So I tried this one, and could vomit safely (without worrying about asphyxiating myself). The exercise helped, my vomiting has stopped, and I will keep doing this exercise as long as I still have vertigo symptoms.

in each try . you felt dizziness? i did only once i felt dizziness during the process but then it got cured no more vertigo but the next day i felt like I am in a boat but not all the time.may be I should do once more?
I learned this yesterday. I’ve been dealing with vertigo fir 15 years with no relief. I just had to wait a few weeks for it to go away. I did this last night and was good until I brought my head parallel to the floor. I was so dizzy I had to lay on the floor but kept my head in the 45 degree position but laying down. I’ve never felt dizziness like that. Came upright and was ok. Did it again and barely anything. Woke up this morning and was fine
Omg 15years? I had mine for almost a year. The dizzy spells slowed down, but I can’t lay down on my back . I’ve tried it everything , I hope this helps
Nope . I went to an ENT doctor she gave me meds for the fluids in my ear. And it went away; I think it was allergies with trapped fluids in my ear . So just go to your ENT it’s an easy fix
@@marymeron937 Hello Mary, that's my problem! I'm fine laying down on my side (slightly funny on my right side, but generally ok) but I cannot lay down on my back anymore, are you happy you went to see the ENT doctor? can you lay down on your back now? kindest regards from Australia, Jo

I have had this at main fall or spring weather change three times, last time I was desperate and found this. It took a couple of days, but it was a much shorter bout. This morning I woke up with just a touch as I turned my head in bed to see my clock. Wasn’t terrible, could still walk without spins, so I got on the floor and did the exercise, which made me throw up, but I put the head of my bed up (lord bless sleep number beds for times like these!) and dozed for a couple of hours. I did feel better right after doing it, and no more motion nausea. Two hours later, I have a tad of a headache, but have been able to get up and move around. Not brave enough to do anything that makes me dip or lower my head, but I know I can do the exercise again. This is the first time I have been able to head ( ha ha ) off a vertigo incident before it got nastier. Thanks so VERY much!!

I'm 61 and I've had mild vertigo since my early 20's, I just didn't know what it was. I fell and hit my head around 3 years ago, and separated my scalp from my skull. Ever since then, my vertigo has gotten progressively worse, to the point that I'm frequently unable to leave my home because of how severe it is. I'll just sit clutching my bed post with my eyes shut. I desperately need help!
If there is any way you can go see a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehab, that would be the best option. They can help you figure out what kind of vertigo you have (there are many kinds), and hopefully help you find a program that will help.
@@AskDoctorJo , I will ask my doctor. I'm so impressed by the fact that you responded to me. I’ve done a similar to this earlier, helped- did. It few times- just did your version- felt NO spin during entire time. Here’s an issue. I’m 63, kinda active..Hurts my knees- I have spondylolthesis and am still getting quad strength back with limited motion. Still- worked great. Bravo! Note- I had labyrinthitus in 2015. This stuff did nothing. Vestibular therapy, 3 months dizzy. Sucked. Life goes on
Hello, it would really mean a lot to me if I got an answer to these questions… First of all thank you so much for this video! As someone living in a country that doesn’t really have appropriate health care this video was a life saver! So my mom had been diagnosed with BPPV after she had a very strong episode of dizziness that lead to her falling and hurting her head. Since then she had that episode one more time but luckily she was sitting so she didn’t fall. She describes them as if ‘the ceiling has become floor and vice versa’. She also gets them after a slight head movement to the right or if she suddenly lifts her head up. So after seeing this video, she started doing this exercise, and she did it for the first time yesterday. When she lifted her head up from the floor she felt a bit dizzy but thats all, it wasn’t anything major. She repeated the exercise today again, and when she lifted her head she felt the ‘very bad episode’, the one she felt when she fell. She repeated the exercise again and she again felt it but it was very mild. So my question is, is there a rule for how long she should be doing this exercise because for now she does it once in the morning, and she still feels lightheaded but did not have the strong episode? Is it possible for bppv to completely go away with this exercise? (she also went to an ENT and he did the Eupley manoeuvre but he said that it didn’t work because she didn’t feel dizzy while he was doing it)
You're welcome! Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate your mom. Everyone is different. If it is BPPV, yes, it is possible for it to go away completely. With these movements and some others for BPPV, they do sometimes cause people to feel worse before they feel better because it is reproducing the symptoms. I hope they continue to help.
