I installed software on my computer and bought and FTDI cable off eBay. Nothing would work. Computer would not recognize the connection between radio and computer. I installed drivers for the cable. NOTHING would happen. For a week or two I struggled with getting things to work. Then I was at a computer repair shop and there was a box of used FTDI cables. I took a chance and bought one for $0.50. Got home, connected to my computer and radio. Powered up both computer and radio. PRESTO! It worked. A valuable lesson learned. Ya can’t always depend on eBay to get reliable products. The cable I bought would not work at all. Seems as though the Chinese will throw garbage on eBay waiting for unsuspecting folks to buy. I was one of them. Other than this, Bob provided good info getting thing things to work. Thank you Bob!!! My radio works like a champ now!!!
I know this is an old post, but just wanted to thank you for the video instructions. I picked up the TS480SAT a little while ago, ordered the same cable, got it in the mail today and you were right, not a lot of mention on the web, not even in manuals how to set it up. Quite simple when you have someone who knows how to point it out, thanks a bunch, worked flawlessly just as you described.
Outstanding!!!! Thank you, Bob! A tremendous help for me in assisting a fellow ham who is visually impaired, and can not see the screen on the radio. This should help him quite a bit.
Thanks, Bob, for the pleasant low-key introduction to setting up a computer for connecting to a TS-480HX via Kenwood ARCP-480 software. For what it's worth, I am also running Win 10, and connecting my computer to my rig was actually Plug & Play after I installed the ARCP-480 software. I did not have to change anything in my comm port settings or the software communications settings. The software and radio began operating together magically. I was amazed. I am still learning to use the software. A detailed tutorial on the software, and especially on how to use the Audio Editor, would be most welcome. Right now, I am just experimenting. There is almost nothing written about this. The TS-480HX is a great rig though, whether controlled by software or the control head. It's too bad that Kenwood discontinued this model, but I understand that technology must always continue to advance. But I feel certain there will be TS-480 users for a long, long time to come.
Alvin.... Glad everything worked for you. I created that short video as I muddled my way through it’s features. About a year later, I jumped into the Icom 7300 trying to master that rig as well. I still have both radios. Even though the IC 7300 has a bit more flashy features & design, I still love my TS 480. It’s mello in it’s audio receive & factory filtering .......I think, even better than my IC 7300. 73 Bob
THANK YOU!!!!! I just bought a 480 SAT and was hoping to find a way to op remote while traveling without spending $500+ USD for remote hardware that I'm told is quite fiddly. This and the NCS looks like just the thing for me so I can participate in events like Winter FD, etc while visiting family in So. Africa.
Thank you for the video. I and a fried are setting up a remote operating system for TS-480SAT tranceiver. My friend will use the tranceiver front panel and I RRC-Micro PC-Client with a dongle via Internet. So far I have truble with the sound that I hear from the tranceiver - with RF Gain set to MAX, I move the AF Gain from MIN towards MAX when I hear something from the tranceiver it only small peaces of sound and the nothing - maybe 2-3 s intervalls!
Hi Bob....thanks for posting ! I'm looking to buy a 480SAT soon and I'm interested in seeing vids of it in action. Especially the pc interface which you covered so well. 73 DE WI3K
Simple easy to understand instructions. Can you tell me if you have setup your radio for WSJTX-FT8 digital mode and do you need a TNC to interpret the tones?
Bob,Thanks for the video. I couldn't get the program running until I watched your video. Setting to COM1 was the answer to my problem. Any advice about a source for more info on programming? The owner instruction manual is a bit complicated.73 Bill KC1WLJ
Bill Johnson Hello Bill, Glad I could help. There is not a lot of detailed info on what this software can provide us as users. It’s more of a trial & error situation. There is another manual available strictly for what I believe they call the Network Command System for the TS 480. This set-up allows for remote operation of your HF station. Not sure if that is of interest to you. If it is... go to QRZ and send me an email. I will send you the link....Bob VA3TKO

Bob,
Thank you very much. I inherited the 480hx version with no manuals, and didn't know about the software download. This is a big help. AB5XZ
Thanks for answering my questions on the software for the TS-480. Works like a charm.

Arvind Mallya No...sorry....I haven’t gone down that road. For digital I went D-Star & messed around a little with DMR.
Hello. Thanks for the informative video. Was wondering how do you enlarge the program on the screen?
