I was just looking over your other foot creams on your blog yesterday and you make a foot butter today! Must be fate. I love your little hand towel too!
Marie, I think there is a mistype with peppermint essential oil mass. In the formulation description it says 0.38g, I think it should be 1.38g, as that would come to 2.75%. Sorry😬

Hello Marie. Love each one of your videos and quirky personality. I agree with Charles Ward about a different book on lotions, and oils. I think it would be amazing. I already bought your book on makeup even though I don't wear makeup. I love the lip balms and I was going to make the lipsticks until you mentioned that your book lipstick mix did not work well with the TKB mold. Now I am not sure what to do. I bought the mold and I am not sure how to do the lipsticks.

Thanks so much for buying my first book-the better that one sells, the higher the chance of a second :D For the lipstick mold, check out all the videos I've done on it-one using TKB's base, and one on how to make your own ;)
hi. I was excited to try this recipe. I used exactly what’s written (except for EO) but my mixture didn’t solidify after 24 hours haha it is still liquid. Do you know where i went wrong?
Another great video!! So much information and I can't wait to make it. I have a question, why stirring all ingredients to reach a light trace, and if using a larger quantity recipe, could you use an immersion blender to help speed up the trace process?
I suppose you could, but this trace isn't like soap trace-we are basically just trying to keep it moving until it cools sufficiently, and I don't think an immersion blender will really help it cool any faster than stirring by hand.
Hi Marie, I did this recipe but it didn't set up well. The result was kind of an extremely soft product (almost liquid). I had to melt it again and add 8g of beeswax to make it firmer. Any guess on why this happened? On the other hand, I also made your Soothing Cedarwood Ointment, which has a similar technique (the ice bath) and it turned out well, actually much harder than I expected. But the difference is that the SC Ointment has cetyl alcohol and beewax in it but this foot butter doesn't, so I don't know how it would set up so well without any thickener in order to be so firm as yours. I did mixed it constantly, but I'm not sure if I reached "trace". Do you think the quality of the shea butter may have played a role in the final product? I used refined, but I'm not sure if it is a really good quality butter. This is all I can think of trying to give a explanation why it didn't set up. Thanx!!!
Oooo....let's talk about that towel. Where you do find that amazing-ness beauty? Love it! Hope your move is going well. Can't wait to make this recipe for gifting to my dad with his dragon feet thing that he's had going on since the 80's. lol. I think he's tried everything commercially available, but think the butters might really help.
The towel was a Christmas gift from a good friend 😄 There's a pink one, too! The move is coming along... I'm currently looking for a kitchen/dining table. I'm rapidly running out of space so I'm hoping to find a triangular one that I can push up against the wall 90% of the time but pull out for some extra seating if required. They're proving difficult to find, though 🤔 I've seen a few but they seem to go quickly on second hand websites. At least a dining table isn't a make-or-break thing, so I can eat on the sofa until I find one :P

Thank you! My challenge with a skin care book is the MASSIVE potential ingredient shopping list. Most of the variation in cosmetics is in colour and consistency, so I was able to keep the shopping list for Make it Up pretty short. For skin care... woooo... there are SO many potential ingredients! Extracts, emulsifiers, oils, butters, vitamins, hydrolyzed proteins, actives, hydrosols, essential oils... it would either have to be a very focussed book (just lotions, that sort of thing) or a fairly simple broad strokes thing 🤔
Ugh, I know all about the siren songs of the ingredient list. I just bought e-wax, polysorbate 80, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, and germall just so I could make your Forest Cleansing Balm and Ginger and Oakmoss Cleansing Stick (the oakmoss is still whispering to me from my online shopping cart). I am an essential oil nut and would also love to see a book that focuses on just essential oils blends that can be used in perfumes/colognes/diffusers and a section for therapeutic blends that can be used in roller bottles or balms. Just a thought!
I made this today for the very first time using mango, shea and grapeseed oil.I followed the instructions exactly as written. First of all, I never saw this trace thing and by the time I tried to pour it in my tin, it was too thick and would not pour! I remelted it, put it back in the ice bath, never saw the trace thing again but it was pourable and appeared to set up nicely! That was six hours ago and it still has not hardened! I don't know what to do! Should I put it in the fridge? Please reply!
Since you didn't notice a lighter trace, my first guess is that it probably happened really quickly? This could be because you were using a vessel that cooled faster than the heavy glass measuring cup I was using; perhaps thinner glass, or metal or plastic? Ambient temperature will also be a factor: if you live somewhere significantly warmer than I do, that'll make the butter softer-possibly too soft. It'll depend. Think about how soft butter is at "room temperature" in the summer vs in the winter; like that. You can try putting it in the fridge, but I'd encourage you to try trace again, seeing if you can slow things down (less ice in the ice bath can help with that as well) and keeping an eye out for all the changes that will happen as the butter cools. This technique does take a bit of time to master, but is truly worth it ❤️
I tried your recipe and turns out awesome..the only thing it melts when i left in hot place..im thinking of adding any emulsifier wax..do you have any recommendations?? If yes ..how many percent would it be?? Thank you

