Pianist Jeremy Siskind plays the Ellington/Strayhorn classic "Take the A Train" for 10 minutes without stopping. Does it get super boring? Wait and see!
I hadn't intended to watch the whole thing, but once I got started there was no way I could pull the plug on such a finely crafted, free flowing improvisation. WAY too much for me to take in at once, but I heard a few passages that made me think "I could do a dumbed-down version of that"! What a joy to listen and learn from Jeremy "G Train" Siskind!
Awesome! I hope you get to experiment with some of the textures and styles here.
Great playing ..good lesson
Thank you, Lance! I appreciate you watching!
Loved it! Watched the whole vid
That's dedication. Thanks for watching, Chris!
G Train! Loved it.. I hope our paths cross again soon!
Dan! Great to hear from you, my friend! Thanks for checking out my will drive through the A train tracks! Hope to see you soon and keep writing great music...
Thank you!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Loved this! Loving your book too! Just started Unit 2 last night. The way you are taking us students through drone improvisations, swing rhythm and listening sessions is really unique and helpful. I look forward to working on it a little each day. Thank you G-Train!
Nice! I'm glad you're on unit 2. I'm watching the page counts on my website for the different units (I hope you're using the QR codes!) and not too many folks are on unit 2 quite yet. (PS If i haven't told you already, you can go through the book with me in a class setting starting January 24th. More info at www.jeremysiskind.com/jazzclass/)
What a master you are , the improvisation is so great
Thank you so much, Anastasia! I'm glad you liked it!
Masterful, Jeremy. That ragtime part in the end was awesome.
Thanks so much, Pau! I'm not criticizing, but just for your info, I'm told that historically, we use the word "ragtime" when it's fully written out, and the word "stride" if it's improvised. So I'd call that stride style.
@@JeremySiskind Great to know!
G train, Jeremy! Wonderful harmonic, rhythmic, melodic, and swinging interpretations! Thanks!
Thanks much!
I took the G train, man. That was great. I love your stride work - you look like you're having particular fun when you do it. Swing on!
Awesome, Mike! Yeah, stride is another gear which can be really fun! (And takes a special level of focus and athleticism!)
haha I love this, you have a few techniques I would love to have. one of my favorites was Block chords ascending in the RH with the LH following in this diminished kind of sequence.. the impromptu counterpoint was impressive thanks for posting this.
Many thanks! Thanks for checking it all out. I'll look forward to hearing what you do with it!
i have watched this as well as a ton of other vids on your channel this week, and there is so much incredible stuff on here- the amount of information and insights you provide can be really helpful in evolving my playing and getting a deeper understanding of this music. this inspired me to get up have fun and play myself and i realized i have learned enough to where i can sit and mix things up and the result wont be too bad😂i know im a stranger but i used to play saxophone but always loved hearing the piano, and a masterclass of yours gave some basic information in a way that gave me starting point to be able to finally give it a go and try it out. here i am four/five(?) years later and id hope ive learned some more about jazz piano since then haha. this was a great listen, gtrain!
Wow, this is such a nice note! Thank you so much for sharing your journey!
Very interesting to hear all of your different ideas over 10 minutes! Thanks :)
My pleasure! Thanks for listening, Jahoop!
G Train!... absolutely brilliant😀 ..Bravo👏👏
Thanks for checking this out, Matthew! If I'd known so many people were going to watch this, I would have practiced more...and maybe dressed up nicer...
That was nothing short of amazing.
Thanks, Eric! I'm glad you dug it!
G Train! Your playing is an inspiration. Thank you for sharing it!
What a God blessed musician you are Jeremy! Thank you so much!
Well that’s so kind! Thanks, Arpad!
G training for me. I watch all of your videos all the way and I love your book.
Awesome, thank you, Matt! I appreciate your eyes and ears!
Outstanding...
Love your playing! G train for life! Haha
G train for life!!! Thanks, Arnau!
Your playing makes me very 😃! Beautiful!
Yayyyyy! Thank you, Nina!
Very enjoyable 10 minutes!
Awesome, thanks David!
that George Shearing share hand sound is wonderful. Spectaculous performance, Jeremy
Thank you, Duong!
Gtrain. Wonderful mix of soloing techniques and styles. Loved it!
Awesome, Jeremy!
Thank you, Bobby! I hope you're well, my friend!
