For the question about playing a disliked character, I think it definitely does affect the mental, at least a little bit. If you lose, you lose, but if you win, you get people blaming your character instead of your own skill. It happens in every game too, not just Smash.
It's like that in every sport with spectators. If you aren't even slightly enjoyable to watch even if people recognize you have skill they still won't like you. Kinda like why people dont like watching mayweather boxing. Yes he's objectively doing everything right but like its boring as sin.
@@illford Hbox and didnt mind it? you probably never saw that Scar video talking shit to him and jiggs...while commentating a finals (i think it was finals)
I think one thing which was missed on Jake's tilt is that he is VERY open with how much he doesn't like ROB, especially on twitter. It is pretty common for him to fall to notable ROBs in offline brackets which includes: Zomba, Gabe, WaDi, BigBoss, Grayson, Steven, and Machu (taken directly from a tweet he made).
WaDi is so good at the mental game. And Jake is a newer to the high level competitive scene and rose to the top through online tournaments which is maybe why he is so rattled in person: very little high level in person tourney experience
Jake is carried by Steve is what it looks like it boils down to. Hard to keep cool when youre used to your free lagless options working 90% of the time.
Tbh, if you want to play a generally disliked character, mentality is what makes you a top player, I was watching Kongo Saga vods today and in MkLeo vs Tea, I believe it was TK, he said something like “if people are annoyed at you doing well, and your character winning, don’t take it as hate or personally, see it as you doing something right” and that’s how ultimate is, you need to play to your characters capabilities. As a top player for your disliked character, you need to understand that you will get hate for doing good, and people will say it’s not you, and you need to understand that you did something right. Ultimate is a game where you can’t just pick up a character and instantly be good, you really need to learn your character and their strengths.
Jake and Steve kinda reminds me of HungryBox and Jigglypuff. Although the characters are extremely different in terms of gameplay, the meta, and 2 different games they have one common factor: They are each disliked for the way and how they are supposed to be played. HungryBox in Melee received a lot of hate simply for going Jigglypuff and winning because people hate Puff’s defensive play style. Jake in Ultimate is starting to receive hate because Steve’s design makes him frustrating to fight. Just a thought tho.

WaDi beat Jake and Zomba beat Yonni at the same tournament, both 3-0. After watching it live, I couldn't help but wonder if ROB is a good character against Steve. Or maybe WaDi and Zomba just played the matchup extremely well.
I actually switched over to watch this Wadi set right after watching the Zomba set! I think you're right about ROB being a good counter. His nair to take care of block walls combined with the gyro and laser seem to do pretty well.
And he's not mindlessly running into Steve so he can uptilt or jab back. See my other comment, but I think people are too afraid to camp Steve back. His blocks and cart don't do damage half screen.
I think how people feel about your character CAN impact your performance. But it's all about dealing with character hate and sometimes shit is gonna be how it's gonna be and theres nothing you can do but play lame and win games.
I get the feeling he doesn't look at his opponent much. There were a lot of times where Wadi floats a gyro over Jake's block wall and I'm like, "if he was watching Wadi he wouldn't have gotten hit by that."
As a Steve main, I don’t really get tilted by most of the comments. I know my character is obnoxious to play against and has very high strengths. I even acknowledge that he’s probably one of the characters that can carry the best currently with how little knowledge there is in terms of counterplay. I honestly get more tilted after the set when they essentially boil their loss down to “dumb character” rather than “I lost to that person.” I wanna see the community grow but they seem to crumble at times, which makes me sad. When you boil down someone’s achievements to their character, you invalidate all the time, effort, and skill that the player put into that character to get them where they are, which can be tricky to deal with. Thankfully I’m pretty laid back, and if someone does get salty I just laugh at them. My playstyle is pretty similar to Jake’s actually, but our mentals are completely different, and I hope he can move past it.

