She can pass for Barts little sister
That’s what I was thinking lmfao
Wtf lol 😂
I think the 3 of us agreeing on this is enough to make it cannon. She is def Barts twin sister from now on.
Cantonese can be written. There is a formal way to write it (書面語, literally meaning "language on the page"), and there is a literal way of writing the oral Cantonese (口語, literally meaning "oral language"). Eg "do you know" can be written as 你知道嗎 (formal) and it can be written as 你知唔知 (oral). In school, Hong Kong kids learn both. Hong Kong cinema is still all in Cantonese!
Diu can totally be written 𨳒
@@egonsung except no one uses that one, it's usually 屌
@winston7762 however, fits in the 五門一傑being the 5 profanity.
Or the tamer version 鳥/鸟 which actually has 2 pronunciations
半文盲自創的大白字…以識得寥寥無幾的廣東發音漢字作為發音,再拼上指示字體,以表達字義。
She is too polite in her Canto Swear words and phrases. Need authentic Hong Konger to let you know the real dirt XD
But their English isn’t good enough to banter with these guys. A authentic Hong Konger would get eaten alive by Joe and Bart alone lol… it takes a while for Hong Kong people to compute sarcasm and banter cause they don’t teach that in their basic English classes. This girl did a pretty good job carrying the canto banner. Probably the best you’re gonna get cause you need someone that understands Asian-American humour, AND speaks canto fluently.
@@marvinsulzer8258 there is so many Canadian or American born HK people that are more savage, like her response for a creep hitting on her.. Jaow Hoi, like go away… Me: Diu Hoi ( Fuck off) like she’s too polite, and like Diu Hoi is normal for HK people. Don’t think she mention Diu lay lo mo, chow hai, poke guy ham gah chaan. Straight Canto Combo, (fuck your mother, stinky puss, trip on the street and your family dies) like.. basic stuff LOOL canto swearing is fun and combo’d often. She’s too polite
Dllmch
@@marvinsulzer8258 if they can invite jimmy auyeung, he can do it.
their hardcore version is quite light....hahaha...should have the "tiu nia ma" hahahahaha..especially everything involve mother and father and entire family...hahahaha
😂 she's one of my top favorite guests. Thanks for having her!
She's basically us
^ Haha like me saying my only brother is my favorite brother :3
Please hire her instead of Kalyne!
@@rjn1195 No. Kalyne is an official Careful Boyz crew member and many of us really like her. Roxanne has her life in Australia and is a nice guest.
The problem is Bart's Mandarin is literally 2nd grade level so his insult and vocabulary stays there. Excuse me is not 對不起, it is不好意思。
The same applies to her Canto...very elementary and Westernized...
They are literally like foreigners learning Chinese.
It's so bad and the fact that he thinks Mando is soft is hilarious. The roughest spots in China are in the northern provinces and the language is hard af
Roxanne straight up violated “…what happened to you?”😂😂😂
as a Hongkonger, i cant agree with you guys on the view of cantonese, i feels like you guys are understanding cantonese in a very basic ABC way,
you can actually write in cantonese, maybe you have not seen it before, but its been use even in newspaper, and cantonese actually goes way back , it has more history then Mandarin, i understand where/how you guys are viewing cantonese, because its not being seen as much in the US, but i will be nice if you guys can have a FOB cantonese on the show and chat with that perosn
Because we are ABC 😂
@Fcukengee so you are a bogan?
They are ABC... Lol
Diu is 屌 btw
這視頻裡的女生家裡應該是廣東人或者香港人移民過去的吧,她居然不知道粵語的口語字,我一個北方人都比她懂.......There are certainly some characters that are used exclusively for writing Cantonese. I'm from Xi'an but I've learnt how to read them by watching movies and reading comments online. 我係西安人都知廣東話嘅口語字點寫,呢條女屋企人係廣東人仲唔知廣東話有口語字,幾奇怪。
Bart with his second grader insults in Mandarin hahaha
In HK Canto, they don't say "Sor Gwa" (silly melon). they say "Sor Hai" (silly c unt).
in hong kong parents normally call their kids silly melon when they do stupid things
Or bok qi for crazy
黐鳩線
An educational episode. A way to learn a language is to start off learning insults. 😆
The Shaolin Soccer translation is: the first 4 words is the name of their team, and the equivalent translation of the following 6 words are “a team not to be overlooked.” Then the second girl the equivalent is, “if you want to get to the championships you must get past us first” so the full dialogue is “Team A is a team not to be overlooked.” “If you want to get to the championship, you must get past us first.”
