Yes. It has a good slicing blade and a strong holding handle. Its bevel geometry has little wood destroying power and it will be no good for deep carving or batoning. But as a light woods knife I think it will serve you very well. Hollow grind never makes a woods knife. Full flat grind has possibility when it has a good handle. Scandi or Convex grind almost always makes a good woods knife. But the Mark1 knife has a military coolness factor which regular bushcraft knives don't have. Thanks.
its design is from a time when batoning wood with your knife wasnt a thing, as i say about knives "a knife should do nothing more than what it should, and what it should do is cut"
I bought a K Bar several months ago. The factory edge was very dull. I sharpened it with the Lansky system using the three diamond stones provided. I then stropped it using the green compound from Lee Valley. It is now much better. Your channel is very informative, keep up the good work.
Another classic design that just keeps winning fans. I have an old one that was left to me by my brother. I have not handled it in a while, I am going to take another look at it. Thanks for this very interesting video. Have a good New Year and many more hunts in your future.
I like the mods you did on the small Kabar. You addressed the issues I have with mine, I think I will modify mine likewise. Thanks for the video! Best regards, MiF
I have the first Ka-Bar you show in this video, and it has become one of my favorite knives. Ka-Bar uses excellent 1095, as good as it gets, I think. I do need to rework the grind on my knife, but it still pleases me. I had a full-size commemorative Ka-Bar with a seven and a half inch blade, but someone broke into my son's car and took it, plus a lot of other gear. I've been looking to replace it, but that exact model is no longer available, so I've been looking at other Ka-Bars, including the one you have in this video with a flat grind. I think you've convinced me to try it. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the great review, Wako. I'm going to order one right now, and I'll look forward to doing the modifications to it that you did. It's good to see that your injury healed well. After seeing the video of it happen, I bought a pair of kevlar gloves.
If you are saying about a knife like Swill Army knife with flat metal scales, I have a similar one from Camillus USA. It's old fashioned and stunning. Thanks.
Hi, I just got a shipment from DLT trading containing a strop & compound. I have been shopping for a knife to replace my Becker 17 for EDC and work belt. The Becker's saber grind has proved to be too thick for chores around the house. I have placed a convex edge on it using sandpaper. It is very sharp so I moved it to my home security belt. During all of July I have been shopping for a replacement work knife. There are so many to choose from. Now is the turn of the Ka Bar Mark 1 Navy to be looked at. As you demonstrated it will take a fine convex edge with no problem. This ka Bar is now a runner up on the short list to replace the Becker 17. One of five knives under consideration. Maybe I will buy all five because it is difficult to choose. Cheers.
I think the black rubberized grip version with the kydex style sheath makes an excellent camp knife. But their leather handles and sheaths are very good and have a really cool classic feel, their sheaths work in over time and only get better. I just recently became a fan of the full flat grind, especially with a convex edge. The Ontario Blackbird SK5 is also an excellent knife, I think you would really like it, the handle is actually very comfortable and the knife has a really awesome design .
as soon as I seen and hold this knife in my hand I loved it. And it came close to rasor adge I presume do to its edge geometrie. I like in deept review so good job.
Recommend you to apply some leather finish, or leather conditioner or other special leather cream (neutral) than handle will have longer life and it will be more beautiful! The same with the sheath! I love Kabar and other military knives, they are knives for life, if you are a good user you even can give it to your sons and your sons will gie it to your grandsons. I have only ontario knife and some 7" ontario blades so I'm gonna make my own knives. Thank you for review!
Best cheap easy to find anywhere reliable qa sameness all round shtf blade - get one wherever you go, touch it up, mark base of pommel for compass use .. and leave it with a local when you leave!
Yes, I do. The thick handle of the Mark 1 is suited for powerful holding and its flat ground blade is suited for slicing. But you might feel its handle a little short, though I think it is acceptable. Thanks.
@jambiyaSlaughter He doesn't care where they come from. He judges knives for what they are, and not by who made them. I am American, and I love Japanese cars and motorcycles. I have five of them, so I guess I'm the same way.
Not what they marines carried. You modifications made it a lot more practical as a tool. The USN knife is a much better choice as a woodsman's knife than the USM full size knife which is a better choice as a military knife.

Your demonstration was very helpful. Thank you.
i really like that modified short kabar hopefully your new one works just as well for you.
I love these videos, your BK2 convex vid was my first modification to a knife. I fell in love with it.
Thank you for your vids
I really like the regrind you did on that k-bar. Great video.

Thank you for the great video! i ordered this knife and will be doing the same edge as you show here. THANKS!
Just a single wash with kitchen soap and sponge will remove the shiny coating on the leather washer soon. Thanks.

Cool knife, I have the same one (USN Mark 1) except it is the synthetic handle version with the kydex sheath.
The narrow Scandi sounds very good! I will like it definitely. Thanks.

Hai!
We love your movies. Thank you.!

Steven Parsons here we are three years later... What did you get?
That was an awesome video. Very Informative. Thanks.
I agree that if the handle were a bit longer and thinner, it would be a fantastic knife! I love the blade geometry! I have one myself
Great video. Extremely helpful.

Airik1111 you have good taste in knives
I have the kraton version and love it. I just used it to carve a small spatula.
as soon as I seen and hold this knife in my hand I loved it. And it came close to rasor adge I presume do to its edge geometrie. I like in deept review so good job.
Great details on the video. Thank you for sharing.
another great vid. Happy new year Wako Sensei!

yourn vids are very fun to watch--keep up the good work!
You need neatsfoot oil to protect the leather!
Thank you for the comparison.
I didn't know where you you were going with the sand paper, but if it works, it works.
Reminds me of the end of the Christmas story? " Jinger berrs, Jinger berrs Jinger arr the way"!
i'm going to have to get one of these.
I just like all his Review :)
Thanks for the review! How did you remove the handle coating?
Maybe you can grind down the sides of that ridiculously large pommel? Might be more effort than it's worth, though.
its double because the handle is bigger so that the sheath wont bend and more durable
Do you use only rubbing compound and a strop to make the convex edge? What grit whetstones do you use?
Did you happen to lose one of your fingernails? That looks painful! Ouch!
Good comparison on those knives. Both are really nice.
I carry one for edc. Mine shaves hair and wood like crazy
Your English is good considering that it is obviously not you first language
Do you have a knife with the birch bark handle?
Do you feel that the Mark 1 is a all around better knife than the USMC short?
Yes, I do. The thick handle of the Mark 1 is suited for powerful holding and its flat ground blade is suited for slicing. But you might feel its handle a little short, though I think it is acceptable. Thanks.
HAVE U USED THE BRITISH ARMY KNIFE
Do you think that this knife is good for skinning?
I don't think so. Its blade is a little too long and its handle is way too thick.
Takes some getting used too. I once skinned 25 deer in one day with this knife. I worked for a game processor in east texas for abit

what do you think of 1095 crovan
+real metis I know that is definitely a better steel than ESEE's 1095. The Crovan holds for a whole deer dressing. Thanks.
@TheSchnozwanger Ha ha, never mind I just watched the rest of the video.
Arigato gozaimasu
You had better soak that leather in mink oil or something or it is subject to rotting.
Not what they marines carried. You modifications made it a lot more practical as a tool. The USN knife is a much better choice as a woodsman's knife than the USM full size knife which is a better choice as a military knife.
