So am I right in assuming Aegon the Conquerer and Thorren Stark discussed Aegon's dream and the return of the Long Night when they treated at the Night's Watch? After which Stark knew for certain the Long Night was coming and reinforced the Night's Watch best he could with his offerings on the onset of winter. Aegon's dram would explain why he bent the knee given Jacerys said he'd probably sooner die unless it meant unity.

The cinematography and those large establishing shots really reminded me of early GoT, but even better. It’s nice seeing locations like the North and the Wall shown again almost through new eyes, like it’s the first time. I really enjoyed the opening scene. And seeing smaller things with the Dragons is always awesome, like Meleyes returning to Dragonstone,Syrax searching the coast with Rheanerya, and the rushed landing to reach Arrax’s wing. Love that stuff. I know it’s expensive but it makes the Dragons feel more real and less like a special effect only saved for battles or “epic” moments…I really hoped we’d see more of Jace in the north tho. I don’t know if that’s all there was but I don’t see them flashing back to it in other episodes, which kinda sucks.
And as always Ramin Djawadi is a blessing to this world and it’s stories.
I just hope the audience remembers that these characters are flying by the whims of their emotions, and their reactions to certain individuals, who have a constant need to prove themselves and make chaos in their wake. This isn’t GOT, this story really is about revenge and the horrible things that occur between super powers at war. There is no crumb of a happy ending for anyone we see in screen. So it could get very depressing. With no “Jon rides off into the woods” or “Arya sets sail” final note to end on. It really is fire and blood.

Still pretty conflicted about Alicent and Criston as well as how Blood and Cheese was done but other than that... a good first episode. Great being back in Westeros. Bring on episode 2.

I think for the show, it makes sense. Helaena doesnt want to be queen, she doesnt want this conflict, and she doesnt want her child on the Iron Throne. Picking the girl means that Aegon will "lose his heir" because how can he put a female on the throne after stealing Rhaenerya's?
If one of her children was fated to die, let it be the child who she believes was doomed to become a king, to suffer the same way as her father and husband/brother. Maybe the little princess can fly under the radar and be left in peace.
Her having a second son aftet losing her first... That worries me... I think something dark is coming for Helaena.

It was confusing at first, I kept waiting for her to be told about it, only to realize that the episode began with her already having known about it. They fucked up the cheese and blood scene. They should have kept it like it the books where the orders were to kill one of the two sons of Helena and Aegon. They snuck into Alicent's room where they gagged and bounded her while waiting for Helena (who they knew would bring in her kids to say good night to their grandma). Then they made Helena choose which one of the boys to kill. She pleaded for them to kill her instead, but they refused and even threatened to rape her daughter if she took too long to decide. She then chose her youngest son (who seems to have been cut from the show) to die, only for them to kill the older boy who was Aegon's heir instead.
I think that scene would have been way better if they followed the book.

@@kendallhurley8596 Yep! I’m also interested in seeing how Rhaenyra and Daemons relationship is affected here, as in her grief she orders for the death of Aemond and his actions lead to the beheading of Aegon’s heir. Something I think Rhaenyra will be furious about because of being a mother herself with a young kid and especially how something so horrific done to a child will affect her reputation, right as the war is heading to its first confrontation.
I gotta say it’s just such a breath of fresh air returning to this and getting so much political manoeuvring and character conflicts right off the bat. So many shows fixate on the spectacle and provocative scenes, it’s great that HOTD shows that narrative comes first and hopefully it stays that way and doesn’t lose its nature of being a political thriller first and foremost like what happened with GOT.

@@jo0rd73 to each their own. I just feel like it's down playing the black's (specifically Daemon's) wrong doings. They tries to make it look like Aemond was the target and this was all a mistake on blood and cheese's part when in reality Helena's sons had been the targets from the beginning in the books. It also took away from Helena's character in my opinion as it made it look like she barely fought for her children's lives. Not once did she offer her own life like she did in the book, she only offered a necklace. Considering this is the event that drives her to madness in the books, I feel like the show didn't do it justice.

Wrong move , the killers could kill them all.
And i thought it's mercy for her son because i think she never wanted her son to be the furure king. Look at her king husband, Aegon . She thought she never wanted her son to be like his dad. So to end this possible life misery in the future of her son, she chooses to end it now.

It was never going to have the same impact as the Red Wedding. Reason being is we haven’t invested years and multiple seasons and books into Helaena and her children as a characters. We don’t even know her children. It’s the same in the books. It’s a sick scene, but that’s all it is. We aren’t rooting for Helaena to live, we aren’t rooting for her to be reconnected with lost children or siblings, we aren’t rooting for her to avenge her father and take the throne.

Yeah, I'm actually pretty unhappy about his characterization in this show compared to the book. That being said, the scene in the throne room was an exception. It was perfect. His initial ignorance of the nuisance of these situations, to his begrudge acceptance of his grandfather's wise advice, and finally ending with his pointed disregard of his grandfather's opinion in favor of his own naive compassion and seemingly genuine empathy. Aegon in the book is kind of a spoiled but harmless oaf. He's a horn dog, yeah, but not a deviant like here. He likes to drink, maybe a bit too much, but he's not a fucking alcoholic at 14 like in this. He's just a degenerate in this for some reason, in the book he's not fit to be king not because he's proto-Joffrey but because he's a good-natured but immature and irresponsible rich kid. Not a villain, just a dummy in a bad situation that he couldn't control and didn't understand.

