I don't know if it was the special significance of this concert that was the reason, but a camera team of 10 made for a magnificent television production, and the end shot of the camera rising up to the roof in the concluding pages took my breath away. The performance itself was wondrous. Thank you for posting.
This is my Desert Island Ninth, Haitink and orchestra in top form.....pity state-of-the-tech sound wasn't in existence when this made, nonetheless a superb performance!
A very pointed moment of theatre at the end when he lets go of his baton - a symbol of him ceding control of the orchestra and also a way of breaking the spell. All the more telling a gesture considering Haitink was never known as a showman
Not really sure Mahler's 9th would be my Christmas day listen, but then again it would be higher in the pecking order than the 6th! I'd leave that for New Year... 🤣
1:33:58 dropping the baton...Alas~~ This is my best Mahler 9~~The chemistry between the maestro and the orchestra was a MAGIC~~!

A superb performance!)
Mahler par Haitink: le plus haut niveau. Seuls Tennstedt et Abbado s'approchent de ce sommet ...

I've always felt that the true moment that concludes the symphony is reached by some unspoken consent among the musicians
I haven't heard anything that looks into the abyss like this (c.16.38) Haitink captures it perfectly.

Is Jaap van Zweden the concertmaster in this performance?
Yes, he is
1:33:56
Golden Owl?
Sir, apparently, you've translated my name in a literal way. A person's name "shoemaker" doesn't indicate his or her occupation, isn't it? :)
I didn't understand your message: 1:33:56, in my opinion the duration of the record was 1:37:46
I am making a reference to the moment where Haitink dropped his stick as the sign of ending the performance.
Oh, and what is the importance of that fact?