Thank u so much DrJo I got big relief after doing but after 2 weeks again it has come back . I am doing again same manoeuver getting relief . Really thankful to you
Gosh! You are a life saver. I had BPPV for about two months and had met ENT, Ortho and Neuro without any luck. Had persisting symptoms of giddiness, nausea n instability. Started feeling sick most of the time as I can't move my head as before. There were times when I dreamt about pre-BPPV lifestyle n craved if I can go back to that somehow. Then started researching on my own n landed on this video eventually. Gosh! It did wonders. Just tried only once n got rid of the issue completely. Never ever imagined the solution to my biggest problem is this simple. Thank you so much! Tried Brandt-Daroff from your other video for about three days before this which made some improvements but slowly on a day to day basis but this exercise cured in about 5mins.
Thank you Dr. Joe I just started watching your channel and I’ve been doing the exercises and I’m confident I will be feeling better very soon again I do thank you
After over 6 weeks of terrible vertigo and the Epley wasn't working I tried this 3 days ago and it seems to be working so far. Fingers crossed. Thank you. I keep doing it once a day in the evenings as I still feel like I am walking on a cruise ship am thinking it's residual effect of the semicircular canals being so irritated/hyperstimulated all that time.
THANK YOU for mentioning you may feel worse before you feel better. I couldn't even drive for several hours after doing this because I was off balance. Later I was fine.
I hope this works.. I have been suffering for years unfortunately my gp isn't helpful he just prescribes bethestine.. Its causing me to take so much time off work on a number of times.. So gonna try this
Thank you for posting this! I do suffer with BPPV! Really not a great feeling, lol! But having your video to remind me how to do it is wonderful, thanks!
Vertigo for the first time at 4:30 in the morning and in California you don't think is you but an earthquake. 5 day laiter, I am still dizzy. I ll try this before any medicine. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing good information, plz tell is this exercise is for Horizontal canal /vertical canals or both ,how to check the problem with which canal?
Thank an excellent video. I have been diagnosed with BPPV in my right ear. Just clarifying that you look to the right side when doing this manoeuvre? Thank you in advance
Thank you Dr. Jo. Since it is not Epley's, I suppose it is not for posterior canal BPPV. Can you tell us is this designed for horizontal canal or superior canal origin of vertigo? Thanks again.
I've just got BPPV two mornings ago i just started doing this exercise and i notice a difference each time it's done hopefully this goes away by tomorrow morning or later tonight i have never felt this before pretty sure i've done about 4 or 5 of these already today
I have been dealing with BPPV since late October 19. It first hit rolling over to my left side in bed and was terrifying. I had no idea what it was. This was followed by a day of nausea. But then the spinning just went away for a month. However, I was just lightheaded all the time. In the Beginning of December it hit again while driving. I managed to safely get off the road and limp back home slowly. That day I went to a Physical therapist and they diagnosed me with BPPV in the left ear. They did the epley, sent me home, I slept sitting up for two days. Again, the spinning stopped, but I was constantly lightheaded and just off. The day after Christmas was my best day! No dizzy at all, I felt like my old self! That night I slept for the first time on my left ear since this began, I woke up yesterday and when I looked down everything went into a spin again. My wife guided me through the Epley three times and while it got a little better each time, it was still there. This morning I did the Epley again and at first nothing on the left. Then it felt like something just broke free and I spun briefly on the left. I can actually notice my eyes twitching as I stair at a point on the wall. The right side was a very brief and tame spin. MY QUESTIONS: Doe this eventually go away? Do I try different maneuvers? Am I ok to sleep on my right "Non-affected" side? Thanks
Sorry to hear it's not going away. Was the PT you saw a vestibular rehab specialist? That would really be the person to go see (again if needed). Depending on which canal it's in often determines what maneuver you should do, so that should really be determined by someone who can evaluate you in person.
If the eply is not working for you, it is not the right maneuver for you. Try doing this half somersault. I had the same problem on the left and for days I kept trying that eply and it only made it worse and more dizzy. I finally did this one and by the third time in a row the spinning and dizziness stopped. I have had vertigo for 15 years and this one always works. Eply not so much. Thank God for Dr Foster, the doctor that came up with this. Look for her video interview and watch the whole thing… you will be alright! Good luck!
I went to the ER because I felt my world turned upside down and I thought I was dying. I was diagnosed with Virtigo. I felt dumb for going to the ER for this but it scared the hell out of me. Is that normal? That feeling that your head detaches from your body from one second to the other and then feeling out of balance?
@@itgirlsguideph7549 I found some exercises to move the crystals in my ear to the correct position and it seems to be helping a lot more. Thank you for asking.
