I'm a beginner violinist. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge; I'm finding these instructional videos to be invaluable! Your playing is an inspiration. Cheers!
Great trills Kerson. For the reference of other viewers (who seem interested in the speed you are reaching) I checked and you're hitting about 9 iterations per second here. I think it's kinda useful to know this, firstly for the purposes of constructing exercises, but secondly because trills can sound slower to the performer than the audience and it's good to know that you don't need to reach this speed to get the right effect. Somewhere between 6-8 per second is a "good trill". Slower than 6 and you lose the effect, 8 already sounds very fast, and in fact any more than 8 tends to be unmusical/jarring in practice. Of course, you might want to reach 9 in the practice room to give yourself some "headroom".
I'm a bassist who was just shown devils trill sonata. You're amazing and technical proficiency is impressive. Thanks for the explanation on the physical aspect !
OMG thank you!!! It helps so much! Already after your explanation of last time, when I asked you, it sounded much better. It’s great that you share your knowledge with other people, musiciens,... thank you!
We were all expecting this!! And also, the mind state of not thinking about it per sei is a very effective way of letting the results of hard ang long time practice show!! Thank you for this, it's been very helpful actually!
Please do a video on vibrato! Have always been amazed by the various colors and expressions you produce via vibrato. How do you practice arm, wrist, and finger vibrato? Your videos are very much appreciated! Thank you!
Much appreciated! This seems based on Dounis' "Fundamental Trills Studies". They certainly seem effective; you probably has the best trills I have ever heard(and I thought no one could beat Josef Hassids trills!) Would you consider doing a layout of your basic practice routine? Best wishes
Searched this up after listening to a ramblers life by the dreadnoughts, all the covers I found didn't play the trills, thanks for clearing up how trills work on this instrument!
Kerson, thank you for this one! Could you perhaps share some ideas about the mental preparation you have briefly mentioned here? How to overcome the typical brain overload which tends to come in the moments when fear comes down upon a person on stage etc. Thank you for your sharing your knowledge!!!
The whole thing is epic, but of course I play 3:31 over and over and over again. On here obviously. My viola wouldn't be able to make that incredible shimmering sound! Heheh.
But you can imagine and find what your viola is capable of, especially with your own taste and interest. A lot of interesting and beautiful sounds are possible
He has the best trill I've ever heard.