It’s almost like a dialogue straight out of a Pokémon gym battle.
is the team name untranslatable ?
You’re spot on!!!!!!!! Roxanne is such a fake hk canto rep
@Justjaycee88 she's not claiming to be one
@@jay1jayfnot really, the literal translation is “Meaty Face Double Team Dragon” I have no clue if it might refer to a different show, movie or video game which a lot of Hong Kong movies and TV shows usually do. Or maybe it’s just a gag name because although the literal meaning is what I mentioned above the double team phrase they used also has a rated R meaning
@@Justjaycee88thank you! But like Roxanne I’m a Cantonese speaking person that grew up abroad and our understandings of Cantonese and Chinese culture is whatever our parents taught us and what we’re exposed to in our environment. I’m actually not Hong Konger myself, both my parents are from a small town in the suburbs of Guangzhou/Foshan area. I’m only able to understand and speak Cantonese fluently because I spent much of my childhood with cousins in China (Guangzhou area) and almost exclusively watched TVB growing up and still watch TVB now. I only commented what I think is the correct translation to share with the JK Crew or anyone else curious what is actually being said.
Too bad she lives in Australia..she fits in perfectly!🥲
Joe felt left out this episode, no Japanese love this episode 😂😂
As a person who speak both canto and mando, i dont think they know much ab cantonese and mandarin tho....
That's true. They have no clue. Like kindergarteners discussing calculus.
Cantonese is older than Mandarin
Much older with a long history, is the real OG , people spoke and use it first in ancient times
Yes and no. Old Mandarin was spoken around the Mid and Lower Yangtze around the same time as the Yue languages including Cantonese. While current cantonese is more conservative than modern Mandarin, their differences are not that drastic.
Cantonese has a history of more than 2000 years so it’s older than Mandarin
@@hingzai6689 In what sense?
As a Cantonese speaker I feel like our mannerisms have more in common with Vietnamese than with Mandarin speakers.
Look up the nation of "Nanyue"
That's because Cantonese and vietnamese share the same ancestors called Nanyue or Southern Yue, a branch of Baiyue, or a hundred Yue.
There are some of few words very similar between Cantonese and Vietnamese and is way more different than Mandarin. These words in Vietnamese we call it “Hán-Việt” it’s mean Sino-Vietnamese words are Vietnamese words and elements derived from Chinese and Vietnamese words created by Vietnamese speakers by combining Vietnamese words and/or elements of Chinese origin together. Sino-Vietnamese words are a large part of the Vietnamese language, play an important role and cannot be separated or deleted from the Vietnamese language.
In case Ryan is still wondering what the girls said in the movie
the line:我哋玉面雙飛龍並唔系話浪得虛名嘅
the hard part is 玉面雙飛龍, which is the nickname of those two
roughly means good looking dragons
they are saying that they earn that reputation(a cool nickname/title)
if they want to go to finals, need to go through them first
hope you understand what it means now
sorry for my bad English
The only one in the comments who got it right
浪得虛名 means the name or reputation means nothing SO they are saying our title … is not only a name with no meaning
or flying dragon beauties, jade face normally means beautiful face
OHHHHHHH
@@ryanimay 玉面雙飛龍
玉 - jade.
面 - face.
雙 - pair of (as in 2 thing, a pair of things)
飛 - fly
龍 - dragon.
玉面 - jade-face should be translated as Regal because jade is associated with royalty and face is expressing the meaning of looking like jade.
雙飛龍 - paired flying dragons could be translated as soaring dragon duo.
So 玉面雙飛龍 could be translated as
Regal soaring dragon duo.
浪得虛名 is a Chinese idiom
浪 - waves (as in waves of the sea)
得 - get, obtain
虛 - fake (opposite of genuine)
名 - name (but better translation would be reputation).
