On April 1st, 2018 BAND-MAID announced on their social media that they were changing their focus and would be re-branding as "BAND-MAIKO". Then they released this video. Miku's shodō (calligraphy) at the beginning was "World Domination". At the end of the day they stated they had changed their minds, and would be reverting back to "BAND-MAID". : ) One cool thing is that they changed the dialect of their singing to "Kansai". That's the traditional dialect used in the old Capital of Kyoto and is identified with Geisha culture. A lot of traditional drinking games in the video. : ) BTW, a maiko is an apprentice geiko (geisha) in Kyoto and Western Japan. You'll probably like 'Gion-cho'. It's a new song in "Maiko" style, and is the featured single on the latest mini-album that contains Maiko versions of BAND-MAID songs. That was this years April 1st surprise. Not only the return of the "rival band" BAND-MAIKO, but a whole mini-album.

April Fools Day has become their day to wander down some experimental, more traditional Japanese paths, musically and visually. Secret Maiko Lips was the first time they did it, in 2018. If you thought this was interesting and beautiful, try this year’s Gion cho! Gion is a town in Kyoto (cho means town) and Kyoto is the former capital city of Japan. This year on Aprils fool day they released a new song Gion-cho and together with secret maiko lips they also did five of their other songs in this style and released and EP. In this version, the lyrics was changed to the dialect of Kyoto. Kyoto-ward is very elegant and mismatched with hard rock, The lyrics are humorous for people who understand Japanese.

As to whether the character they play is all an act or not, I don't really know. If you are interested there is a popular Japanese band called Wagakki Band. They combine traditional instruments with modern instruments on every song they perform. I think that their official videos are fairly likely to get blocked but this song, Senbonzakura': ua-cam.com/video/K_xTet06SUo/v-deo.html is a good introduction. Like Band Maid, the live performances are way better than the music videos.
