For us (our kids are 23 and almost 20), it was talking. We always talked...about everything. Nothing was taboo, nothing would get anyone in trouble. We always felt that open communication helped us get through the times when people wanted to throw things! Plus, for our kids as teens, we realized that we could build fences as high as we thought necessary to keep them away from less desirable things but we also knew that they'd find a way to get a better trampoline to see over those walls. Everything is better on your terms than someone else's. We've been very blessed to have great kids (especially considering the gene pool) but we also worked hard to have those clear, concise open lines of communication. Keep it up! Great work as always!
My wife and I are in the middle of an across the country rv trip with our two pre-teen daughters. Pulled into the KOA on the north side of El Paso tonight and fired up the laptop and your video came up on recommended section...could not have been more perfect timing! Funny how that works. We have been on the road for about three weeks and today was not a good day, kids fighting, and fighting, I lost it when I missed the turn off of I10 and couldn't figure out the "immediate" left turn lanes..profanities flew and I immediately felt bad. We all sat down and watched this video...simple and basic things that we should all remember to do. Thank You!
Yeah, we've been there too! We now try to keep drive days to under 4 hours (ish) as they can't resist poking each other after awhile. 2-3 hours drive days is the sweet spot. They do get better the longer you go. Maybe the parents get better ignoring stuff too! :)
I am a big fan of communicating to others how *I* am feeling. For example, “I had a rough commute so I’m a bit grumpy at the moment. It’s not you.” Then, my husband knows my sour expression isn’t because of him, and he knows to give me some chill time. Or recently, I didn’t feel well, so I told my daughter, “Hey, I’m not really in the mood to play because my stomach kinda hurts.” Then, she knows what’s going on and doesn’t take it personally. This really heads off a lot of unnecessary hurt feelings based on misinterpretations that snowball.
I TRULY hope more people stumble across this channel (and especially, watch THIS video). I've been binge watching the past week or so. With the exception of a few "tense moments" (no judging, things happen LOL) you've all been very supportive of one another. I'm going to share this video on my Facebook page in the hope that some of my friends/family might wander over and enjoy your channel as much as I do and more importantly, can gain from some of your observations like those expressed in THIS particular video. Mom always taught me, growing up, if I didn't have anything good to say then to think twice (or in my case, three times 🤣) before saying anything at all. We live in, increasingly, a digital age where people spend far too much of their free time online rather than LIVING life in the real world. Yeah, maybe a little bit of judgment from me on that. haha. The point I want to make is there are far too many who are AGGRESSIVE online; keyboard warriors and digital bullies. We don't have to be family for the values you are talking about here to be applied. If more strangers actually started taking the time to understand one another, to talk and have an actual dialogue, then perhaps life around the world would start getting better. Keep Your Daydream, I totally understand not yelling at each other while backing in. For my grandparents and I, when we would go traveling my job was to put out our slides and help my papa with anything he needed help with. Man, you and Tricia are the cutest couple on UA-cam!!

our little family just got our first hard sided travel trailer and took our first trip this weekend. After binge watching about 50% of your videos I implemented some strategies and the biggest improvement was the use of radios!!! My wife and I have been towing boats for 12.5 years together and were always the ones yelling. The use of radios completely changed the atmosphere of backing up a trailer. My wife even commented on Sunday morning about the other RVs departing while yelling at each other trying to get reconnected.
OMG, two things saved our ability to go RV together and save our marriage, lol. A backup camper for the trailer and a set of walkie talkies. Once we had both, it changed everything!! We've also developed a routine for setting up and breaking down, which helps a lot!
The 5 Love Languages changed our family's life years ago and we share it with as many people as we can. My son even made the girl he had been dating over a year take the test when he started considering marriage. Everything about how they communicate changed for the better and the wedding is next December! Thanks for sharing that and the other book suggestions. If you can't talk at home, being in an RV for any length of time could get really ugly, really fast. :-)

We use the radios too, best thing ever! We're a family of 6 and everyone had one. When our kids go to the park, ride their bikes or take a walk; they have to carry one. Ours (mom & dad) also has weather alert and flashlight (great when you set up at 10PM). Our kids are young, so we didn't break the bank on theirs.
The hubby and I have set a goal: "Location Independent" by Fall 2018. Your UA-cam channel is an invaluable resource, so thanks so very much!! We are both enjoying the RV research and can't wait to get on the road in just a little over 12 months. When we go on family trips, my husband and I let my kids know that we need quiet time we say its time to play the quiet game and we give them the reasons why. t Each kid has their own plan of action and it has worked like a charm. THANK YOU for the video!!

