    I really enjoy hearing your enthusiasm! Keep up the good work. If you have room for a cattle or hog panel trellis curved over to make a tunnerl (4 ft wide space on each of the 2 sides), the Blue Lake Pole Bean is really prolific, string-less and tasty!

    Another delicious tomato is the Thornburn's Terra-Cotta from Baker Creek. We generally love tomatoes. Last year we grew more than 20 varieties and 152 plants. We have always loved Cherokee Purple Tomatoes and still do. However, Thornburn's Terra-Cotta became our #1 fresh eating sandwich tomato. Last year was our first year growing the Terra-Cotta because a packet costs $5. I had looking at it for a couple of years and finally broke down and bought the seeds. I decided to concentrate on tomatoes last year and pare down which tomatoes we like best for sauce, salsa and fresh eating. Our top picks are Sungold cherry, Cherokee Purple, Thornburn's Terra-Cotta, Black Beauty, Jersey Devil, Orange Strawberry (Botanical Interests) and Giant Paste (Botanical Interests). The largest tomatoes were the Accordion from Baker Creek. We are in E TN zone 7a. I'm looking forward to seeing your harvests! We grow Marigolds, I like the Super Hero Marigolds (Botanical Interests) and French Marigolds with the tomatoes and definitely plant Borage and Basil (my favorite is Lime Basil for tea) with your tomatoes...the best flavor comes forward with those plants in between the tomatoes. Inter-planting those 3 together, they all seem to grow larger with better harvests. And, they're all very useful ingredients!

      @sowinthecity  7 місяців тому

      WOW! I bet your garden is AMAZING!! Thank you for this valuable information!! I will definitely look into the Terra Cotta! It sounds like it tastes amazing! I like how you were able to figure out which tomatoes worked better as sauces, in salsa and eaten fresh! That’s one of my goals this year as well! 😊

    We also grow Nasturtiums with our cucumbers. I love the Mahogany and the Black Velvet for contrast with the Tip Top Alaska. Wasps eat pests-bad garden bugs. For the Butterflies, Bees and Humming Birds grow the Tithonia also known as Mexican Sunflower. They will grow 10-15 feet tall and put on multiple red-orange flowers. They just don't stop putting on new growth and flowers! And yes, we had so many butterflies and shockingly Humming Birds on those flowers every day, all day. So amazing. My gardens will never be without them again. Never! If you grow Tithonia, your pollinators will stay in your gardens throughout your growing seasons.

    I can imagine you planting these seeds and having a beautiful garden. It looks like it will be pretty and healthy. I can see how excited you are. Green beans are fun to grow. Stringing the lines for them to grown on, picking them before they get too big. I left mine go and they were there in Spring still. We cut them open and the beans inside the long green beans were still good and not frozen dead. Radishes come up first. I always planted one row of radishes even though I didn't eat them much. They were hope fruit. You knew all the garden would eventually be full, but seeing those radishes coming up in 2 weeks. That is fun.

    Great haul! I did not know that tomato and basil were companion plants. I've had trouble growing basil but I'll try them together this time. I've purchased seeds from Baker Creek and grew their Paul Robeson tomatoes last year. They germinated and grew well and were really juicy and good, so good job picking those up from MiGardner! You also mentioned purchasing the Tulsi Basil - I think people make tea out of it sometimes. Have you ever gone to the Baker Creek National Heirloom Expo? It's now in Southern California but I used to go when it was in Northern California. Fantastic - you'd love it.

    • @sowinthecity

      Yep! Tomatoes and basil work so well together! I bet Tulsi tea is soo good! I’m so excited about all the herbs I’m growing this year! I would love to go to the Baker Creek conference! I’ve heard great things about it! 😊😊

      @@sowinthecity I think you should definitely try to get there at some point. The vendors and exhibits are so good as well as the speakers and presentations. You could spend all day just listening to the different speakers They really bring in the best in their fields. I did make it to many of the Northern California conferences but haven't yet made it to SoCal

    I love yellow watermelons. Tulsi is just another word for holy basil. There are quite a few types of tulsi/holy basil. Kapoor, Krishna, Amrita, Rama.... Kappor and Krishna are the most popular. I've grown the Black Beauty tomato. They take a long time to ripen. The part most exposed to the sun will be the darkest. Alaska Salmon is one of my favorite nasturtium varieties.

    • @sowinthecity
      @sowinthecity  7 місяців тому +1

      I need to look up those other holy basil varieties! Hopefully I can be patient when waiting for the Black Beauty tomato to ripen lol 😆 how did you like the taste? Was it a really strong flavor?