Losing her father, & two of her children in such a short span of time would be absolutely heartbreaking- it's almost merciful that she didn't get to see BabyVisenya take her first breath, or grow into her own person, like she did her son - Luke is a young life cut tragically short- I can't even begin to imagine getting into that headspace; she doesn't have time to mourn her father's death, or her daughter's, but she's made focus on the usurpation of her promised throne- politics, rather than the personal - but then it all just compounds in the loss of Lucerys...

The Blood and Cheese scene in the book is PERFECT, dramatic, cliffhanging and most of all explains the trauma of Helaena in the relationship with her survived son and the hatred of Alicent towards the Blacks. Instead of let her watch the murder of her nephew, they decided to let her have an useless sex scene with ser Criston. What. A. Shame.

In the book, Jaehaerys’ death is so much worse and sad. Blood and Cheese basically take all three of them hostage, and have her two children with knives to their throats, and demand Helaena chose which child dies. Helaena begs them to kill her and spare her children, but they say they will kill all three of them if she doesn’t choose.
She reluctantly tells them to kill her second child, as they may be too young to understand what’s happening. Blood and Cheese then tell her second child that their mother wants them dead, laugh about it; then proceed to kill the child she didn’t choose instead, as his mother screams with maddening grief, and the other child lives with the knowledge that their mother chose them to die. So messed up for everyone involved.

I love that you just had to imagine horrible things happening in the last scene. This isn't a scene that needs to be shown explicitly (not even sure it's legal lol)... but just hearing that first child-like scream and the sound of slicing is HORRIFYING. I saw some one say it's not the red wedding, but it doesn't have to be, we already have one of those. That scene makes me squirm just thinking about the sounds I heard. You're left to imagine what Helena must have scene as she left the room. We'll have more than enough violence to go around this season. HOT-D IS fucking BACK.

    • @thirdcoinedge
      @thirdcoinedge 3 місяці тому +20

It's something that HOTD is doing better than GOT, I think, in that the violence shown is not meant to be sensationalistic just for the sake of shocking audiences, but rather for disgust & making you realize how disturbing the violent aspects of this world really are, especially over a century before the War of the Five Kings, which leaving it up to the audience's imagination really helps with. It's not meant to make you go "Oh my GOD!!!" so much as "...Oh my God." It started with Aemma's death in the first episode, and now at the start of the second season we have a child being butchered off-screen. Really helps cement the more melancholic & tragic tone of the show, as civil wars do tend to be quite tragic in how truly ugly & gruesome they become (case in point: the US Civil War having the highest body count of US soldiers to this day).

Rhaenyra and Jace sharing a moment to grieve for Lucerys was beyond heartbreaking and having Helaena witness the demise of her son was beyond tragic as she even tried to warn everyone due to her abilities and no one listened. The grief of these two mothers will only escalate the upcoming conflict.
Starting off the Season in Winterfell and hearing the nostalgic theme from the North it felt like coming back home except it’s hundreds of years in the past and seeing the Wall was a massive bonus.
Aegon has no experience when it comes to being King and let’s be honest he had gross moments where it spoke volumes that he was not fit to rule the Seven Kingdoms. A the realm is being ruled by a fool who has a possible inferiority complex and will be a loose cannon which will lead up to him being burned, crushed, and mentally unstable.
As for Alicent…..what is there to say except she started off Season 2 by being a massive hypocrite with Criston Cole breaking his vows to the Kingsgaurd “Honor and Dignity.” my fricking ass. This kind of dynamic will later on be toxic and even in the background Larys has spies all over the Red Keep so there’s going to be some blackmail. This information will label Alicent as a harlot who went from marrying the former King Viserys to shacking it up with the Commander of her son’s Kingsguard.

That’s life. They all act more believable here than in the book. Helaena sees Blood and Cheese as they are: men who do something for money, so it’s very smart of her to offer her necklace. And not every mother would sacrifice herself to save her children. And her walking into mom’s sex also completely realistic, people in the night do this kind of stuff.
Book version is really hard to believe: how tf two guys can take a Queen mother hostage in a guarded castle and then do all the theatrical shit they’ve done. In the show it’s very realistic. Two guys not knowing where they are, fearing they might get caught, tortured and killed want to leave the place as soon as possible but they want to do at least something not to go back empty handed.

@@Gallowglass7they didn’t, they’re upset because Helaena wasn’t forced to choose which son should die, when her second son doesn’t exist in the show.
Also, they have no consideration about what they can and can’t show on mainstream television. Heleana being forced to choose which son to die with her begging and screaming before they sliced her older son’s throat in front of her wasn’t going to happen in 2024.
I know mothers with young kids who almost broke down during this scene. If they copied the book directly they won’t carry on watching it.
Also, they made her character intelligent in the show. Book Helaena is extremely uninteresting (it’s a historical account so none of the characters are in-depth) and she knew they had come for a son. She knew even if she begged them to take her life, they would kill him anyway, and possibly her daughter too. The best thing she could have done in this scenario was save her other child and raise the alarm.
