Mark! You absolutely just saved my life! I’m new to learning how to play the guitar and I have been struggling with the C-chord - I mean REALLY struggling! I tried your advice on bringing my thumb up to the top of the neck, rather than down lower, and it absolutely solved my problem! I’m so grateful to you - keep the lessons coming for guys like me!
He’s back again YEEEY 😄, another important lesson thanks Mark. But again Mark I’ve been waiting for a strumming dynamics and patterns lesson. I’m gonna shout it again STRUMMING DYNAMICS and PATTERNS!!!!!!!!!!! Lol Cheers mate !
Great lesson (or as Mark may say, ‘lissin’ ;-)). Interesting how nobody else has covered this in so much detail, it’s critical. Another reason why classical guitarists don’t wrap their thumb this way is because the classical neck is like 50% thicker. Most thumbs simply can’t manage that!
Cheers for your backup Fam... I’ve had so many people (even in person) day they’ve changed their thumb position as a result of this video and it’s transformed and improved their playing!!... thanks fir ‘lissin’ing
Cheers man.. you’re a loyal regular post maker and I appreciate it... also I love that megadeth album! I heard Peace Sells ... and was totally sold!!... mullet was humming in those days
@@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel bahahaha you and me both mate. I had a filthy mullet too. Good times listening to Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura and Megadeth back in the day. I'm lovin it all over again now too. Cheers for the kind words🤘
Thanks for this Mark. Not bad for an Aussie, upside down too 😎 I'm just coming back to the guitar after a 40yr break, so this is really helpful. I'm an advanced motorcyclists, and the key to that is world class basics. With the guitar I'm trying to avoid 'tips', and work out what the essential fundamentals are. I think your film covers one of these. Maybe you could do something on the other 'essentials'?
Fabulous lesson Mark. I do fret chords with my thumb over the neck but I have problems muting the high E on upstroke. Downstrokes are fine but upstroke are a problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks for this video, I am learning to play and do get a sore thumb. I'm not sure if I am holding the neck incorrectly or if it is age-related arthritis.
Hey Mark, When we press the fingertips on the strings, where does the strength come from? Does it come from pushing the thumb and fingers on the neck or from pulling our arm backwards or both?
I have no issues playing the 4 string F chord in the open position with my index finger barring the E & B strings, but when I slide that chord up to the 5th fret to play the A (or anywhere higher up the neck) I struggle. My thumb is on the back of the neck pointing towards the head stock and my elbow has to really move in an unnatural position. I see other people playing it naturally but can't see what they are doing with their thumb.
Thumb positioning I don’t really have a problem. It’s with my other four fingers I have an issue with. How do I keep my other four fingers from touching the other strings. I keep getting string buzz when playing basic chords. Can you help?
Pretty standard issue right Damien? Don’t get caught up on the strings that aren’t ringing... push through and develop those calluses with chords...repeat and repeat!!! Those dull & buzzy strings will slowly sort themselves
Thanks Mark. I appreciate you taking the time to teach us. An thank you for putting out these videos for those of us who are struggling and are sort of lost.

I was literally just looking at my thumb position this morning, then this video pops up! awesome coincidence, great info Mark :)
I sensed your dilemma and quickly threw this video together for you 😂 ... hope it helped mate

Perfect!! I’m stealing that line ‘world class basics’ so good
@@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel youre welcome. I stole it from an RAF F35 pilot i trained a few months back !

Yes I know what you mean. I try to stay away from the bass strings when I’m doing my art strokes in general… See if that helps

I always get a sore left shoulder in the muscle at the back. Any recommendations
All chords? Or is it only when playing barre chords? ....could be 1. The thumb 2. Your sitting position 3. The guitar position. Let me know Valerie
All chords with ukuele. Seem ok playing the baritone. Think it might be my posture
