You are, by far the best teacher I have ever come across anywhere, online or in person of any IT topic. Man you probably don't even realize how big a service you are doing to folks like us who scour through reams of documents and large contents on the internet just to get a grasp of these topics. THANK YOU!!!
Eli, I will always be indebted to you. Almost anytime that I have a system question, there you are with an Army styled point by point block of instruction on the subject. Thank you for all of the digestible, yet comprehensive content.
Eli, I have watched a few of your video classes. They are simply great and great and you really have done a superb job, man! I have benefited tremendously from each of your video. Please do keep posting more of those videos. Thank you so much for putting out a genuine work on UA-cam. Suresh, Ontario, Canada.
Almost 10 years and this course still one of the best courses out there on virtualisation. You give me the will to switch to IT everytime I watch your videos. Your way to teach things is amazing. You seek like a very nice guy
Eli, I've been working in the IT/communications field for over 20 years and I have to give you a really big "thumbs-up" on this video. I've learned all about VM's and all the animals it contains. You explain things very clearly, and in a very good pace. Kudos to you, keep up the great work!!
Huge Fan man,i remember having your "Introduction to networking video" that really got me more into starting my IT career! now I'm head of IT with knowledge in networking, Windows suit, Firewalls and getting into the cloud game and deploying OpenStack this month. Thanks a lot!
I truly enjoy Eli's lessons. He is great at explaining things in a simple way and he ties up information together beautifully, not to mention his indispensable repeat of vital information for the viewer to easily and quickly retain. His delivery is smooth and his manners are charming. Many thanks Eli!
the beautiful thing about eli is ---- bloody hell seems like he is reading my sleepy mind and he repeats and recap everything, which I pick up even if I have missed anything during his first intro ---- one of the best teacher I came across in my whole life
Thank You so much Eli Sir. I am a fresher undergoing training in Cloud Computing in Capgemini. I always watch your videos before my assessments because you explain every topic crystal clear. You indeed are the best teacher on UA-cam ! who follows the KISS principle..never bores.. and always helps me learn so much !
@KevinDR1987 Outside of a highly virtualized environment this is correct. This type of virtualization is built to work this way. The server instances are not shut down. It's the physical servers that get powered on and off. As an aside I understand what they are saying, but be careful of taking it too literally. You should maintain your systems to a degree that you are 99% sure the things will come back on if you do a reboot. Windows Server 2008 isn't NT...
Wonderful, thank you so much :0 Most presentations, even lectures in real life, have zero redundancy and just blast through the material at incomprehensible pace. With yours, it's like... listen to it, okay, got it in one, woah. I actually understand the concept instead of just learning to parrot the words to describe it.
Well done, E! This helps me in my new IP Telephony sales job. You don't overwhelm, yet you don't leave any meat on the bones. Your approach is balanced. Thank you, Sir, it's much appreciated.
Hey Eli, I have always said that a good instructor should be able to explain a concept 4 or 5 different ways or how many times it takes for the learner to understand. Your really know this topic. It's the best explanation I've seen on virtual machines. Thanks !
This is a great video to learn the very basics of virtualization. I've been looking for something like this for weeks, everything seems to skip over the basics. I can now say I actually understand what a hypervisor is, before it was just a word I've heard many many times. It's a shame you're not the VMware CBTnuggets guy, you would rock!
This was an awesome video! I now feel like I have a mental framework to better learn the specifics of the many virtualization tools. Also, you are a natural teacher, and I really appreciate your starting with the big picture-- IMO this is critical, but often overlooked in tech training. Thanks so much for posting this!
very good lessons for even a non-techie person. repeating of same things basically reinforce the idea/concept. excellent for introduction class. very clearly explained difference between cloud and virtualization. i will look for cloud class from him. great guy...thanks a lot.