I went to the ER for basically the same thing and also had a CT scan. But my doctor thinks BPPV and ER doctor said anxiety. So now I have Zoloft and hope the exercises help
Don’t feel dumb, I had the same thing happen. I am still having issues with vertigo and some nystagmus 6 months after i had my first episode. I’ve seen every doctor possible basically except for a neurologist. They all say BPPV, and to give it time and it will “go away”. Still a daily battle and it’s really debilitating. I had the whole 9 yards done including CT scan. I can’t seem to find anyone who can help 😕
Can i take stugeron before doing this? Please 😢 When i get dizzy my stomach gets upset for so long and i cant bear it Please reply, hopefully i can take that pill
Thank you for this great info! Question: if I'm not sure which ear is the culprit, is it ok for me to do this for each side, and if so, how long should I wait in between the two? Thanks!
You're welcome! For this particular movement, it really should only be done on the affected side. There are maneuvers like the Brandt-Daroff that's performed on both sides, but it's really best to get a proper diagnosis as the treatment is sometimes different depending on which canal is affected. If there is any way you can go see a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehab, they can evaluate you, and help make a program that will work best for you.
I have issues with verigo after vertebal artery dissection with a Little stroke in brainstam. Now 10 months ago. Does this excercice help for the issue?
Just got vertigo a week ago for the first time. Yucky yucky yucky. Anyway, I can't even get past the first step on this. Tried a few times but am convinced I'll black out if I hold the position, the dizziness is too powerful.
Hey keep searching for vertigo maneuver on UA-cam. There is a 'look to the side' version of this maneuver that my GF has had great success with and her vertigo was induced by backward head movement. Ok? Love you, be well.
Is it common to have vertigo in both ears? and if you do, how long do you have to wait before you can do the other side. Will it cause the crystals in the treated ear to dislodge again?
one question dr. Jo you showed this position only in one side but I didn't hear you mention to do the other side as well but I presume doing the other side as well.
@@AskDoctorJo Well I have been told it is BPPV , and I have tinnitus ringing in my ears too! I am super healthy and I teach swim lessons every summer and experience vertigo a lot...I used to be able to identify that it was just one ear or the other, but today, as I was exercising , and lay down on my back, my head was spinning! I just hate it, and I had good luck with the epley maneuver before, but this is different since it's the straight back vertigo...Like when I went to the dentist, and they laid me straight back! I tried you half somersault, but no spinning when I did it today...I appreciate you responding and trying to help me...
Hmm, weird. It might be worth trying the Brandt-Daroff if it happens again. That one you are going to each side, so it's not specific to one side or the other.
Thank you. I'm suffering in vertigo last 12 years. And I did empley manuver .and it was remove. But now It hasben start again from last 10 days. How can i cure ?
Hi dr jo, I have bppv in both ears. How do I carry out these movements when both ears are affected. I’m into week 4 now so feeling awfully hopeless. I appreciate your help. Thank you!
Hi Dr Jo, I have been advised to practice vertigo exercises. I tried your suggested exercises but never felt dizzy during each of those 30 seconds. Does it mean that my issue is not vertigo? Or maybe spinning does not happen for everyone?
I am trying to understand the difference between head down, and head down and to the side. (2:50-2:55) It appears to be, as per gravity, no difference. Is the head moved very rapidly to the right (or left?) Thanks for all your videos..

AskDoctorJo yes they are specialists. I will be making another appointment. Thanks.
You're welcome. Good luck.
Good luck!
Can you do both sides? I'm not sure what side is worse? And if so do I have to wait 15 mins in between each one of those as well?
Dr. Jo, should I close my eyes during the process or keep my eyes open?
I went to the ER because I felt my world turned upside down and I thought I was dying. I was diagnosed with Virtigo. I felt dumb for going to the ER for this but it scared the hell out of me. Is that normal? That feeling that your head detaches from your body from one second to the other and then feeling out of balance?
How r you now?
Same thing happened to me!Like i was in a ride that was rolling upside down!
So doing this will fix the vertigo as that Epley manuever doesnt seem to work fo rme
Can i take stugeron before doing this?
Please 😢
When i get dizzy my stomach gets upset for so long and i cant bear it
Please reply, hopefully i can take that pill
I sometimes do. I hope you're better now
@@emmajane7745 thank you
Im way better now! I did her exercises it they worked really good! It was like a nightmare. Feels good to be normal again
Is this recommended to treat residual dizziness?
Looks like a easy therapy to do
Can we do both left and rightside bcos am not able to find which side dizz.. i feel it centre
Hi Doctor Jo every we make it 🌹
My ENT told me that my tinnitus could be caused by loose crystals because it started with a viral ear infection. Is that true and would this help?
Thank you
You're welcome.
Do we do this exercise on both sides? I’m new to this.
Just the affected side.
Hlo namaste doctor i have this problm so how many times need to do this Exercise 1day
Really early to tell for sure, but it seems to work really well
How do I know which side to do the maneuver on? My vertigo doesn't feel like it's on one side or the other.