“G train” 👍👍fun and transcription worthy !! Entertaining and useful 👏👍👏
Thanks, Charles! I appreciate each one of your emojis! 😁
Gtrain! Why did you say “dribble” Jeremy. It’s Deadly (that’s old Aussie slang for Bloody Good!)..
So much creativity and skill packed into an exhausting 10 mins of wonderment.
I think I intended to say "drivel" but it's kind of like "dribble" out of the side of my mouth maybe?
Excellent Jeremy! A load of various styles on display. Sort of thing Dick Hymen used to do. Really enjoyed that. G string. I mean Gtrain .🙂
Hey, we're trying to keep this channel G-rated! 😂
G train Jeremy. Wow, your mastery of different jazz piano styles is just astonishing!
I'm going to try this...but I'll start at the 3 minute mark and build from there as my improv vocabulary isn't that great yet...oh, and stride? Um, next year, maybe. Thank you for the post.
10 minutes of playing the A Train was FABULOUS
Thanks so much, Mark!
Great rendition! Gee Train!!!
Gee train? Gee whiz! :) Thanks for listening, Barry!
G train! Already? That felt like 1 minute. Thank you so much for doing something that seems to mundane to you. I learn so much from videos like this, more than just technique. Thank you again, love your videos!
Thanks so much! I'm so glad the videos are bringing you joy!
Gorgeous!!
G Train!! Love it. Beautiful playing, Jeremy.
Sounded like your mic pre might be overloaded a bit? Got some clipping.
Anyway.. Subscribed!
Thank you, Chazwick! Yep - welcome to the channel where I'm constantly trying to get my mic balance right. :) It'll get better, I promise, but thanks for pointing it out.
I can tell u Jeremy ur the best jazz pianist i've heard it in the last decades
You should do this for some different grooves too! Would love a ballad version or a straight 8th one too
Cool! Good suggestion - very similar to @M2J's suggestion. I'll keep it in mind.
Wasn’t planning on listening to the whole thing, but wow. G train! 👏🏽
Super Jeremy🤘🏽
8:24 8:28 8:30 8:34 8:42 8:47 8:49 8:51 8:53
It looks like you really started enjoying it around 8 minutes in!
😮speechless 💗 G-Train!
Thanks for watching!
Seems very much like Aimee Nolte’s extended practice videos
I want to be like Aimee when I grow up!
G Train. This was awesome!
I didn't really like it till around 6 minutes, then you finally got into some bounce and stride. Three minutes of joy for me. That's my opinion, though.
But I need someone willing to play and be listened to, so thank you.
This is a great idea i hope you do more of this using other standards and play the melody with different grooves along the way it would be perfect for transcribing and stealing from you lol
Cool idea! I'll keep it in my head for a rainy day. Did you see my video of eight different ways to play Autumn Leaves? You might like it.
@@JeremySiskind i just checked it out. it’s a really cool idea i love it! keep doing stuff like this it really enriches our repertoire.
Amazing A train
if possible could you please add use midi keys so i see what you're playing?
Thank you, but that's not happening for me. I'm playing on a real piano and won't be moving to a keyboard.
Of course G train :) Great performance!
My pleasure, Ivan! I'm glad you liked it (and sorry for the late reply)
G Train and I listened three times
A Train 👍🙏🏽
Thanks for watching, Mark!!!
Is this transcribed?
Not to my knowledge! Want to do it?
What a fun ride-took it all the way to the G train! (Great timing for me-working on solo piano version-searched YT for examples-so glad to find your virtuoso ‘take’, and one by the Duke himself (see link), so am all set-thanks Jeremy! ua-cam.com/video/UGK70IkP830/v-deo.htmlsi=VaH3bCSNRsXoo_IN
Thanks much, Jon! Happy jamming!
G train bro
Wooooo, thanks, Nic!
G train, nice one
Thanks much, Patrick!
l'm eating this stuff up. It is dynamite. I need to see you over your shoulder like that. Don't worry; I plan to buy your books and others. You can't know I suppose how much I needed that, but its a big deal. Thanks.
g train Nice
Thanks, Stube! Happy new year!
G train all the way baby
Thanks for listening, Luyanda! I appreciate your time and ears!
G Train
Thanks much for watching, Sebby! (there should be a tune called "Waltz for Sebby" 😂 )
( that's a pun on a famous Bill Evans song if you don't understand)
🙂 . . . G - Train !!!
Thanks, James! Sending you best wishes for the holiday and new year!
@@JeremySiskind Thanks Jeremy, you also have a wonderful New Years!