Hey Eli , this is my first video of yours and i am going to continue with all he videos of yours. Thank you very much !! You have a great talent of injecting things into mind so clearly and easily, thank you very much man and a great thanks
Eli , God Bless you for being so patient throughout the session. You definitely understand the importance of repeating key points on the subject which help the beginners like me a lot. I have a good understanding about what virtualization is to begin with and continue my journey of learning. Thank you :)
Eli, Thank you so much for taking the time to really break this down for us. You are the true meaning of an EFFECTIVE teacher - use simple terminology that normal people can understand, and that is key to learning - and now because your method, I really have a better understanding .. GREAT JOB bro!!!
Hello Eli, in case you are still reading the comments on UA-cam.... I have a paper to write about virtualization, and so far, nothing is as clear as your videos to summarize all the information I am actually looking for. I will most definitely quote you in my paper, but if you have any suggestion for a book or another type of papers about the subject of virtualization, I would take it happily ! Most of the papers I found are very specialized, and the book I read about OS (and their chapter on virtualization) are most often only talking about the type 2 of hypervisor ! You made things so clear. Anyway, if you don't have time I still thank you a lot for your videos, you are a great story teller and that makes your explanations about computing beautifully accessible. Many thanks
This is the best IT video I have watched on youtube. If you can do tutorials in other aspects of IT like Business Intelligence, I won't hesitate to pay to get the tutorials. 58mins well invested
Fantastic teaching. Very down to earth and better than paying thousands to all these so-called Training Tech companies. Do you also have a donate button? Keep this alive and you are certainly impacting so many lives intellectually!
Hi Eli, I'm Chinese, my English isn't so good, but I can understand what you're saying in this wonderful video, which is very straight and clearly explaining. Thanks very much.
Amazing teaching skills with having practical problems in mind. To the point and repetitiveness makes one easily understand the concept.. Kudos.. Eli !
hi eli! u r doing a great service to the humanity at large man! keep it up :) yes indeed, many people especially it-youngsters & it-start-ups are truly benfitted by ur it-class-videos. plz ignore those people who give u negative/offensive comments/feedbacks but go ahead doing what u think is good 4 u & 4 all. i wish u all d best :)
Really enjoyed this. Clear explanations and clear enunciation. Well structured. The level of detail remained the same throughout. Working in IT Service operations I need to know a lot computing concepts
The example of old NT servers is very good, but also older hardware costs much more if you maintain a service agreement. However, I think the part about the electricity costing $100 a year underestimates a critical point. I think the power demand for server boxes (non-bade) is more like $200-400+ per year, and can vary not just on your per-watt-hour cost locally but the CPU usage (so who knows?). That does not take into account the cost of *cooling* a server room/data center- and that also varies dramatically based on scale. I had seen projects where $5m in hardware meant a $4m facility upgrade (power and cooling) and about $3m per year to run both power and cooling. So by year 2 the "environmental cost" ($10m) was twice the cost of the hardware, making TCO like $15m. So virtualization applied to that project today might make it $2m hardware, $2m facility, and $2m AC+HVAC for a total of $6m ops ($8m TCO). That is an oversimplification but you can easily see the impact to a companies total cost of ownership, which is why it's been a big buzzword for like 7-8 years now. :D
Amazing video, Eli! I learnt so much from this video about virtualization! (pour les francophones, sachez que je fais aussi des vidéos de vulgarisation informatique sur ma chaîne)
I have been in IT for 18 years as a sys admin and the most important aspect of anything new in IT are the concepts. Yes, I understood basically what Virtualization is. I know what a Lun is. I know what a data store is. But some things I did not know. And when all these experts did their best at going over hyper v or VMware basics, they were not communicating irtulization concepts but were only communicating features of the software. So the concepts that I didn't know interfered with my learning. Not one person I met at these conferences was adequate at communicating basics. People, if you don't understand the basics, forget it. Also, never let your ego persuade you on learning from the most rudimentary level. Its one thing that has helped me immensely. I am never ever afraid to be a 1st grader all over again and in fact, I embrace it. Its actually fun. Eli is like a 1st grade teacher that I needed to find before I could move on. Now I have a much better understanding at going through the VMware hands on labs because now I understand the vital concepts. I really look forward in finding some more videos that Eli shares.
mark kenter Professors, instructors are not your best friend. They're there to make money. If you ever challenge their intellect on different subjects, they'll be just as loss as you are, unless they're proficient in many subjects. You can always give them a poor rating if they are a a** hole professor/instructor.
