awd so this and the legacy are my top choices. Heard Nissan's cvt can have issues
Well good thing you’re leasing it
Ford is getting rid of the Fusion but it also an AWD model for SE. I think pricing for the SE AWD starts around 25xxx. Especially if you think about leasing.
Why lease a none luxury car?
If leasing I’d recommend looking at some near-luxury AWD cars since sedans aren’t selling as well they are trying to move them. Audi A4 Quattro or 3 Series X Drive probably aren’t much more expensive to lease than an AWD Legacy.
Jankuba Kromah not everybody is a batchsnop. Not everybody needs/wants a luxury car, you pay for the badge
Scotty says it’s junk...I agree...transmission is garbage