Jebisha Pearl well peppermint and eucalyptus oils DO have an effect. They’re both oils that contain menthol which has a cooling effect on the skin, and they both have proven anti bacterial properties. Lovely in a foot butter. In addition, those two oils have a lovely fresh fragrance when combined. Humblebee & Me hello, it's me again. I kept it in freezer for an hour then in my room which usually has the A/C on. It maintained its translucent body for few days before it became an opaque!!. I'm in love with it, so soft and creamy without being very greasy😍. And it work best when I have my hands wet. Oh yes, I use it formy hands😉. Thanks Ann💓
Hi ,I tried it.Instead of corn starch I used corn flour. It remained liquid even after one night.I didn't understand why?what is the heat phase and cool phase time?
Hi there, your video is really amazing! Just one doubt, I live in a very hot place ( 35 degree Celsius), should I go with the same recipe or do any modification? Do suggest.
I understand the heating and then somewhat rapid cooling is tempering the shea butter so it is not grainy, but is the "trace" phase when it is thick enough that the starch stays suspended but it is still warm enough to pour into the container?
I read your blog and it's very informative, thank you for it. I'd like to tweak it a bit just to kind of make it my own. I did try it with all shea butter and it is very greasy, still lovely though. I'm wondering if coconut oil (solid at room temp) would be an ok substitution for the mango butter. Also, what if we wanted to leave the essential oils out completely. Would we just increase the butter portion since the essential oils are part of the overall percentage in recipe?
Hey! Please don't use coconut oil for mango butter-in a product like this that will lead to total recipe failure-you'll have a soft, gloppy mess. You can learn more about that in this video (keeping in mind the similarities and differences between mango and shea): ua-cam.com/video/wGK4mkLRXNM/v-deo.html. If you want to eliminate the EOs you would replace them with more safflower oil-liquid for liquid.
I have tried to make this twice today and it's not solidifying. I even painstakingly measured to make sure I'm not crazy and added less EO in case that was the issue. I'm using mango butter, refined shea butter, and apricot kernal oil. Is one of those the cause? I really want this to work hahaha I could try kokum butter, cocoa butter, or straight mango butter. I can use just about any other light carrier oil too. Just not sure what's causing it.
Hi! There are two possibilities. The first is that you live somewhere much hotter than I do, so it's melting on you. Is your home above 26°C or so? The second is that you aren't bringing the mixture to a thick enough trace before pouring. I'd try re-melting and re-tracing first as it's the easier option. @@HumblebeeAndMe I was finally able to get it to work when I stopped using apricot kernel oil and used sweet almond oil lol. I was wondering if it would be possible to add magnesium oil to this? I am OBSESSED with the consistency and don't want to lose that, but I would also love to add magnesium to the balm for my feet. Thank you again! ♥
Did you use coconut oil instead of the solid butters? If so, it's not setting because you used coconut oil-the butters I used in the recipe melt around 37°C, coconut oil melts at 24°C.
@@HumblebeeAndMe Yes used coconut oil instead of safflower oil and the resulting mixture wasn't setting. Then I put it in the refrigerator overnight. The next morning I gave it a good whisk. And voila! Its got great consistency and it looks and feels great! :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe DIY recipes are very good for body butters, lotions and soaps. However, I notice that DIY foot butter / foot balm doesn't repair cracked heels. It only moisturizes / seals moisturizer at the most. I find The Body Shop peppermint butter to be very good in this respect - it not only moisturizes, but say if you apply it in the night, the next morning you can feel a visible difference - feet are extremely soft. Can you try making something similar for feet - I guess it will be a lotion with a higher water percentage. Will be great if you can try to make something similar. Thanks a ton!
Hello there! I’m a new subscriber to your diy videos! Have you heard of using barium sulfate for chemical hair removal? I’ve seen some people mix it with plain glycerine soap for hair irritation free hair removal? I’d like to see if you can try it and make it work.
Hey! Chemical hair removal is something I stay far away from-I don't know nearly enough about it to feel I could do it safely and I would hate for somebody to hurt themselves doing something I advised them to try.
Hi, sorry to bother but could you suggest a recipe for a foot lotion/butter/balm to help ease and heal cracked heels/split skin on the balls of feet, i'm suffering from several splits right now and could really use something to aid healing and ease the soreness
Ouch! If the skin is broken, especially deeply, I'm hesitant to recommend DIYs as I'm concerned about infection. My palm balm is good for minor abrasions (www.humblebeeandme.com/palm-balm-for-rock-climbers-boo-boos/) and I know many people swear by my Rocky Mountain Foot Butter (www.humblebeeandme.com/rocky-mountain-foot-butter/) for bruises and sore muscles.
Humblebee & Me I completely understand, I hadn't even looked into the cost of it 🤦 I have seen some on eBay for much less, notably from a company called Naturra, I'm guessing these are probably too good to be true?
You shouldn't; are you certain you chilled it long enough in the water bath? I found that if you didn't reach the critical point in the water bath it would stay rather sad and soupy :(
This looks wonderful! Do you recommend putting this on your feet at night before going to bed to let it sink in?

