Good communication development begins in infancy and is more than just learning to talk. It is rooted in social interaction during everyday activities with caregivers. Social communication is essential for children to connect with parents, learn language and play, excel in school, and prevent behavior problems. By observing early gestures, caregivers can obtain a snapshot of a child's communication development, as small lags in milestones can impact future learning. Research shows that by 16 months, children should have at least 16 gestures, which predicts language ability two years later and is essential for academic success.
Learning sign language and gestures can be so helpful for decreasing frustration for babies and toddlers, because they give your child a way to communicate with their hands, when their mouth isn't able to say things yet.
Gestures and sign language can actually support speech development.
