In many ways, this reminds me of Marine Corps boot camp in 1965. Many, many similarities, probably the most important of which is that you never, ever quit on anything and that there's nothing that you cannot do. Those lessons became part of my soul and are still there nearly 50 years later.
I remember going through this in the 80's in Alabama. A whole week, slept on a cot in the gym, 90 degees in the gym, three practices a day, 7AM=9AM, 12PM-1:30PM and 4 PM - until with meetings in between. There was no time limit on how long they could have you. You could not leave the school property and were allowed one phone call a day. The meals were horrible and it was miserable. Water breaks were rare and coaches cussed you every minute of the day. On Friday night when it was over I always went and got the biggest cheeseburger and milkshake I could find and was so happy to be home. The bond it created with your teammates was something that you can not describe.