As a yacht delivery captain and former corp. captain, we both love to travel. That said, when we pull into a camp site, we have defined roles. We do use walkies and after the trailer is in the proper spot, I take care of all the outside stuff, electrical, water, sewer and so on. My wife is inside, seeing what may have fallen, getting out the rug,chair and what have you. Once done........BEER TIME! The only time we has "issues" was after a 14 hour drive to Texas, pulled in late, stayed hooked up and crashed around 11 pm. The next day, both of us wiped out we got into for a few and then started cracking up, we were thrift storing it, and said to hell with and went back to the park. bbq steaks and maggies!!
Really enjoy the videos as fellows Arizonans from payson. Being where you are you may want to tour the bruchart gardens. Makes the Monterey beach flowers love walk look like a back yard garden. You will have to drag Trisha out. It's the whole six senses thing, not just what you see or smell, you can feel the beauty at the many little stop and rest benches. If Trisha is your flower in life it will be as a family reunion for her as well as torrid. Best wishes.
Trish has said this before, but good food is our main key of getting along! My trailer has no counter space so it can be difficult, but I'm learning what I can do in there and I cook more when we camp than I do at home, I'm looking forward to Trish's cook book! Also breathe right strips. Something about being in a trailer with someone who snores makes it echo, nobody will be in a good mood if they can't sleep through the night!

Wish we would've known about this about 5 yrs ago. We rented a class C and drove to Baton Rouge for my daughters graduation. Mom, dad, mother in law, wife, kid and 2 lil yip yip dogs for over 5000 miles was VERY trying on patience to say the least. Safe to say that a trip like that WILL NOT happen like that again. Separate vehicles probably would've been an easier option for sanity sake. The park where you guys are looks amazing.
I'm SOOOO planning to show this to my gang. We are working on how to have wonderful memories with our new-to-us RV. My son is so excited about all of the adventures we can take. He has loved watching your family and the fun you're having. Your son Caleb would be his very best bud. They're so much alike!

Good advise! Hubby & I tried to use our walkie talkies but he has this thing of saying more than needs to be said, I can't tell him to stop because he is about to hit something, if his finger is on the talk button. So we use our cell phones. That way I can tell him to "Shut Up! and Listen!" LOL
You guys are so cute. I love your take on everything when it comes to a "realistic " family unit. You mentioned in one of your videos that the holiday is not just the destination but the trip there. We have always done that as a family, the fun starts as soon as we lock the front door and get in the car, it's so important. Most of our holiday funny sayings and memories come from the road trip. About to go on our first rv trip ever on August 26 2020. Husband and 2 boys 7 and 8. I love watching you guys do this full time with your boys. Tori is great too but the boys remind me of mine

We are going to go on our FIRST RV trip. NC to Utah, leaving this Saturday. On our short trips, we "were", the people yelling just as you explained. I had walkies we used years ago, pulled them out, powered up and ready. Thanks for the great idea...

We have learned to use cell phones to communicate. The driver is on Bluetooth in the truck and the helper has her phone. This is extremely helpful when we arrive at our destination late at night.
When we travel in our RV,I like to have a bag prepared for each of our 3 daughters,from crossword puzzles, ,markers,notebook,favorite gum,healthy snack,for the twins that are teens,to new coloring book,colors,stickers,and blind bags 1-2 for each day out on the road for the 7 yr old,,and we have it where they can watch DVDs while traveling,so I will surprise them with a new movie to watch We also use walkie talkies,,it helps SO much for when backing into our site our at the gas station or restaurant ,, Our rule is that when we are leaving a place or backing up,everyone is to watch their sides for cars and remain quite,no music ,no nothing until we are safely in our space or on the road,,we learn this the hard way after my husband hit a water hose and it was spraying everywhere,it tore up the back of our trailer,,so now all of us have a job to help when we are backing up and parking I believe it's important that each of us does our jobs it makes it a pleasant trip for all of us,,we tend to get along better and enjoy spending time together more when we respect each other's space but also help out when chores are needing to be done,,after all it's all of our vacation,not just one of us,, Great tips,we really enjoy your life though vlogging,,,thanks
Been foollowing your advevntures off and on. Love the way your family is so together,, shows what great parents and roll models you both are. Your advise and common sense make your path work. You both are stellar examples of good honest people living life as it should be lived, its called by many names, but adventure, lifes journey and walkabout fit the bill. As always great video with great advice. A lot of what you talked about was spot on. As I was growing up rving was a jeep CJ5 with a 13' trailer camping in the mountains of Colorado. What great memories. If you can imagine we were a family of 5 plus a black lab in a jeep with camping gear. Talk about small spaces. Walkie talkies are one of the best tools for rvers. Being in the hardware business, I get a lot of rvers in all the time. It is fun giving them advice and hearing where they are from and what is working for them. And we get a lot of rvs because of glacier park. Keep up the great work. Always uplifting. God bless.

