  • "A Little Bit of Soap", written by Bert Berns (aka Bert Russell), was a song,
first sung in a bluesy soul style by the Jarmels, who reached number 12
with it in September 1961 and number 7 on the R&B charts. The song
has been covered by many other artists.
In 1963, Cliff Foenander joined the Hong Kong based group The Fabulous
Echoes and they built a solid fan base in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Ceylon (aka Sri Lanka) Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan. The Fabulous Echoes gained international exposure playing in Las Vegas in the United States of America, also performing with rat pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, with Ella Fitzgerald and the great "Satchmo", Louis Armstrong.
The Fabulous Echoes performed this song on The Ed Sullivan Show after Ed saw them in action in the Thunderbird Lounge.
Since I started performing in Australia, at every gig I did, I dedicated a set to the music and musicians of Sri Lanka who inspired me as a youngster in Colombo, the likes of Cliff Foenander, Desmond Kelly, Bill Forbes and The Jetliners.
Together with several of my musician friends from around the globe, we recorded four tracks of Cliff Foenander, which we sincerely hope, you will enjoy hearing again. This upload is the first, I will follow up with Butterfly In The Rain, Mashed Potato and Remember Me
Thank you for listening and poignantly, one of the songs we recorded was
Cliff's track, "Remember Me" of course Cliff, we will always remember you
as long as there is music being played anywhere!
Cliff and the Fabulous Echoes released a number of records in Asia, recording with the Hong Kong-based Diamond Records.
Their version of "A Little Bit of Soap" was No. 1 for 32 weeks on the Hong Kong charts, as well as being a huge hit in Sri Lanka. That started a string of hits, and they had a double hit with "Dancing on the Moon" and "Sunshine" (a ballad written by Diamond Music co-director Frances da Silva-Kirk and Vic Cristobal who was at one time their keyboard player).
    Vocals: Gehan Gunasekera
