Hi Don. Yet again you've demonstrated why you're my goto guy for cabinet work. I have a Blaupunkt Riviera H2154 with similar cabinet issues and a pair of those gold stripes to boot. I was wondering how I'd replicate those but no longer. Many thanks. 👏👏👏
Wow, looks and sounds beautiful, today was great I got to watch two videos back to back yours and David Tiptons, my two favorite radio people from Australia , I’m a big fan Craig from California.
Awesome restoration Don, sounds awesome too, Case restoration went really well too, that choice of initial staining seemed almost designed for this Radio and everything else seemed to slot into space after that.
Cheers Dave. I think I surprised myself with the cabinet. It almost went to plan, except I found that the grain filler dissolved the gold paint on the stripes so I had to take it all off & start again, putting the stripes on top of the grain filler. The video was already running too long so I cut that out. I can't believe I missed that final aerial coil adjustment when doing the alignment. That was the problem all along. Live & learn I guess.
It looks absolutely beautiful now Don and sounds great too. Great job on the cabinet. I'm so pleased it worked out after all that hard work with the switches.
Pure facelift, and the postal service should have a compulsory look at this video 😖 And taping that gold band was a very nice tip. In the end, it all came together with that lucky find, the dial glass; kudo's Warren Brough !
WOW Don. what a transformation, I know we can't hear the richness of the sound after it has gone through UA-cam and the telly, but, can imagine. (Oh and it looks ok too!)
Who'd have thought the kerf saw lines were a weak point. Totally amazing restore and that bass sound would definitely compliment any song of Barry White's. Well done, love it.
Don, it looks beautiful, i imagine that's how it would have looked like all those years ago at the manufacturers. It looks and sounds amazing :-D I'm sure you will find something to fix the back, no one would ever notice it once it was coated with blackboard paint or similar. That new station glass looks loverly :-D It's been a nightmare to fix the electronics. Look out for david, he might kidnap the loverly radio.
Don, your patience and perseverance paid off in the end. it is great to see the old European stations on the dial. They are all frequency numbers these days. Dublin, Cork and Athlone have ceased broadcasting on the medium wave. The Irish long wave service closed down on April 14th 2023 and the DAB is Dead And Buried for years. Your Bush VHF64 set would still hold its own here in Ireland as we only have the FM service left and that is being threatened by the cheaper to run internet streaming services. Well done again.
Brilliant work Don. A reliative had one (or very similar) before I came to Australia in 1967. I always remember it sounded good. We had a Sobel which was similar. I could/should have kept it, but it only covered 88-98MHz and was such a lump of a thing I didn't have space for it at the time. It of course went to the tip. Sounds like you live in a farm yard, chooks, planes, traffic, children, garden tools. When the plane flew over and made that crashing noise. It would drive me nuts! Just watched David's video. You are too generous giving him that mint clock-radio!~Mine are nowhere as good, although I do have two NOS clocks. (I'm to scared to pull them apart!)
Congratulations! You certainly showed that radio who was boss, and you had to do virtually everything to it. I had my doubts about your pinstriping technique but that worked really well. Best wishes, and take a victory lap!
Fantastic result on a set which most people would have given up on when that switch mechanism started shorting. Seems to be sounding great too (the radio, not the rooster). That definitely makes all the effort worthwile! 🐓
Cheers Roberto and welcome!. Dave Tipton's brought me a few new subscribers which is great. He's retired but I'm not. I somehow manage to fit this in around my full time job!.
That radio really sounds good. The microphone picked it up pretty well, epecially when you were on the classical music station. I listen to a fair bit of classical music and this radio really does it justice. It's great. All that hard work has paid off
Thanks. Yes classical music does sound good on it. I noticed rap / hip hop sounds terrible on it - it's not built to handle the subsonic bass. No great loss though.
Really apppreciate showing all the work needed in restoring the damn thing Don. I would have given up on it long ago. Impressive cabinetry work , just like your fellow mate down under David Tipton. You both do excellent work and videos! You can make an external antenna connector using a two terminal block for the FM portion and that will most likely improve reception with a long dipole antenna setup. Must better than that crappy internal one, but ONLY if you find the reception quality lacking in it as it was a weak spot in the design. I see yours sounds great! Cheers, Steve
Cheers Steve, I had to keep going after Warren sent me the glass & switch from the UK ! The FM antenna gives very good reception although it's very directional. I might try experimenting with the mounting & maybe wrapping the dipole ends around the sides of the cabinet. The sound on FM is superb though.
Grate restoration? Don was working on a radio cabinet, not a grate that stops cattle or sheep going beyond a point in a road. I think you meant "great restoration"!
@@Donno308 Sorry, Don, but mistakes like that just shouldn't be made in in a country like Australia with our education standard is supposed to be far better than America's. It really is a clumsy mistake, like you'd expect an American to make.
Like I said Don, stick with its restoration and you will not be disappointed with the outcome. That Bush VHF64 radio is performing just the way I remember them way back during the early 1970s when I was an apprentice service tech. I feel happy you are very pleased with what you have achieved here. Look after that radio, and it should give you many years of faithful service. At this point, I will recommend getting your hands upon any of the following Bush radios: DAC90, DAC90A, and/or DAC10 - perhaps for some time in the future? Loved seeing all six episodes: look forward to your next radio restoration upload. Best regards from Phil.
Hi Phil. Yes I remember your encouraging comments from the beginning. Positive comments like that make a real difference to my motivation to keep going with a difficult restoration. Yes I would love to get my hands on a DAC90 or similar. If I see one for sale I'll grab it but they're pretty rare over here. Cheers
@neilforbes416 good old VHF my unit still has the VHF antenna on it since VHF signal was switched off but still picks up a very good signal picture quality wise the quality is 98/100
That finish on the cabinet is amazing Don. I decided not to strip and refinish mine as there was only a little crazing of the lacquer. So It was touched up and polished. But, seeing how yours turned out, I am tempted to risk putting in the extra work. As you say the mic and reproduction through YT on a PC doesn't do these sets Justice to the quality of their audio output. I have enjoyed witnessing such a determined and skillful restoration. Catch you on the next one. Dave
Cheers Dave. That little Rode lapel mic doesn't do too badly though. It picks up that bloody rooster really well! I usually hesitate to strip and re-finish a cabinet unless it's pretty bad. It's only original once, as they say. You might try just rubbing it back lightly with fine wet & dry and re-polishing it before you decide.
Hi Don, what a wonderful ending to an epic journey , outstanding results you have achieved once more, would love to own a radio like that. . Thanks for the videos .