Being new to the channel, I can see how you can RV with 3 teenagers...parental wisdom and perspective! Your advice is spot on and "setting each other up for success" is the way to build great relationships with EVERY person in your life. My kids are 36 and 27 and we still are best friends because I got the same great advice when they were tiny. Great information! I have a list of rules for people who travel with me and there basic. I asked the people who travel with me to make a list of things they want to do on the trip and things they require when they travel. Most of the time I travel with the same people, but two years ago I and twenty seven of my friends went to Sturgis . One of my friends invited a new person none of us had ever met. This guy was told the time and place to bring his motorcycle to load in my stacker trailer. He was hour and a half lat then wanted to take all the bikes out so his bike would be in the front of the trailer because it bounces less, didn't happen! I don't allow smoking in my coach, he lit up on several times and I reminded him not to. Complained about everything. Once there we started dinner and each person were responsible for any special items they wanted, ( steak, fish, brink ) all other food and beverage we all pitched in and purchased. Grilling steaks the first night my brother counted the steaks and said we're one short, he didn't bring any! as a matter of fact we found out he didn't bring anything and didn't pitch in on the other items. Let me just say he didn't ride back home in my coach! It's amazing to me how one person can put a damper on a good time! I needed a physicist on that trip. keep the rubber on the road. Sorry for the rant!

Thanks great you tube, I love audible, I got it because my drive to work was about 35-40 min ea way. So I started listening to books in the car about 10 yrs ago.

I really identified with bringing the sarcasm home from work to the fam, so easy to do and not even think about it. One thing My wife and I found that works for backing is the cellphones instead of radios. If you have hands free in your vehicle it means the driver doesn't have to key a radio or try to hold a radio and back at the same time. And most of the time the batteries aren't dead either.
Always great resources from you guys. Your channel has helped us so much. If it's possible can you make a video on the overall truck/trailer/hitch setup and how you navigate through the steep grades of the mountains?

OMG, two things saved our ability to go RV together and save our marriage, lol. A backup camper for the trailer and a set of walkie talkies. Once we had both, it changed everything!! We've also developed a routine for setting up and breaking down, which helps a lot!

The 5 Love Languages changed our family's life years ago and we share it with as many people as we can. My son even made the girl he had been dating over a year take the test when he started considering marriage. Everything about how they communicate changed for the better and the wedding is next December! Thanks for sharing that and the other book suggestions. If you can't talk at home, being in an RV for any length of time could get really ugly, really fast. :-)

We use the radios too, best thing ever!
We're a family of 6 and everyone had one. When our kids go to the park, ride their bikes or take a walk; they have to carry one.
Ours (mom & dad) also has weather alert and flashlight (great when you set up at 10PM). Our kids are young, so we didn't break the bank on theirs.
The hubby and I have set a goal: "Location Independent" by Fall 2018. Your UA-cam channel is an invaluable resource, so thanks so very much!! We are both enjoying the RV research and can't wait to get on the road in just a little over 12 months.

As a yacht delivery captain and former corp. captain, we both love to travel. That said, when we pull into a camp site, we have defined roles. We do use walkies and after the trailer is in the proper spot, I take care of all the outside stuff, electrical, water, sewer and so on. My wife is inside, seeing what may have fallen, getting out the rug,chair and what have you. Once done........BEER TIME! The only time we has "issues" was after a 14 hour drive to Texas, pulled in late, stayed hooked up and crashed around 11 pm. The next day, both of us wiped out we got into for a few and then started cracking up, we were thrift storing it, and said to hell with and went back to the park. bbq steaks and maggies!!
Really enjoy the videos as fellows Arizonans from payson. Being where you are you may want to tour the bruchart gardens. Makes the Monterey beach flowers love walk look like a back yard garden. You will have to drag Trisha out. It's the whole six senses thing, not just what you see or smell, you can feel the beauty at the many little stop and rest benches. If Trisha is your flower in life it will be as a family reunion for her as well as torrid. Best wishes.

Trish has said this before, but good food is our main key of getting along! My trailer has no counter space so it can be difficult, but I'm learning what I can do in there and I cook more when we camp than I do at home, I'm looking forward to Trish's cook book! Also breathe right strips. Something about being in a trailer with someone who snores makes it echo, nobody will be in a good mood if they can't sleep through the night!

We use the term "sterile cockpit" during important moments in flight. Definitely going to do the same with our RV'ing!

Wish we would've known about this about 5 yrs ago. We rented a class C and drove to Baton Rouge for my daughters graduation. Mom, dad, mother in law, wife, kid and 2 lil yip yip dogs for over 5000 miles was VERY trying on patience to say the least. Safe to say that a trip like that WILL NOT happen like that again. Separate vehicles probably would've been an easier option for sanity sake. The park where you guys are looks amazing.
I'm SOOOO planning to show this to my gang. We are working on how to have wonderful memories with our new-to-us RV. My son is so excited about all of the adventures we can take. He has loved watching your family and the fun you're having. Your son Caleb would be his very best bud. They're so much alike!

