Fascinating footage, I first visited in maybe 1993 or 94 and it was still a town, got a blown tyre replaced. Visited two more times since it was shut down.
Thanks, it is a pity there is so little left to see of the town now. I try to get back there as often as Ican and never have enough time when I am there.
Stumbled on this video so thank you this was great to see, visited the town about the same time this video was taken and the Gem Museum was incredible. Sadly it burnt down and like the rest of the town now basically gone. I have travelled through Wittenoom a few times in recent years and as you say, it is all but gone. At the time of writing this reply the last few residents have or about to vacate the location. Such beautiful country with a sad history.
It was really just a matter of time before the last residents were forced out. The government's part in the destruction of this town has been nothing but shameful.
Its great you were able to save these and digitise them. I bet there isn't a lot of analog film that is still viewable from back before then. Analog video doesn't last that long. I spent 1 whole month digitising the whole family archive of analog fils. took a lot of work, but worth it.
I just kick myself that I didn't take more footage, most of the town was intact back then and there was more at the end of the gorge that I didn't shoot. There was some kind of workers camp that was still in use. Hard to belive people were living with the asbestos slag heaps almost on top of them.
My great grand parents used to own the old pub, they moved to Broome and earlier this year passed away. I alwaysed enjoyed hearing the stories they told about whittenoom and I hope to visit one day.
Thanks for the upload. Incredible valuable footage. Loved the crystal shop scene, I wondered what it would have been like inside there. Appreciate the upload. Wish you also had one with raw sound :)
Video was UA-cam recommended to me thanks for the upload very interesting ! I believe wittenopm should have been left as,a ghost town for people to explore ! Despite risks adults can make their own decisions of what places to visit !
My dad used to fixed telephones in the houses with the asbestos exposure minerals and telephone tower in the hills of the old mines of wittenoom blue asbestos mining town
Great video, thanks for uploading it. There is not much footage of Wittenoom taken back in the 80s/90s, so this is really valuable. Can you tell me who plays the song in the first five minutes? I really like it! Thanks again.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The track at the start is Don't Look by Silent Partner. It is available copyright free on the UA-cam studio. @@danozism
Lovely Place went there a few times. My Brother worked there for a year back in the 90's. He has just been diagnosed with asbestosis and only a few years left robbed him of seeing his grand kids growing up. Lovely town though..
I wrote about the town some time ago in a bush ballad and referred to it as 'deadly paradise'. Comes pretty close I think. So many have suffered because of the greed of business and the indifference of government.
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I was trying to find out what music was used but I haven't been able to find what it was. This is a very old clip and we weren't keeping much in the way of records back then.
Sorry I don't know, we didn't have a lot of time to film and we always thought we would go back and film it properly but by the time we got there half the town had gone. Now it is all gone.
Asbestosis probably got blown outta the ground with all the Nuclear bombs tests done by the British Government back in the day when Rob Menzies sucked up to them and said, "sure, come and blow ya bombs here in Australia" :)
We stayed there on two occasions, the first time when the caravan park was still open and then much later when most of the town had been demolished. A really beautiful place that was ruined and is gradually being locked away so that nobody will go there due to the asbestos risks.

I just wish I had taken more footage when I first went there. On later visits most of the buildings had gone.
You mean the building was torn down by people?
@@Phan-Xu Not just that building, the whole town has gradually been demolished by the state government because they don't want people going there.
Great footage. Lived in Hedland for 14 years until two years back. The many Wittenoom billabongs was a favourite camping spot and will always be.

@@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen Yes so true. As if erasing history and Wittenoom off the map rights the wrongs of the past.
Amazing what 25 years of nature has done to that road into the gorge. We were there a few months back and much of the bitumen is gone
Yes it was bad enough when we called in a few years back. Soon it will be almost impassable.

Does anyone know if the old power station still exist ? or any other plant or equipment ?
I think it was mostly removed but not sure how much of it was carted away and how much just left to rot.

Por que cambiaste el audio que tenia este vídeo ?
So with the rock and mineral collection is that just a local collection or is it from a wider area?
It was from many different places, not just the Wittenoom area.

Probably worse still, it was used in brake pads in cars and has been spread everywhere.
