- Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that Diane Abbott is "free to stand" as a Labour candidate in the upcoming general election.
For three days, the Labour leader maintained that her candidacy was out of his hands and up to the party's national executive committee (NEC). However, the issue had become a major distraction from Labour’s election campaign.
Starmer faced mounting pressure, especially after his deputy, Angela Rayner, publicly stated she saw "no reason" why Abbott shouldn't stand for the party. Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, echoed this sentiment, agreeing with Rayner.
Speaking in Scotland on Friday, Starmer told reporters, “The whip has obviously been restored to her now and she is free to go forward as a Labour candidate.”
His statement came less than an hour after Abbott’s friends claimed she was certain she wouldn’t be allowed to stand. They noted she hadn’t had discussions with the leadership since a Tuesday briefing to the Times indicated she would be barred. Despite feeling it was a "fait accompli" that some within the leadership would block her, Abbott still hopes to stand as the Labour candidate for the east London seat.
Many within Labour remain upset and angry over the handling of Abbott’s investigation and the uncertainty surrounding her future in the party, despite Starmer's latest remarks.

There was a time, start of this lady's career, black community needed a voice in House of Commons. Wholly agree. However, better is now needed. She should not be elected. She is not fit for purpose. Someone far more intelligent is required. That's said, the electorate must vote, must decide. If she proves to be the choice, that's democracy. It is...... what it is. Rightly is!
I have no time for Ms. Abbot. However, she's an elected representative for her constituency, and they should be the only ones who decide her political future.
Politics should start talking about how to give more decision making power to the electorate perhaps as part of the electorate online community guided of course by real facts around an issue and if needed countermanded by other clear facts.