Hello,
I had severe vertigo which seems to be over since this exercise twice.
My question is, do I still have to keep doing these exercises thanks?
@@buzzardbeatniks hello, can you explain more please?
Can i do this regularly to avoid further attacks of vertigo please reply
Sadly you can't.
They make sense, if a Crystal is in the wrong place. Otherwise no sense at all...
Hey Doc…
One question; do you keep your eyes open or close during this process?
Open.
How to figure out the ear that is the cause of the vertigo?
Hi there! My family doctor diagnosed me with bppv. I tried this and i felt no dizziness. Should i still try it again or try another exericise
You should hang up side down by your feet.
I have issues with verigo after vertebal artery dissection with a Little stroke in brainstam. Now 10 months ago. Does this excercice help for the issue?
Do you have to do the eye exercises with this one .. thankyou
It really just depends on what direction your nystagmus is. Your doctor or therapist should be able to help you with that.
Dr. Jo.
I have done this and I still feel dizzy.. PLEASE HELP..!!
Hi!
How do feel today?
Just got vertigo a week ago for the first time. Yucky yucky yucky. Anyway, I can't even get past the first step on this. Tried a few times but am convinced I'll black out if I hold the position, the dizziness is too powerful.
Hey keep searching for vertigo maneuver on UA-cam. There is a 'look to the side' version of this maneuver that my GF has had great success with and her vertigo was induced by backward head movement. Ok? Love you, be well.
thank you!
You're welcome!
I have saw a few videos where they say to wear a neck collar for a day to keep head level, and to sleep sitting up for this time. Is that recommended?
No, that's debunked. Scientific research proved the exercise is enough, no measures or head positions necessary afterwards.
That’s only for the eply maneuver
do you turn your head or your face toward the affected ear
Turn your head.
Is it common to have vertigo in both ears? and if you do, how long do you have to wait before you can do the other side. Will it cause the crystals in the treated ear to dislodge again?
Can you clarify that we only do the exercise turning our head to the size we feel the spinning ?
one question dr. Jo you showed this position only in one side but I didn't hear you mention to do the other side as well but I presume doing the other side as well.
Just the one side that is affected.
What is the best method for vetigo when you lay straight back and get dizzy?
Unfortunately, I don't know since I can't evaluate you. There are many kinds of vertigo. Have you been diagnosed with a specific vertigo?
@@AskDoctorJo Thank you sooooo much for responding! It is such a blessing to have your videos to turn to!
You're welcome! Good luck.
Thank you. I'm suffering in vertigo last 12 years. And I did empley manuver .and it was remove. But now It hasben start again from last 10 days. How can i cure ?
How can I know doc which side I have vertigo left or right ?
And what causes this ?
I have it December 2018 one time
2019 : two times
2020 : two times
When you're laying in bed and get dizzy if you turn your head to the right it's right ear or vice versa for left. You can get it in both ears
COVID side effect is vertigo. MANY people have this side effect and no one has seen any relief. So do you think this might help?
Have you been diagnosed with bppv ?
Hi dr jo, I have bppv in both ears. How do I carry out these movements when both ears are affected. I’m into week 4 now so feeling awfully hopeless. I appreciate your help. Thank you!
If you have a side that's worse, I would work on that one first.
AskDoctorJo ok thank you
You're welcome.
lady bird how you feeling after this maneuver ?
Can I do this twice when I awake? It’s being stuburn😮😊
I got vertigo a week ago and it's horrible and I was searching for exercises and this one popped out do you do the exercise to both ears or just one?
I’m muslim and I doing this maneuver 5 time perday. Because this maneuver has already included with my prayer (solah).
Hi Dr Jo, I have been advised to practice vertigo exercises. I tried your suggested exercises but never felt dizzy during each of those 30 seconds. Does it mean that my issue is not vertigo? Or maybe spinning does not happen for everyone?
There are many different forms of vertigo. These are specifically for BPPV, which is a positional vertigo.
I am spinning during the very last step where I am completely upright, 'fixing my hair'.
Big thank
You're welcome.
I can't do manoeuvre at home can i do the exersice instead of it ??
This works!
hey Dr Jo does this work for HORIZONTAL BPPV??????
It's for the posterior canal.
I am trying to understand the difference between head down, and head down and to the side. (2:50-2:55) It appears to be, as per gravity, no difference. Is the head moved very rapidly to the right (or left?) Thanks for all your videos..
l have very bad vertigo l am being sick and in the bath room at the same time if l can make it on medication can get down on floor but have a hard time get up from floor will this help me if l can do it
is it ok to do these movements with your eyes closed to avoid getting sick from the spinning?
You can do with ur eyes closed
