    This is such an absolute way to save. I don't understand why more people don't do this. When I was in school many, many(!) years ago. My mom sent me with a lunch of egg salad, PB&J or bologna sandwiches plus maybe a fruit. It was a real treat to get to buy my lunch! I survived!

      LOL years ago the schools made yeast rolls from scratch. You could smell them all over the school. They served real butter pats. I spent ALL my lunch money in that day I could buy on nothing but yeast rolls and butter and milk. Had a tray full. School nurse called mom. I was so sick..those yeast rolls just kept growing. School nurse limited the amount of yeast rolls kids could buy after that..lol. To this day if I make homemade bread its a challenge to leave it alone....LOL

      Same here! We never had the luxury of buying a school lunch, we had bologna with mustard on bread. I pretty much just buy generic items and when fruits and veggies on sale. We have fruit trees too, so that saves a lot of money.

      Sounds familiar too, I didn't buy many school lunches -- I didn't like that gravy they drowned everything in. LOVED egg salad sandwiches.

    I grew up back in the day when eating seasonally wasn't trendy but rather just the way it was. When something was on sale, you bought a bunch of it, preserved it by canning/freezing, and used it when it wasn't on sale. You also grew most of your veggies and fruits at home and put them up as well. Still doing this. I'm always amazed when I go to Walmart and peer into other people's carts.... lots of frozen, pre-prepped, overpriced-for-what you're getting items. People in our country no longer know how to cook from scratch but could save a lot if they learned. Your cookbook is a great beginner how-to as well as for those of us who have been cooking for 50 years.

    I go to a "pick your own" strawberries and blueberries here. I get about 5 gallons of each, then freeze and make jellies. Oh and dehydrate. Saves soon much money, good outings, fresh...and 5 gallons last us all year.

    • @jodiejames5019

      @@rochellethundercloud346 Great point, I've had to put down an item or two because I was buying more because it was a stellar deal. That said, I have saved a fortune using items that were half off because the box was dented or the item discontinued. Or we got the pleasure of using a high-end item for the price I would pay for store brand. I agree, it is still important to think before you buy!

    • @vickieclark5931
      @vickieclark5931 3 роки тому +2

      @@jodiejames5019 That's true. If you were already going to buy that item, then yes clearance is the way to go. But if you weren't going to buy it then it cost you more to buy it. It's like when there are great sales at a department store. If you really need a pair of black pants and your were going to buy them anyway and they were on an awesome sale, then you just hit the jack pot and got it on sale and saved a lot of money. But if you weren't and purchased them because of the sale, that's not saving, it's spending. We all fall into that at times. We just have to make sure that we know what we are doing and being intentional.

    These are the tips that brought me to DOD maybe two years ago. These ideas really work! You can save so much money, even if all you take away from this is to buy only on sale and in season. There are a few specialty items we really don't want to give up, but we still save by stocking up when those items go on sale. If you watch your stores, you will find that sales rotate on a regular basis so you can figure out how much you need to buy to get to the next sale. Save, save, save. Thanks Tawra!

  • @vickieclark5931
    @vickieclark5931 3 роки тому +6

    That's awesome the way you explain how you do it. So many talk about making your menu around sales and then go out and buy those items. I always found that to be a bit confusing cause sometimes certain things are not on sale that is one of the ingredience. I like the way you talk about getting the things that are staples like beef, chicken, etc. when they are on sale, then you ALWAYS have beef and chicken and you just plan your meals around that. I've been doing much better with stocking up on things to make sure I don't run out and it is nice to know that I wanted to make a stirfry with some rice I can do it. I don't have to go out and buy it. I already have it and then you know that all the food in your pantry, freezer, & fridge were on sale. Buy the sales and then plan the menus with what you got at home. That is a much easier way to do it. Thanks so much

  • @madamem7856
    @madamem7856 3 роки тому +8

    You are right Tawra! It's simple! It just takes organization. Plan your meals, stock your pantry when things are on sale, eat what's in season & use what you have. Don't let it go to waste!!! I love the DOAD cookbook. It uses simple, inexpensive ingredients that you have on hand!

  • @Frugalmumdownunder
    @Frugalmumdownunder 3 роки тому +8

    Yessss! This is how we shop! People always ask, how do you spend so little on groceries when they spend 3 to 5 times more than we do. Because we eat simple. We eat what's in season. If it's not in the budget we don't get it. People just want to eat whatever they feel like, and can't work out why their food costs $350 a week. Then when you tell them how to do it they won't because they don't want to feel 'deprived'

    I have been eating a lot of beans around my place. Meat has become a "flavoring" rather than the main dish. One of my favorite recipes is a casserole made with rice, beans, cheese, corn, hamburger, onions, and taco seasoning. Because I am by myself, I am eating this for dinner all week!

      I shop Kroger markdown meat and markdown aisle they will put their markdowns meat out at different times sometimes it's out there by 8 other times it's 10:30 or 11 so hard to judge when's a good time to shop there I do like their markdown baked goods. We have a Township building in town they will have bread, baked goods and sometimes can goods I always buy my salad mixes marked down.

