    The reason they swath it into windrows is that the wheat doesn't dry at the same rate -- when most of it's dry and ready there are still some green heads. Swathing insures it dries evenly and is all ready to cut at the same time.
    We didn't do it in Texas but lots of folks further north with a shorter season will do it to get the best yield

    I'm a paramedic now, but farming was, and always will be my first love. It was my first job and I still go back when needed on the weekends to help that old soggy man. My dad died when I was 19, after that he was and is my father figure. Waking up super early, and not quitting until the job is done. It taught me alot about hard work and the value of time. If it broke, you fixed it and kept trucking. This video is pure nostalgia for me. I can only hope to own my own farm one day. Thank you for this.

    How in the world can all the combines face one direction to pick up the swathes? The swathers go up one way and back the other laying the swathe. Half the combines would be picking up ''heads first' and other half straw first...........can these newer combines pick up ''straw first' without plugging or growling like a wounded buffalo? Somebody please explain..

    Brian.... an absolutely excellent video in every way! Good choice of music. I like the way you showed the swathing followed by the actual combining of the crop. Your camera was set perfectly: clear and stable footage, accurate colour, good composition, nice tracking shots, etc. And fortunately it appears that you had good weather, good lighting and little wind to deal with. I would like to ask what UAV you were using.... let me guess.... Inspire 1 or a Phantom. In any case, well done and keep up the good work. I would like to correspond directly with you and need to get your email address, but not advertise it here to the whole world. I don't seem to see contact info on your website. Kindest regards.....

      no grain is lost if you windrow it first it can help dry the wheat quicker and make it less of a hassle dealing with 18 45ft headers

    • @runningbear8537

      That was an advantage of the old reaping method. You save money on fuel to dry the grain and the straw will be ready to bale.

      Seams a waste of diesel to cut and then harvest. A combine ca do this once. You don’t have to burn the diesel 2 times and the wheat can be dried later...

      For there region and there climate and harvesting window this must be the most cost efficient method.
      Drying of grain using hot air heated by Diesel Burners or Natural Gas if you are lucky is also a costly operation.

Look at the machines in Europe..they are ahead of America on lots of big machines...and they are made by JohnDeere...Case..and others...farming is different for sure..

    This is a tractor driving backwards with a cutter wind-rower attachment on it.
    My question is, tractors are geared to drive forward, does this tractor have special gearing in it to run backwards?
    Next question.... Now he has it wind-rowed will there be another tractor type with the ability to harvest the wind-rows?
    If so, it seems like that a all-in-one combine would better suited for the job unless this is all they have.

      In Canada our harvest window is small. In low spots our crop can be grass green and hilltops ripe. Swathing is the best way to ripen it evenly. You can wait and try to spray it to dry down, but it takes longer and you really increase the chances of frost damage doing so. Once it's in the swath, there will be little to no frost damage. Three days of sun and wind after swathing it'll be evenly ripe. I've personally swath all my crops and I have been doing 5 to 6 miles an hour picking up wheat, barley, canola, and flax swaths and throwing nothing over and the straw is smashed to smithereens.

    Why windrow it first then run it thru a combine?

    • @bobnwashington

      To allow the grain to cure or reduce moisture, Tx., Mt., etc. has low humidity & can be harvested standing.

    • @88Henkie88
      @88Henkie88 8 років тому +8

      this can also be standing harvested right so for me it was also unclear why now you mow it put it in a windrow so the fibration can also loosen the grain and with an combine it s already in the machine so looks for me less losses and less work this is actually double

    • @MajSolo
      @MajSolo 7 років тому +15

      it is double work and extra work hours and extra fuel. But they obviously do not do it for fun. Somehow there is a reason and they have to do it this way. And they have invested in machines to do it this way. Which suggest that the conditions in that region make this process necessary every year. So they do it this way and have machines for it. Other farmers at other places in the world might just wait with the harvest or harvest with higher moisture then put it in a barn and blow air through the crop. I guess these guys do it this way to sort of kill the plant and speed up the ripening or something and reduce moisture.

      When your wheat is not ready for harvest but you have to harvest it, you basically got two choices. Cut it and come back with a combine a few days later, or spray it with a herbicide few days prior to harvest to kill the plant.

    Just curious is to why they are cutting against the way it was planted

    • @SgtUberGrunt
      @SgtUberGrunt 7 років тому

      there was lodging in the crop along the drill rows so cutting it against the lodge allows more to be collected by the windrower

      A swath roller to compress the swath into the stubble when cutting canola so it doesn't blow in the wind.