Very well explained! Even though I knew some of the things that Eli covered about virtualization from reading VMware white papers, Eli helped me fully understand what I read in a very understandable and relatable way! Thanks!!!
Thank you so much. The information was very helpful. I was online yesterday looking for a good book to pruchase on virtualization. I decided to check out UA-cam and came across your videos. They have helped so much.
@Badboysvsgoodboys Supposedly if you buy the Server version of OSX you can do it... Their may be some hack to get the regular version to work but I don't know it. (One of the virtualization companies made a coding mistake last year that allowed you to create OS virtual machines, but they "patched" the "problem" and so you cant do it anymore...) I would go with VirtualBox if you're new to virtualization. It's free, stable, works on everything...
Thanks Eli your video classes have been helping me a lot just wish all my class mates were able to understand English in order to watch your classes. Right on brother keep up the great work.
Another benefit along with Server Consolidation is Resource Utilization..... With single dedicated desktop/server for one application you might not be fully utilizing the server's Compute (CPU, Memory etc) resources and when you virtualize the servers and OS and Apps in one single server you are sharing the resources thus fully utilizing the server's Compute power.
Great tutorial pitched for first-time viewers - good high level concepts, compelling reasons for using them, and background! Good deep insight with little jargon to lose the viewer!
Hello Eli, with your superb explanation, over all the networking concepts you uploaded quite a while ago gave me interest on networking and security......I had recently completed my B.tech in computer Science and i am from India . But, the thing is now I am confused for what i must pursue for networking carrier.....any suggestions are highly welcomed...such as what certifications or courses I must do in order to get on with my networking carrier....or should i go to other technology.......I have great trust in ur advise ...............Thank u Eli for ur gr8 illustrations....
Hey Eli, great vid! I was wondering, at about 24:00 in your video, you mentioned that in the event of a hardware failure, the instances can migrate over pretty much instantly. I have a couple of questions about that. 1. From VMware's website, I read that in the event of hardware failure, the containers can be moved to another server, but the container needs to be rebooted. (Obviously much less downtime than migrating an OS in a non-virtualized environment) 2. In order to take advantage of the migration service, you need a shared disk on the network correct? Unrelated to migration, what do you think the disadvantages of virtualization are? Lastly, I've tried reading about the difference between traditional on-prem services (i.e. cluster databases etc) vs private cloud. As far as I have been able to find, it seems that the only difference between the two is virtualization. Is there something I'm missing?
+Alvin T 1. "Restart virtual machines on other vSphere hosts in the cluster without manual intervention when a server outage is detected." www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/features/high-availability#sthash.Lolbohwg.dpuf 2. Yes you will need a NAS or a SAN with a very high speed NIC 3. It depends on what service you go with VMWare, Azure, AWS. That gets a bit complicated so honestly I'd have to do an hour of research just to make sure I'm giving you the proper information. You should be able to contact VMWare and ask them directly.
Best teacher on youtube! Not like these other guys that try to sound smart just to confuse people. Eli does it so we can truly understand thanks Eli

he spends a lot of time repeating himself, but i wouldnt say enough to downvote

After watching your video,I come to know how virtualization really works. Thank you for your teaching. Keep it up man.

Great job explaining the basics. Just started a job that requires knowledge of VM. Very easy to understand.
This is gold! Explained in a very clear and understandable manner. Best Video I've watched on virtulaization. Thank you very much.
Never seen a teacher like Eli. You are just amazing Sir.
I barely noticed this class was one hour..Hats off Sir. Thank you.
Eli's IT videos are really amazing! He's really good at explaining things!
Eli is the Man! He keeps it down to earth to the novice layer.
Nice Tutorial. Long Live Computer Guy to help all
