Unbelievable early footage of Makoto Ozone! His musicianship is evident as he grooves and lays a killer latin montuno. Oh by the way, the other stars in the band aren't bad either!! Thanks Gary for teaching and bringing Makoto to the forefront of jazz. Thanks to groovinsaxman for posting this video.
This song is like the musical version of the Aristocrats joke. You can play it plain vanilla like most musicians, or you can find the most perverse corners of the chordal interpretation and let your improvisational genius run wild and play to the atonalities that the chords implied.. Makoto Ozone was a master of figuring out the atonal corners of this supremely complex chordal structure.
Fantastic upload for archive purposes. So good to see the basis for so many good albums that were to come! Who would have thought that at that time!. Thanks for uploading!
I love the song, too, we both signified on Norma Winstone’s vocal lyric version; however Gary is not playing marimba, he is reknowned as a supreme virtuoso of the vibraphone!
Makoto Ozone, more than any other musician, understood the dichotomy between the lyricism and twisted, atonal nature of the chord changes of this song. He could ride the edge between the two with an artistry that I’ve never seen anyone else match.
From the very first notes, all I could think of was "radical lyricism". This is easily the best jazz piano solo I've ever heard, and the fact that it came from a lad of barely 20 who grew up in a country where jazz is an import, it's particularly impressive. Simply breathtaking. I wish there were more stuff like this of his on UA-cam.
Makoto Ozono here delivered what may be the best jazz piano solo in the history of music.

Posibly the best version ever

Yes. I cried. In it is spirit of a jazz.
this put a smile on my face, so good :)
Makato Ozone ... underrated severely.
An incredible performance, it completely blows away the album version.
I absolutely love that song. And that marimba is my soft spot, incredible performance!!! Yupiii :-)

ZEEV BEN YEHIEL My only regret is that I couldn’t give you more likes. You totally got it, and that is so rare.
this is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FANTASTICO!!!!!!!
Great stuff. They performed this somewhere else, maybe at a later date and it was even better but seems to have been taken down under copyright.
Gary and Makoto look so young! Looks like they swing harder!!
good old times
The best!
uuum 凄い!
😀🌸💙🍀
What a wonderful solo by Makoto....
Is the drummer Dave Weckl?
Answer after 10 years: the Drummer is Not Weckl but bill Hyman...😁😁😁
good job stayin in rhythm with an entire crowd of people clapping off beat lol
Lol. Could just be the usual sonic delay at big outdoor shows with a long distance b/w the speakers and the crowd.
Ha, the true test of musicianship!

What is a song name~~~????
Ladies in Mercedes
Poor Makoto! Old man Gary didn't let him play... :) Pathetic.
Great playing...piano is woefully out of tune, as usual in an outdoor venue. It must have been hot that day!
How sad to see _Budweiser_ sponsoring this august festival! I would like to think most jazz fans have better taste than that...
Great tune (except of the mediocre, 2nd class piano improvisation).