      Sadly, years ago, when Walmart got rid of the in-store butcher and went 100% prepackaged, they also got rid of the dated/reduced meats. Our freezer sure does miss that savings. Right before covid, they also did away with their day old reduced bakery goods. They have nothing on sale anymore. It's been all full price since before "the thing." Haven't seen any waaay far out of town chain grocery weekly sales circulars since "the thing", either. All that's left to do here is buy in season. The cheapest beef roast here is $6.47/lb. so we're down to chicken and are going more with eggs. 40 miles is my driving limit and have only shopped 4-6 weeks for decades. In rural TX, we may not have but 1-2 grocery stores in the entire county.

      My grandma used only lukewarm water and every now and then fresh cream and water. Never use soap on your face!! We actually do not need soaps, detergents, even in our hair. Vinegar water after tepid water wash does wonders!! Don’t overthink things. Simplicity is beautiful and better. Much love and blessings in Christ Jesus 🛐❣️

    Do you have any tips with feeding teenagers ?
    I have 2 teenage boys and they do not stop eating ! One of my sons will easily eat 4 slices of toast with cereal for breakfast , he is so skinny so I don’t feel I should deprive him ?
    Maybe some breakfast and snack ideas that will fill them up for longer . X

      Well...I've had 5 teens 3 boys. Pretty much I just let them eat. I try to fix things like oatmeal cookies or homemade granola bars and have those on hand. Keep things like bananas, cuties and apples always on the counter. It's one of those things you just have to get through. :-)

      Yes, my boys eat like horses! I do feel like baked oatmeal, eggs, or a Sweet potato, ham type skillet hash keep them fuller a little longer! Peanut butter on 1 piece of toast is cheaper than 4 pieces of toast, but more fat and protein to feel full. Just a suggestion, it’s hard, you don’t want them to be hungry I get it!

      Thank you for your replies . It’s good to know that it’s not just my sons that eat like crazy .
      We are from the UK (England) , I love having American meals and snacks and cannot tell you how much I have used my dining on a dime cookbook. 😃

      My grandmother would serve beans with each meal if anyone was still hungry you could have a side of baked beans or pinto beans, green beans, butter beans whatever she thought might compliment the main dish. Also lots of homemade breads, rolls and biscuits. My uncle learned to make pies. If you see they have a talent or interest try to get them to cook some. My mom's job was the biscuits and gravy. If anyone was hungry they could have a biscuit with jelly.

    My 18 yr old son has decided that he doesn't like chicken. He is a great son! But, I have suggested that he buy his own groceries :) He works and can do it. But he gets quiet when I suggest that and will eat a small serving of the chicken meal and then makes himself an egg sandwhich to go with.

      I had 2 kids do that when they were 17. I told them they can eat it or buy their own. After buying their own for awhile they decided to eat it. If they don't like it they can buy and make their own food. :-)

    I have never understood why people don’t buy what’s on sale and only on sale. I always buy store brand. People don’t realize how much money they waste on groceries. My aunt literally goes to the grocery store EVERY DAY!! 🤦🏻‍♂️ I said. Why do you not stock up? She opened the freezer and said how am I going to stock up? Half of the freezer was empty! There’s no reason for her excuses 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Update on Sams prices here meat wise. The same bulk package of both 80/20 and 90/10 ground beef is up another 2.00 from the previous 3.00 increase. Stepson smokes brisket. The same brisket he bought 2 weeks ago for between 25.00 and 30.00 averaged 60.00 this time. He bought a smaller brisket, at that price they can keep it in my book. Don't know price in store per lb on chicken yet. I have to wait for hub or someone to take me, nobody wants a semi blind person on the road. Bacon is still up by 4.00 or higher in bulk. Most other prices based on our list of previous purchases have not gone up. One item we stay stocked on long term is back down to pre pandemic 7.98 for large quantity pinto beans. It hit 11.98 during shutdowns. Milk, fruits, bananas have not increased. Butter in bulk has gone up 1.00. Green grapes soared so we just will not buy green grapes. We use club purchases for bulk as we beat the grocery store chains price wise, plus, our pups eat real meat. Texas A&M veterinarian said there are too many pet food recalls. My point there is Sams beef is a higher quality, its the only beef they will eat raw. Says alot, they can smell things like additives that we cannot. (Yea I know..not a money saver there but they are small dogs 1lb feeds all 3). Also..if you prep by buying the 25 year shelf life prepper buckets...we tried that. We got sample packets of that stuff. Decided to try them. Tore us up..we were sick. Should have taken the hint when pups wouldn't touch it. Let me put a caveat on that...we are in our 60s. Younger people may be able to tolerate..we just could not. ALWAYS buy a sampler packet first.
    When I could see to drive, I made the grocery store rounds, knew the meat counters to know when stuff was marked clearance. Sam's and one or two stores close by is all I can do now. Bulk is my best deal. Also if an item is on sale, and they are out, go to the customer service desk and get a RAIN CHECK. They are usually good for 30 days. When new stock comes in, you get it sale price. You will need to put a quantity to buy on them. They used to offer rain checks it they register. Now you have to ask. I remember paying .79lb for roast...ugh.