So it means, "Waves get fake reputation". The reason for this idiom is to tell people not to be too afraid of the waves. It may look big, but inherently, it does not have any genuine power.
9:10 "Diu" in Cantonese is written as "屌" or "𨳒" as in "屌你老母"
Of course it can be written in Chinese characters.
i love how fascinated ryan was 😄
Mandarin: Mandarin, or Standard Chinese, is based primarily on the Beijing dialect and other northern dialects. It became the official language of China after the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) moved the capital to Beijing. Over time, Mandarin was promoted as the lingua franca across China, especially after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, which led to its widespread adoption as the official language.
Cantonese: Cantonese, on the other hand, is one of the oldest Chinese dialects and has its roots in the Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. It has evolved from Middle Chinese, the language spoken during the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties (from about the 6th to 13th century). Cantonese has preserved more features of Middle Chinese than Mandarin, including certain phonetic elements and tones.
Geographic and Cultural Influence:
Mandarin: As the official language of China, Mandarin is the most spoken dialect and serves as the primary language of government, education, and media. Its influence expanded significantly during the 20th century as the Chinese government implemented policies to standardize and promote it across the country.
Cantonese: While not as widely spoken as Mandarin, Cantonese remains a key cultural and linguistic element in Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and Macau. It also holds a significant presence overseas due to historical emigration from southern China.
Linguistic Features:
Mandarin has fewer tones (four main tones and a neutral tone) and tends to have simpler syllable structures.
Cantonese retains more tones (six to nine, depending on the analysis) and has a richer inventory of sounds, making it phonetically closer to ancient Chinese forms.
Historical Preservation:
Cantonese has been less influenced by political changes and reforms compared to Mandarin. As a result, it has preserved many elements of older Chinese that have been lost in Mandarin due to language simplification and standardization efforts.
Overall, while Mandarin has become the dominant dialect in China, Cantonese holds an important place as a carrier of historical and cultural identity, particularly in southern China and among the Chinese diaspora.
lol her Cantonese isn’t good
shes plastic thats why
FOR REAL lmfaooooo
YES IT IS!!!
I don’t even speak Cantonese🤣🤣
@@BJJ_Biker then yours is also bad 😂
Cantonese is bad ass when it comes to speaking Ghetto insulting.
Bart should had done Taiwanese insults. 😅😂
The first girl in Shao Lin Soccer basically says "we flying Double Dragons (team name) aren't no scrubs."
The second girl says "If you want to get to the finals you'll have to go through us"
That’s the subtitles I saw before too but they’re apparently wrong..?
@@ryanimay they're correct in meaning but not accurate in literal translation
We need lots more of these! Makes me legit wanna learn mandarin/cantonese
She’s cool, but her Cantonese is not that good. Cantonese can be written out, it is a writable language.
The Hong Kong Cantonese rap duo that she talked about was 農夫 or FAMA. The name literally means farmer. Their lyrics are local and funny that only Cantonese speakers can fully get it
Ancient chinese actually sounds phonetically more like cantonese. Mandarin is relatively new. It was made the official chinese spoken language to try to unite the Chinese people.
Middle Chinese you mean... Ancient/Old Chinese is more closely related to Hokkien
gotta be more clear on what you mean by 'ancient'. The Min languages particularly Souther Min languages have much more archaic way of speaking.
I think it’s more closer to hakka?
This episode was equal parts informative, entertaining and hilarious!
I would love to see more shows like this on JKN! keep it up yall!
Ayyyyy this video was awesome! We need more Canto representation on JkNews!
4:43
I say it like that every other day, at least once every 7 hours lol . It’s because I think it’s hilarious to try to be vulgar and polite at the same time.
Great episode!
粵語FOREVER! ✊
Jackson is from HK too~ love when he speaks Canto!
Yes more Roxanne!
扑街 is derived from English “poor guy”. It is now a cursing word similar to “ass hole” or “go to hell” in Cantonese. Yes, you can write “diu” in character. Lol😂
Haha the du ma of cantonese .
