Robert M. Solow is Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1987, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in recognition of his contributions to the theory of economic growth; in 1999 he received the National Medal of Science for his creation of the modern framework for analyzing the effects of investment and technological progress on economic growth. His publications include Capital Theory and the Rate of Return (1963); The Nature and Sources of Unemployment in the United States (1964); Growth Theory (1970); and Inflation, Unemployment and Monetary Policy (with John B. Taylor, 1998). He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1956.
