Sound Blaster Hour of Power - Great 90s PC/DOS Music - NintendoComplete

  • A full hour of classic Sound Blaster PC tunes. Not a "Best of" nor a "Top 10" list, but rather a sampling of memorable, classic game themes. Hope you all enjoy it!
    All of the music was recorded directly from a 90s PC equipped with a Sound Blaster AWE32 card - one of the original ones stamped 1993 (it's a 14inch long 16-bit ISA card, it barely fits in the desktop case!) that provided its Sound Blaster 16 FM compatibility through the addition of the same Yamaha OPL3 chip - this means that this model of the AWE32 was essentially the best SB16 model enhanced with wavetable and (flaky) midi capabilities. The model card used is CT2760, if you want to use it as a comparison for other models of the AWE32 - they do differ pretty greatly in sound quality across the several hardware revisions. The 2760 is by far the best in my opinion.
    The video is mostly recordings of games playing through the SB16 Extended driver, allowing full use of the effects and stereo effects available on the OPL3. The last ten minutes or so are tunes recorded using "Advanced Wavetable Effects" processor, and are marked with an AWE32 logo in the corner.
    Songs included in the following order - all run in pure Dos 6.22:
    SB16 OPL3:
    Police Quest 3 The Kindred
    The Secret of Monkey Island
    Double Dragon 3 The Rosetta Stone
    Blue Force
    AD&D Eye of the Beholder
    Metal & Lace The Battle of the Robo Babes

    really hope you make a few more of these old pc/dos mixes. it takes me back to a simpler time. i play these during my kids jiu jitsu classes and they really dig them too. they're always asking me, "what game is this one from?" and sometimes i can see a big smile on their parents face and they'll be like "i used to play this when i was your age." really awesome stuff man.

      +lamasu Haha really? That's awesome :) I do plan on doing more. I have to wipe the hard drive though and reinstall everything first. Remember how insanely temperamental Windows drivers were? I swear, try to install the wrong certain of QuickTime and it totally melts down lol, and of course I wasn't smart enough to make a backup image at any point. So yes, absolutely. Just not sure when.

    At what tempo is the Tyrian Stage theme meant to be heard? I commonly hear it at around the same tempo on various youtube videos, but on my Pentium 133mhz laptop, it's slower on "Normal" game speed, and way too fast on the next highest game speed.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  8 років тому +1

      Hmm that's odd. The one in this video is correct. This was recorded from a P200MMX, but I remember it sounding exactly the same on the P75 that I used to play it on back when it was new

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  8 років тому

      +NintendoComplete I know for certain that the speed setting shouldn't change the music. Does the laptop have any power throttle settings that you can disable from the bios?

    • @Zuon94
      @Zuon94 8 років тому

      NintendoComplete I have disabled the power throttle. Before I did that, the game would have bursts of slowdown when a lot was on the screen. Disabling that did fix the slowdown, but it seems to me that the music is tied with the game's speed in Tyrian 2000.
      I don't think this should matter, but the laptop was imported from Latvia. I say it shouldn't matter though, because the power supply and monitor is fully compatible with the US power standards and refresh rates.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  8 років тому

      +Zuon94 Hmm I really have no idea then, sorry. I can't think of any other reason why that might be happening :/