Im puerto rican ,but grew up with the viet homies on the south side of Houston and still use that till this day
17:15 that rap group is called FAMA. And I guess they forgot MC Jin. lol.
their cantonese name literally translates as farmer
農夫/农夫 if anybody needs the Chinese characters for whatever purpose
The SGV used to be very Cantonese heavy because of the Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants. At some point, 2/3rd of the businesses in Chinatown were Chinese-Vietnamese owned. Now that more of those immigrants are hitting retirement age, it makes economic sense for them to sell their business to a Mainlander who has the money to buy them out
that line ryan wants translated is Jade Faced Double Dragon (which is their nickname)
Love her whole vibe✨
The written language is not mandarin nor Cantonese. It’s like the alphabets for most Chinese languages. Different Chinese they use the same characters in different way. The way Taiwanese use the Chinese characters are different from China even though they both speak Mandarin.
No it's the same. Different vocabularies perhaps. It's like British English and American English. It's both English still.
13:34 pockets of China? There is literally an entire province named Canto aka Guangdong in China. Hong Kong was original part of Guangdong thats why Canto is the main dialect. Very few people speak Canto in Taiwan, usually only people that does business with HK or Guangdong speaks Canto.
I've got the golden harvest opening song stuck in my head now 😂
Roxanne 😮💨❤️
15:40 the most prevalent chinese group in Singapore is Hokkien, therefore Hokkienese was the lingua franca among the Chinese population there till 1980s. Since 1980s because the government have pushed Mandarin as the primary language after English, now Mandarin is the lingua franca for Chinese speakers.
The clip ryan showed around 13:50 about the 2 girls talking in shaolin soccer, the first girl was stating kind of her nickname and something along the line of "everyone knows me and my specialty "
why I only find this channel now.😅 just 1st minute I die laughing. come on guys let's go 痴線😂
The Shaolin soccer line, the girls are saying,
We are 玉面双飞龙 and we aren't 浪得虚名. If you want to enter the finals, you have to get through us.
玉面双飞龙 is their team name. It literally means jade faced paired flying dragon.
浪得虚名 is a well known Chinese idiom which means inauthentic, to have an undeserved reputation.
"Mandarin is written in simplified" Taiwanese people would like a word 🤨
these people have lower understanding of Chinese than a second grader in Taiwan, China, and HK
Ryan is a shaolin soccer connoisseur
Lol one of my favs 😂
cantonese can be written in vernacular cantonese (look like mandarin but it’s cantonese), a lot of colloquial words can be written also, diu is 屌 for example.
We also say "pretty girl/guy" when flirting
Cantonese (and other Chinese languages) are much older than Mandarin, but Mandarin was chosen as the national language so it's now the one most used and taught.
You can definitely write Cantonese.
Everything in HK (and Macau, actually) is still in Cantonese, just many people can speak Mandarin as well.
My dad’s favorite phrase….. Sei Jai Bow!
This is awesome! Canto vs Mando lol😂
I like her! More Roxanne!
What if yall did a JKN Guest All Star episode? Roxanne, Jesus, Johnny Chang, Jason Cheny, the Military guys, etc...
You can't forget about David So, also.
dont forget about doc Mike and Jared
@@kshinokevin David So would have to lead that segment. But Jason Chenny will probably bug David the whole time lol
@@kvang254 David loves Jason Cheny. He had him on the last two episodes of his Genius Brain podcast. And he has been on David's podcast before that as well.
@@bethnichols2875 I know he does, but they banter alot lol. In a funny way of course. They've got great chemistry
Barts French hahaha I'm dead
I absolutely LOVE HER!
obviously these people don’t know much about cantonese.. Hker here and cantonese can definitely be written.. thats how we write scripts for movies n shows n everything in Hong Kong🤪 its just that we use formal writing(written chinese in hk style) and cantonese in different context, ie the lyrics in a cantonese song normally uses the formal written form, but they're all pronounced in cantonese, so in a way its still considered cantonese
13:30
莫文蔚:我哋玉面雙飛龍並唔系話浪得虛名嘅! (We the Jade-Faced Double flying Dragons aren't one's to not live up to our reputations)
張柏芝:想入決賽?問過我哋先! (You want to get into the finals? Gotta ask me first!)