Can you trade out vit E for glycerin
No; glycerin is water soluble.
i just randomly wounded up here but great job at presentation, i watched all the way through! probably smells hummy😭
Thanks for watching!
What is this particular foot butter good for?
For applying to dry feet :)
Can I use this as an alternative to Vick’s ?
I doubt you'd find it minty enough to work as an alternative.
Can this be whipped?
Please watch my Body Butter Q&A video from July ❤️
Hey! Would you recommend the formula botanica course if someone is serious about cosmetic making?
Yes, I'm really enjoying it! I especially appreciate how they cover how to safely sell-I haven't gotten there yet but I've peeked ahead :)
Could you formulate a balm with blue tansy inspired by May Lindstrom's Blue Cocoon?
5mL of Blue Tansy EO is nearly $50. Not only do I not want to spend that, but I imagine most of my readers/viewers won't, either. Sorry!
Humblebee & Me I completely understand, I hadn't even looked into the cost of it 🤦 I have seen some on eBay for much less, notably from a company called Naturra, I'm guessing these are probably too good to be true?
My product did not harden at all what did I do wrong eekk
Cheana Winter sadly same for me. It stays as liquid even after 24 hours.
I tried half this with the arrowroot substitution and it won't set. Do you need more arrowroot?
You shouldn't; are you certain you chilled it long enough in the water bath? I found that if you didn't reach the critical point in the water bath it would stay rather sad and soupy :(
Humblebee & Me I am pretty sure..it had thickened more that yours for sure.. I'll try less liquid oil next time I guess.
Hmm. Do you live somewhere warm?
Humblebee & Me Not particularly, especially not now. PEI, Canada. It is more humid.
The same thing happened with mine but I used all arrowroot instead of cornstarch! So maybe the problem is with the arrowroot. 😢
so great
thank so much for this video! I love this!
