  • Now that my countertops are in, I am using Bondo to fill all the seams. Bondo cures very fast so you should only take a little at a time as you don't want it to dry out before you finish (like it did to me)! Once I finished applying the Bondo I sanded everything down so it was nice and smooth. As you can see it worked perfectly and I am finally ready to paint my countertops and create the faux marble look!

Hi Crystel, I purchased the ebook however I didn't see where it said what type of mdf board to buy and if I should purchase from Home Depot or Lowes. I did see that you purchased two pieces of the 3/4 inch mdf and placed them on top of each other. Im not sure where I should purchase them from I noticed Lowes has a different mdf board (melamine board) that is white already while Home Depot has the mdf panel

Melamine is not the same. It is made from wood chips and is a finished veneer version of particle board that is used a lot of times in non-structural non-visible areas of woodworking. Use the 3/4 MDF. It should run you around $60 a sheet. Cheaper countertops do use particle board with a laminate sheet glued to the top, but MDF will provide more rigidity and strength. Keep in mind, in areas where moisture is likely to make contact with the MDF to use a heavy amount of high grade silicone caulking. Around the dishwasher if you have one installed in your application, use a vapor barrier where the steam would rise under the countertop edge. These are also sometimes called condensation strips.

Did you use 2 pieces of mdf? If so, what size did you use? I plan to do this for my bathroom counters!

Hi - I used 2 pieces of 3/4 inch mdf. I wanted to lift the counter up a bit and just used strips around the edges underneath to bump it up. It would have been too expensive to stack one entire countertop on another entire countertop. If you check out my instagram account, I've got the entire process highlighted on my stories under New House.

You could’ve filled those seams in with bondo too. Nice job though! Very detailed.
