Soulsand makes you float, magma block pulls you down. Piston swaps the two. Observers send the signal down. Chests’ hitboxes allow you to touch the water.
Also pretty sure you don’t actually need a minecart but it looks cooler

Instead of using a observer chain to send signal down, you can use a trapdoor and wall block, and have a observer at the top and bottom to detect the change instead for a more material efficient build.

while agree with you i would say that early on a playthrough yes, you can do that but neither quartz nor redstone is rare enough to justify that. a wall/trapdoor requires way more space, and clearance which can be a limitation

You could have subtituted the observer line for a redstone torch line downwards to make it cheaper

it's slower and causes more lag, and uses the same amount of redstone. observers only require extra quartz which you can have plentiful rather quickly.

You could conserve observers by making it an obseever activating a piston that extends downward to activate another observer then you can make it more conserverd by doing this
[Redstone]
[Block]
[Piston]-(downwards)
[Air]
[Observer]
[Redstone]
[Block]
[Piston]- (downeards)
Then just repeat that to desireed height

took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to realize ppl in the comments saying use a "wall block" didn't mean normal blocks used as walls. Anyway i tested it and it doesn't work, at least in java 1.21, because the trapdoor only changes the WALL next to it, but not the others. Screenshots I've seen where it works are dated 5 years ago, so it was probably a bug that's been patched out.

How is that supposed to transmit the redstone signal down? I would have said use a sticky piston and honey.

@@kisatorimuru6627 when a wall has no blocks next to it, it's only a post, and when the trap door gets a signal, it flips and connects to the wall, making the all the wall under it change shape, which can be detected by a singular observer.
By doing so, you only need to connect the top 2 button to the trap door, which means you will only need 1 observer.
On top of that, every observer takes 2 game ticks to update the Redstone signal when placed so, using this much observer would cost a lot of time, making it slow when you build it higher, doing this wall trick makes it so it's faster too

If you want to make it cheaper, put a door under the block which has redstone on it, then observe the door from below, a bloc, a redstone powder, a block, a door etc.
It will make a little bit of door noise but it is way cheaper.
Else, you can use walls to transfert the signal down and scafoldings to transfert it up using one observer and one trapdoor for each.
