Being someone who was suicidal in the past man it's so fucking cool to see what you've turned those feelings into. And to anybody struggling fight on for yourself and those you care about. Big ups from some guy vibing in Washington 😘✌
I met Dave (and Joji) at their show at Mercury Lounge in NYC. I approached him, despite not being THAT kind of guy. I had to tell him, "Your art has improved my time on Earth, and I have been struggling for months with my first true heartache at 50....and this kept me sane." I wasn't suicidal - but mostly because I have a kid. Dave was SO nice and embraced me, tore up his shirt and showed me the related tattoo, and told me that's what it was about and he related. These guys are all FOR REAL. Max, Donnie, Joon. They are SUCH nice guys. And I cannot speak for them, but I want you to know, their response would not be that you are "just some guy in Washington". Stick with it. No permanent solutions to temporary problems. Hit me up if it feels like it would help. Big empathetic hug.
The way he dances, the way he sings ,the music... This band sparks so much joy in me. I wish I could describe it, why I feel like crying when listening to every song on repeat... It feels like it's part of my soul if have been looking for.
So wild. I used to listen to this in 2015 before entering my first year of uni. It’s about to be 2020 and I’m done my degree and I’m going to be 23 soon. Times flies. This song really meant a lot to me then and it still does now. Absolute chaos and passion.
This band, I discovered them right after I was heavily suicidal two years ago. Listening to their music through the first year of college, allowed me to heal and process emotions that were still spent up from my mental health journey. I’m still struggling, but Gang Of Youths is my go-to music if I ever feel like I need to take a step back and reflect.
I’ve met these guys in person, some of the most beautiful, down to earth lads, such poets, deep artists. They deserve to be the absolute top of everything!!’
He’s even better live. Saw them earlier this month support Sam Fender and he was all over the stage dancing away. Never seen someone so happy to be on stage, I l loved his energy!
this song helped to keep me alive. i found these dudes almost a year ago. im always late to the party. i was having multiple panic attacks a day and if i put on this song and closed my eyes i could get through. listening now is like looking back to moments frozen in time. unbelievable how music can lift you, transform you, tear you down, build you up, remind you of things you’d like to never think of again, remind you of things you’d forgotten or never want to forget…. these guys are magicians and masters of their craft.
[Verse 1] Quit honking your horns, there's five other lanes And I am king of them all and faster than light With my fists in the air, if my body's alive Then my soul's unaware in braving the last Of this terrible wine, I've savoured the last And I've kissed it goodbye, there's no kind of right way To do what I'll do, but I'm king of the earth With impossible blood on this 3rd of June [Pre-Chorus] Hold on, officer, I know that I'm a danger to myself And it shows, 'cause I'm on the other side of the law [Chorus] There's no way tonight, as far as I know That heaven will take me, so I'm staggering home Show me the way, oh, show me the light Yeah, I'm drunk but I'm ready to kick some ass tonight [Verse 2] Still honking those horns, yeah, just drive around 'Cause you're all being ignored, deadpan and bright As I flip you the bird, I'm a pain in the ass Yeah, I'm a real piece of work, just waving my arms like Some terrible mime, and shaking my ass 'Til they kiss it goodbye, just show me the right things That I didn't do, oh, enlighten me now With impossible love from the former you [Pre-Chorus] Just tell everyone I know what I did, I did for us And in haste, 'cause I'm terrified of dying in vain [Chorus] There's no way tonight, as far as I know That heaven will take me, so I'm staggering home Wretched and wild, all glory and trash Yeah, I'm drunk but I'm ready to kick some fucking ass [Instrumental Break] [Chorus] There's no way tonight, as far as I know That heaven will take me, so I'm staggering home Show me the way, oh, show me the light Yeah, I'm drunk but I'm ready to kick some fucking ass tonight No way tonight, as far as I know That heaven will take me, so I'm staggering home Fire of my loins, oh, light of my life We’re vastly outnumbered every motherfucking time
I absolutely love this song. Whenever I feel down I throw open my bedroom windows and just let "Magnolia" blare and jump on my bed! The lyrics are fantastic, rebellious in a way. A work of art!
If it were American there would be potholes everywhere and a jungle of weeds growing out of the road. In the US they somehow have $700 billion to add to their military each year but not enough to fix basic infrastructure 🤔 Great country.
My partner introduced this band to me and many times we would talk about how this song would make us feel, and what it means to us as people who struggle. I think theres some sort of healing when things are talked about
The lyrics mean to me the struggle of dealing with suicidal thoughts more accurately being faced with tragic news and it's truly saddening to know that he had to go through this.
its the singers attempt at Suicide, the terrible wine was he was getting drunk, and going to throw himself in front of the truck, the bit about the phone was a mate ringing him and telling him he couldn't do it until he got there ... then he was allowed to do it, his mate sensibly called the police fortunately they turned up and helped him the title is he waited under the magnolia tree out the front of his dads place for his friend... him staggering home is getting off the suicide watch and going home .. powerful song

This band man. Everything seems to hit the right note. Only thing that's disappointing is it took me until 2021 to discover them. Continued success. You guys are awesome.

