Hi- I was enrolled in this course AY22-23 and yes Professor Green is the best! While 55 is often regarded as the hardest math course at Harvard, many math students including myself will tell you it is because of the workload, not so much the material itself. I must say however 60 hours a week is simply not true (not sure where that number came from!), but many of peers did report up to 35 hours a week on assignments for 55😬 For those interested in math curious about what the course entails, it’s essentially a Gaussian view of set theory with lots (and I mean lots) of summation gradient networks😭

The misinformation is crazy. Math 55 at Harvard is just calculus+linear algebra. The official title of the course is Studies in Algebra and Group Theory and Studies in Real Complex Analysis. It was also previously titled Honors Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra.
Hardest class in the country? Not really lol. If you’re gonna decide that based on dropout rate then try any circuits class or Neuro physics for example where after the first week, the classroom will go from 100 in a lecture down to about 15-20 and by the end, only a handful of people pass.
This is just an intro freshman class if you’re in some type of stem field. Like in literally every other school where you take the same exact subject in your freshman year and are considered the “barrier” classes. If you can handle it, cool pursue the STEM degree. If you can’t, switch to business management.
Harvard quite literally just has the name to it. Means nothing else if you’re taking this class as a freshman in any other top 200 college in the US or at Harvard. Harvard just means you either had the money to go or connects.

Seifert-Van Kampen theorem is a deep theorem in algebraic topology. Based on what was written on the board, I see the lecture is covering a second semester course content in alg topo. This will never appear in math 55, which seems to cover standard undergrad math + some small bits of grad math (ex. basic analysis on smooth manifolds). Dont get me wrong: that’s still a lot to cover in two semesters. But I highly doubt you actually went to a math 55 lecture to film that footage. Forgive me if I’m wrong. I go to Berkeley for math and physics, and I’d assume the expectations here are much lower than at Harvard. 🤷‍♂️

@@violett874That's because after you learn arithmetic they have zero creativity in the way that they teach it. They don't engage with students interests, which is how you engage with the student's mind. They just want to stick to formulas.
I had a math teacher which was probably my best math teacher I ever had in school and he did something similar to what is now referred to as Khan academy style. This would have been before Khan academy. And that's considered innovative 😂. Don't get me started on the overuse of calculators.
The best book I ever read for math is child craft "mathemagic". Because it engages the mind with creativity, stories (not word problems) history, puzzles.
There are very few students who are incapable of learning of great significance. It's just some kids learn differently and if you're sticking to the same formula of education, then of course you're going to get the same results.
I do agree with you however that a lot of times, teachers do not have a better education with mathematics early on.

As I watch tutorials and see others effortlessly grasp math concepts, a deep sigh escapes me. I yearn to be naturally gifted at math, to navigate numbers with ease and confidence. It feels like an unattainable skill, one that eludes me despite my efforts.
Mathematics, with its logic and precision, promises a path to understanding the world in profound ways. Yet, for me, it remains a daunting labyrinth where each equation feels like a hurdle, each problem an insurmountable mountain. The frustration of not grasping concepts as quickly as others gnaws at me. I feel left behind, like I'm missing out on something fundamental.
In school, I struggled to keep up with classmates who seemed to effortlessly solve equations and grasp abstract theories. Their ease with numbers contrasted sharply with my confusion and struggle. It's disheartening to witness the disparity, knowing that while they move forward confidently, I stumble and falter.
The pressure to excel in math, whether for academic or personal reasons, weighs heavily on me. It's not just about grades; it's about feeling competent and capable in a world where quantitative skills are highly valued. Each setback feels like a blow to my self-esteem, reinforcing the belief that maybe I'm just not cut out for math.
Yet, despite the melancholy, there's a flicker of hope within me. I'm determined to overcome this hurdle, to embrace the challenge and push myself to improve. Perhaps with perseverance and the right guidance, I can unravel the complexities of math and find my way through the maze.
For now, though, I'll continue to watch, learn, and hope that one day, I'll look back on these struggles with pride, knowing I've conquered my fear of math and emerged stronger.