Good advise! Hubby & I tried to use our walkie talkies but he has this thing of saying more than needs to be said, I can't tell him to stop because he is about to hit something, if his finger is on the talk button. So we use our cell phones. That way I can tell him to "Shut Up! and Listen!" LOL

You guys are so cute. I love your take on everything when it comes to a "realistic " family unit. You mentioned in one of your videos that the holiday is not just the destination but the trip there. We have always done that as a family, the fun starts as soon as we lock the front door and get in the car, it's so important. Most of our holiday funny sayings and memories come from the road trip.

Happens. We've been those people too! Enjoy the trip. I really wish I would have included not reacting on an RV to kids, spouses or other drivers. Just let it happen, think about it and then talk. Reminding myself that every day :)

We have learned to use cell phones to communicate. The driver is on Bluetooth in the truck and the helper has her phone. This is extremely helpful when we arrive at our destination late at night.
When we travel in our RV,I like to have a bag prepared for each of our 3 daughters,from crossword puzzles, ,markers,notebook,favorite gum,healthy snack,for the twins that are teens,to new coloring book,colors,stickers,and blind bags 1-2 for each day out on the road for the 7 yr old,,and we have it where they can watch DVDs while traveling,so I will surprise them with a new movie to watch
We also use walkie talkies,,it helps SO much for when backing into our site our at the gas station or restaurant ,,
Our rule is that when we are leaving a place or backing up,everyone is to watch their sides for cars and remain quite,no music ,no nothing until we are safely in our space or on the road,,we learn this the hard way after my husband hit a water hose and it was spraying everywhere,it tore up the back of our trailer,,so now all of us have a job to help when we are backing up and parking
I believe it's important that each of us does our jobs it makes it a pleasant trip for all of us,,we tend to get along better and enjoy spending time together more when we respect each other's space but also help out when chores are needing to be done,,after all it's all of our vacation,not just one of us,,

Been foollowing your advevntures off and on. Love the way your family is so together,, shows what great parents and roll models you both are. Your advise and common sense make your path work. You both are stellar examples of good honest people living life as it should be lived, its called by many names, but adventure, lifes journey and walkabout fit the bill. As always great video with great advice. A lot of what you talked about was spot on. As I was growing up rving was a jeep CJ5 with a 13' trailer camping in the mountains of Colorado. What great memories. If you can imagine we were a family of 5 plus a black lab in a jeep with camping gear. Talk about small spaces. Walkie talkies are one of the best tools for rvers. Being in the hardware business, I get a lot of rvers in all the time. It is fun giving them advice and hearing where they are from and what is working for them. And we get a lot of rvs because of glacier park. Keep up the great work. Always uplifting. God bless.
Hey guys my wife and I love your videos. We are going on our first RV trip next week to Vancouver island for two weeks. Full time RV might be in our future so trying this out will be good practice. Being new to the channel, I can see how you can RV with 3 teenagers...parental wisdom and perspective! Your advice is spot on and "setting each other up for success" is the way to build great relationships with EVERY person in your life. My kids are 36 and 27 and we still are best friends because I got the same great advice when they were tiny. Great information! I have a list of rules for people who travel with me and there basic. I asked the people who travel with me to make a list of things they want to do on the trip and things they require when they travel.
Most of the time I travel with the same people, but two years ago I and twenty seven of my friends went to Sturgis . One of my friends invited a new person none of us had ever met. This guy was told the time and place to bring his motorcycle to load in my stacker trailer. He was hour and a half lat then wanted to take all the bikes out so his bike would be in the front of the trailer because it bounces less, didn't happen!
I don't allow smoking in my coach, he lit up on several times and I reminded him not to. Complained about everything. Once there we started dinner and each person were responsible for any special items they wanted, ( steak, fish, brink ) all other food and beverage we all pitched in and purchased.
Grilling steaks the first night my brother counted the steaks and said we're one short, he didn't bring any! as a matter of fact we found out he didn't bring anything and didn't pitch in on the other items.
Let me just say he didn't ride back home in my coach!
It's amazing to me how one person can put a damper on a good time!
I needed a physicist on that trip.

Thanks great you tube, I love audible, I got it because my drive to work was about 35-40 min ea way. So I started listening to books in the car about 10 yrs ago.

I really identified with bringing the sarcasm home from work to the fam, so easy to do and not even think about it. One thing My wife and I found that works for backing is the cellphones instead of radios. If you have hands free in your vehicle it means the driver doesn't have to key a radio or try to hold a radio and back at the same time. And most of the time the batteries aren't dead either.