Shit bro, just turned 18 and bc of 2020 I'm more depressed now than I have been in 4 years. This song just hits it though omg, like I feel it in my bones
Hey I feel ya. You should look up the interview the lead singer did. It left me sad happy crying on my floor and this song hits even harder. But just know we are all in the same boat no need to go down by yourself. Talk to somebody anybody and seek what makes you happy as best you can. Big ups from some guy in Washington wish you the best (22 btw I've been there nearly shot myself at 13 but I've been on a path of learning love myself and to endure the hard times to cherish those moments of joy. Hopefully you can find your path but dont beat yourself up and goodluck)
I go through phases of binge listening this song. As I listened and sang along, I realised that its the 3rd of June. 😂 Man I love these guys, glad to see them on Aussie soil again.
I play this song so loud in my car as I drive down the highway to the beach, window down, sun setting over the ocean, no where in particular I'm driving, but I like to pretend I'm seeing a girl
Am I allowed to think that he is the new Mick Hutchence *just saw him opening for Chris Cornell in Perth, love the voice instantly..thank you for delivered such wonderful tunes-The Book Of Love was amazing, Peter Gabriel would be proud that someone sang it beautifully that nights
I thought the same thing when I saw him support Cornell in Brisbane. After seeing the whole band in April, I'm convinced he's the best frontman an Aussie band has had since Hutchence. He has such charisma on stage. They are a brilliant band and I hope they go onto even greater things
It's strange to think of this as a bop, knowing what inspired him to write this, but then I remember that can apply to almost 75% of all songs written: bops, but look deep enough, and there's real depth there.
I am applying for my masters degree, I have over 20 tabs open, books all over my desk, 3 sources to study from and writing my thesis and statement at the same time. My mind is trying to grasp the fear of the future, leaving everything, the "what if's" the regret and reality of trying to stay in the moment to study all this. Somehow I came to this video (I saw their cover of middle east blood and just had to look into them) I am so awestruck by this. For 5 minutes, I listened to this beautiful tune and his powerful voice, I just stared at this very lovable guy doing his goofy dancing that for some reason seemed to have a more profound meaning like masking some really deep sadness and anger (which I guess is the message of the song). For 5 minutes I just put this in fullscreen and just stared at my screen and quite simply started thinking of the beauty in life, I forgot everything and at the same time seemed to see everything as well, it was fucking beautiful I love this!!!!! Any other recommendations from this band? I have just discovered them and i am already a big fan of David Leaupepe :O [i know this is a rly pretentious comment and it's like chill, but i'm in a really deep place rn lol] Greetings from Palestine, have a great day all :)
I don’t know what it is about this song, but on a 14 hour flight I easily spent 8 of them listening to this song. I just could not stop, easily on if my all time favourites
One of the greatest songs to come out of Oz. Listened to it dozens of times but never seen the clip but stoked to see a MkIV R32 in the opening scene! Love it even more now!
This song is such a powerful one to me. I have been there and come out the other end a stronger and better person. This song is so many things to me and I play the hell out of it.

Right!! It feels like this song touches my soul. Brilliant
I feel this. It speaks to my soul. It's healing, so so healing.
It's so damn beautiful and honest. The fact he put Beyonce's dance in there, it's the 'i don't give a fuck' thoughts of someone on the edge.
Definitely a song i come back to at times.....

I have just discovered them and i am already a big fan of David Leaupepe :O [i know this is a rly pretentious comment and it's like chill, but i'm in a really deep place rn lol]
Greetings from Palestine, have a great day all :)

LOVE these guys beyond words, another Aussie band to be super proud of!
My absolute favourite song from this album. Beautiful!
And the video clip, ah. Such a simple concept, but brings such amazing vibes!
i don't understand how this band hasn't blown up yet, every song they've ever made is perfection. ❤️ this deserves 270 million views not 2.7

Thank you for making this song, it helped me when I was feeling so down and sorry for myself. You inspire people to say ‘yes’ to life. Thank you ❤
I don't really hear your music. I feel it. And i think that's beautiful.
I love the gang of youths tracks! Keep on kicking ass!

This clip gives me huge "10 Things I hate about you" vibes haha
+zzHusky YES.
+zzHusky Funny you say that, I thought his walking and dancing reminded me of the routine from 500 days of summer.
He's the hipster Bono
Thought the same thing. Combo of Heath from 10 Things The bleacher scene as well as INXS Michael Hutchence.
reminds me of a new age "singing in the rain " : )
Raw. Relatable. Real.
Thank you - you give us hope and your gigs make us feel alive.
Could not believe these guys are Australian. This quality of music does not come often from Aus. Utterly amazing.

This song is such a powerful one to me. I have been there and come out the other end a stronger and better person. This song is so many things to me and I play the hell out of it.

So underrated!
Triple J's top 100, thank you for leading me to this song and several others.... apparently my taste is music is best described as "Australian"
