  • Solo Multi-day Kayak trip on Philpott Lake in Virginia.
This is a beautiful place with lots to see so be sure to take your camera. I didn't get a chance to see everything there is to see on the lake due to bad weather that moved in on the third night.
I would also suggest doing some Google searches or maybe use Google earth to map some spots out you would like to see on the lake.
I camped on deer Island site 21. It is the most remote site more towards the North side of the island away from any other sites. There is no water provided on this site. However some of the other sites on the island do provide water. But take warning, the other sites looked like there where on a steep incline which looked hard to get to especially if you climbing out of a kayak. Looks like any amount of rain would also make each site somewhat of a mud pit.
Campsite 21 is amazing....has both sunny and shaded spots, a small swimming area...and a natural kayak park.
You can not reserve a campsite for deer island online.
So what I did was reserved a spot at the salthouse branch campsite on the "Main land" for the first night. I then spoke with the ranger to reserve a spot on deer island. Ranger told me it was open house and I'd have the whole island to myself for the next few days! If you would rather be alone on the Island, the best time to go is on a weekday before public schools let out for summer vacation.
I tried to limit the amount of water I loaded up on the kayak in fear of becoming a submarine. This would however be a mistake. The boat could have carried alot more weight. I thought the island had trails to each camp-site so I figured I would just walk to another campsite if I run out of water. Not the case...I did run out of water the 3rd night and there are no trails to other campsites. I could have made a trip back to the salthouse branch location to refill my water...or maybe bush-wacked to the other sites on the island...but by this time there where severe storms in the area and I had no desire to become a lightning rod on the water.
So if you choose site 21 on deer island.....just remember to bring enough water.
And another suggestion, Invest in a good sleeping pad, If you have the money buy a super light weight one...if not buy anything but the blue foam ones they sell at your local "whatevermart". I'm still looking around for a good one in my price range that's semi-light weight. REI sells there brand which seems pretty reasonable. The cheap-o blue foam one didn't make for a comfortable sleep. It worked, but so does sleeping on the ground with just a sleeping bag. Thank goodness for all the pine needles I stuffed under the tent.
