Your choice in blending tools are wonderful. I bought a set of cosmetic brushes for $12. They do a wonderful job with soft blends for draing and painting. I'm learning so much from your videos. I practice drawing a few minutes here and there every day. You said in another video to practice drawing an eye, nose mouth rather than the whole face. Practice makes perfect. I heard someone say, "Failure is the best teacher. So fail till you are good at it". Your artwork and music reveal your passion.

Yes, when practicing, draw a small section of the face instead. It allows you to focus better and really spend your time perfecting that small drawing. Whole face drawing is when you're ready to commit yourself.

How long does it take you to finish a drawing? I am planning to set a timer to limit roughly how long I should finish a drawing. Some times I take so much time on one drawing or one part of the drawing that I am struggling and it is not productive. Some parts like the mouth and hair I spent way too much time on it and still ends up looking not too good. I even get demotivated from drawing because of it. I think timing myself roughly for each part can help me progress through drawing more efficiently and not staying on the same thing for long periods of time. What do you think? Thanks for listening to this! Your portraits look great, I really like this style and I am trying to use your style. You are like the motivation for me for drawing! It reminds me that I can draw good like you in years (I hope)

Hi Adrian, I usually tell people to not set a timer because why introduce unnecessary pressure, but if you think it would help you progress then it's okay. My drawing speed varies, some drawings might take me like 10 hours because the pose was easy, or I didn't put a complicated background, or the paper is small. My longest drawing was 24 hours, because it was a big A2 drawing, I spent too much time drawing the hair and the background was super dark. But generally I'd say 8-10 hours. I know my time not because I time it, but because I film the drawing process for UA-cam. Also I usually don't draw in 1 sitting. I need like 3-4 days to complete 1 drawing. Also it's a good strategy to not draw the whole portrait when practicing. It's like rehearsal for a concert! Try to draw only the nose today. Then the mouth tomorrow on different papers. Take a small portion of the hair, and try just that next. And when you think you're ready, try the whole drawing that's the concert! You might think why bother drawing the same thing twice, but you might also be surprised how much you learn from your previous same drawing. ☺️

7:33 - The reason that Staedler 8B is different is because it's not just graphite and clay, they mix carbon into it too which is more like charcoal(graphite and charcoal actually come from carbon).

The idea of freehand drawing not being difficult is funny to me cause ye, it makes working with all the details and proportions difficult, but for me, I can't for the love to me understand the grid or shapes and everything like that so I've been freehanding my whole life 😅

There is a problem that happens in my portrait drawing. When I try to blend areas to achieve a smoother texture, what happens is that the areas are smudged and have a unpleasant shade. If I don't use the brush to smoothen out at the end, then the mechanical pencil shade looks dull, not uniform and rough. Is there a problem in it and how do I fix it? I usually shade with mechanical pencil first, and then use a brush to smoothen it in the end.

Hi Adrian. For me to achieve the smooth texture, I have to : back and forth shade with pencil - brush with small brush - shade - brush - shade - brush. As many times as necessary. And I don't mindlessly brush it over. When brushing, I really look for the uneven lighter area and try to darken it with my brush to match the value with the surrounding areas. Then of course it's still not smooth. So again, shade the uneven area with pencil, and repeat the process. If you do it this way, each layer you do should make your drawing look smoother and smoother. The more layers the smoother. This naturally requires patience and takes me a long time. Hope it helps!