14:28 😂 love ya Ryan
Omg i always wondered wtf those shaolin soccer gurls were saying too! Even saw all versions and languages! Thx Ryan!
In the hmong language you can said Face in hmong and people will get mad at you. It so funny 😂
hey, where can i watch shaolin soccer? i checked prime but it's not available in my area.
Roxy should try kinjabang noodles
Im eating some right now 😊
One of the best guest !!! Must have her back !!!
Canto can be written actually. The only reason we don’t is because school don’t letting us do so.
Thieu, Deal, Deww, Dueeew, Duel or however you spell it, is a mainstay in the cardrooms. First word I learned there.
I know he is idolized in America but hk-canto folks know Jackie Chan is like HK’s Weinstein. In addition to many TVB actors.
Haha like in Kung fu hustle ,when they say.. I cant understand your Chinese
She forgot "laan si gat lou" for "go to hell" when someone bothers you. It means roughly "throw your corpse down the road".
lol I am loving these episodes with Roxanne as the guest. She is so cool.
fun fact: cantonese and all the dialects in guangdong are older than mandarin. wiki is the source
i have a relative who's gen z (maybe younger?) and she doesn't speak cantonese nor taishanese/toisanwa because she can only speak mandarin in school. i went to a school that taught both mandarin and cantonese (i trialed the canto class in summer school, was not for me lol).
Yeah makes sense since ancient Chinese was closer to Cantonese.
@@Krenisphia What do you mean ancient? Tang Dynasty Ancient or Han Dynasty Ancient? If later very much no, if former somewhat no.
Would you quote that because it doesn't say that on my end. Also it is not clear because they both descended directly from Middle Chinese
Diuuuuuuuuuuu lol😂
Normally, i tune Bart out in episodes like this. He is not very knowledgeable on chinese culture... Cantonese is way older than Mandarin as a language. Also most cantonese words have a written form in traditional chinese. Even the diu Bart mentioned. But the ep is still entertaining nonetheless
8:24 Mandarin is NOT older than Cantonese.
Cantonese cursing depends on the tone and volume as well. You can’t tell someone to pook gai without yelling it and looking serious. Or we just think you’re joking.
Fun thing is, you can sound and look like your insulting someone even if you call them any random thing. Any food item that sound badass when you.. rev it up hahaha 😂
Yall should check out infernal affairs 1 and 2. If you like gangster/police movies one of the dopest 2 movies with legends like tony cheung, andy lao and eric tsang. It was the original version of the departed but 10x better😅
The Cantonese rap duo mentioned by Roxanne is called "Fama" (a play on the word "Farmer", which is their actually Cantonese name)
玉面雙飛龍-yuk mein surn Fai long roughly means (dragon face duo)
She was just basically saying their nickname and the saying you have to get through us, in the Shaolin soccer paet
Cantonese has so much slang
Shaolin Soccer!!
Cantonese is a very flamboyant sounding language, Mandarin is more harsh... insulting in Mandarin sounds more harsh
it's a lot more sing-song too. there are more nuances to cantonese than mandarin. hanyu pinyin only has 4 'nuances' but i think there are 6 or more in cantonese
Hell yeah! Canto ftw!
Mandarin in Taiwan is soft, but in CHINA, you bet.
They use Taiwanese in Taiwan to curse. It's not soft.
I thought barts pants were actually skin. Thought he was naked
The man forgot Hokkien in Singapore.
8:30 You can totally write in Cantonese.
Sagwa? Was that the name of that cat from PBS?
Golden Harvest film studios = Raymond Chow (producer); the Bruce Lee movies
9:13 There IS a word for diu!
I thought that she was from England, but Roxanne was an Aussie, mate.
also, longfu literally translates to farmers
You guys forgot the infamous canto saying “hit your lungs”
The two national languages for Singapore are English and Mandarin. The Chinese written language is "universal", though there are some only cantonese words. If you remember the movie Hero with Jet Li, if i reember correctly, that's part of the movie. The Qin emperor unifies china under one rule inclulding one written language.
im gonna go rematch Shaolin soccer
I hope im the next fan guest.
I say some crazy shit
