2:34-3:07 bare necessities the simple bare necessities Forget about your worries and your strive I mean the bare necessities oh mother nature’s recipes that bring the bare necessities of life
In the books, the elephants were the masters and upholders of the Jungle Law, very wise and powerful, and according to legend, Tha the first of their kind, was the one who brought the jungle into existence... ‘And the Lord of the Jungle was Tha, the First of the Elephants. He drew the Jungle out of deep waters with his trunk; and where he made furrows in the ground with his tusks, there the rivers ran; and where he struck with his foot, there rose ponds of good water; and when he blew through his trunk,-thus,-the trees fell. That was the manner in which the Jungle was made by Tha; and so the tale was told to me.’ -Hathi, How Fear Came
To be fair, that was how many viewed elephants in the past. Same goes for the largest animal in other areas (i.e grizzly bears were seen as supernatural among some North American tribes).
Plus it’s a reflection of how elephants are a keystone species in their habitats, affecting the lives of practically every other animal they coexist with
For a film that has realistic and highly detailed animal design, it's so strange how this movie got their elephants wrong. Asian elephants have arch back, with the highest point at the center. However, elephants in this movie have a dip on their back, which is similar to those of African elephants. The entire herd also comprises of tusked individuals, implying that the females elephants here have tusks, which is also a feature only found in African elephants (it's unlikely that they would suggest that a baby elephant in this film is raised in an all-male bachelor herd).
This is likely deliberate. All the animals are designed to be more prehistoric than modern day - they're all much larger than modern-day versions, with other elements of different subspecies mixed in. Shere Khan has more of a Siberian Tiger look than a Bengal, but he's much larger than either of them. Baloo is nothing like a Sloth Bear, being designed to resemble an extinct species of brown bear instead (though he does state he's a sloth bear). And of course, King Louie is a Gigantopithicus, an extinct ape.
There’s a theory that the Elephants in this movie aren’t regular Asiatic Elephants, but actually a larger extinct species of Elephant known as Palaeoloxodon. Since King Louie in this film was a Gigantopithecus, it’s more than possible.
Hathi is reminding him to show respect, which is a lot different than the original Disney version where Mowgli was a very disrespectful child due to his wants and naivety of the dangers he's in. Here you can see why elephants need to be respected even by predators like Bagheera and Baloo: they're *huge* and powerful, especially as a group. They're not called the creators of the jungle for nothing.
1:28 That sound. That’s the same trumpet sound from a different Elephant from Jumanji. The original 1995 Film. You know, right at the scene where the Stampede was passing Aunt Norah right before a Monkey stowed away in the car.
Brendan Kruger That's EXACTLY what I thought when I saw this on opening night! Considering that paleontologist Asier Larramendi's paper on sizes on extinct proboscideans was published mid-summer 2015 which concluded that Palaeoloxodon namadicus was the largest elephant known, Favreau could have incorporated this into the film while it was still in production. If you look closely, at the time of filming Neel Sethi was 4'8" tall. If you compare the bulls and cow with the calf they're about 16' and 10' tall respectively. Also they have the more concave backs like Palaeoloxodon and the females in the herd have small tusks not tushes. The only thing is that Favreau's elephants showcase the typical Asian Elephant dome. Palaeoloxodon namadicus had a massive muscular parieto-occipital crest which would have looked remarkably different from the double dome structure on Asian Elephants. So therefore, King Louie isn't the only revived prehistoric animal (Gigantopithecus) in this movie.