Tbh I’ve fought enough Steve dittos in online tournaments to agree that he’s probably the most obnoxious character to fight against, but that’s not stopping me from playing him 😈
Okay but the frustration comes from the fact that the Steve player has to put in a lot less effort and time to get the same results in bracket. So while yes, you may win, it's not the same achievement as winning a tournament with Corin/Roy/cloud. You didn't win because you're the best smash player there. You won because you can abuse the most jankiest character better than other people can. How can it be considered the same achievement when Steve literally isn't playing the same game you are. The same could be said with Snake, but the difference is Snake is fucking hard. Steve is braindead.
It's not that difficult to explain character hate. In traditional sports, the rules and game are consistent across the board, and you either love it for what it is or you don't. If you hate a given sport, you just don't watch or play it. Easy peasy. Smash isn't so simple. With the variety of character styles, Smash is essentially many mini-games within a game (e.g. Steve is his own mini-game, Min-min is her own mini-game, etc). With so many games-within-the-game, it's impossible for everyone to enjoy every one of those mini-games. Traditional sports actually *do* have mini-games, just far less of them. For example, in Soccer the "shootout" is a mini-game. In basketball, purposefully fouling the other team when you're running out of time is a mini-game. You'll find that, just like with smash, when sports fans complain, they tend to spend most of their time complaining about their favorite sports' mini-games. When sports fans complain enough, or it's clear the spirit of the game is being violated, the sport will change its rules. For example, baseball had to make a rule that you aren't allowed to throw a "fake ball" to trick a runner into stepping off of a base so that you can then tag them with the real ball. Rule changes like this are actually pretty common in professional sports. The NFL, the most popular sport in the US, has proposed rule changes every single year in order to improve the game and the viewer experience. IMHO, Smash should take the same approach as traditional sports. The Smash community needs an organization that can decide what the core "principles of the game" are (e.g. the game is fun to play, fun to watch, that matches are won via skill rather than gimmicks, etc), and then determine what that looks like on a practical level (e.g. rules that disallow certain techniques or characters because they detract from agreed upon core principles of the community). Furthermore, just like sports have 1 season per year, Smash essentially has 1 season per year as well. Rule changes should only take effect at the start of a season; never midway through (and of course, would be announced in the offseason). Therefore, if, for example, a character or technique becomes disallowed, players have plenty of time to prepare with that in mind before the start of the next season.
I believe that people playing a disliked or broken character does effect mentality (I specify both because there’s characters like Aegis who are widely played but still disliked). The fact that your character is disliked or broken means that when you win, people say it’s because of the character. I’m a Joker player who has invested a lot of time into him, and when I do well, and do hard to pull off combos, people say I’m carried by a top tier and win because of arsene. A good example is Sonix, people hate Sonic, he’s probably the second or third most hated character in ultimate, but after winning CEO, people had nothing but respect for Sonix and how he played, because he made an incredible losers run and put on one of the best sets in Ultimate post lock down against Riddles, his gameplay was seen as optimal and focused instead of campy and annoying.
Out of a few Steve players, Jake really looks like he's trying to play a one-player game to the point where it seems like he's not even looking at the rest of the game with how many times he gets hit by incoming projectiles
Genuinely feel bad for all the top Steves! -Steve is NOT an easy character so it sucks to get it blamed on the character and people wanting to ban the character -Whenever they win, they complain like before and say Steve should be banned -Whenever they lose, they blame it on the fact that Steve is "easy" (the ENTIRE twitch chat during the Jake vs. WaDi set was "Jake where's your fundies"
Yet there's a reason they're all in twitch chat and not there competing. There are no characters in ultimate ban worthy (as of now, who knows if game breaking tech is discovered) and any character can beat any character on any single day
The real question is do they REALLY LIKE playing as Steve? Or do they only do so because they feel as though it's the only character that they can win with?
First rob was the most hated character in the game, now Steve has taken that crown for the reason that people think he’s op, but it’s just people not knowing the matchup. As shown in this set, Steve is not an immortal god that people think he is.
steve can combo you with a wooden sword from any% to 70 with up tilts and up airs, can make walls, remove ledge, has a down tilt that is +5 for the steve on shield, can cancel his down smash and down air, has the best side b in the game, is the only character in smash history along with brawl metaknight to be able to do 3 up airs in one short hop, can combo his up tilt into fair, which combos into up tilt, and will get stronger if you don't approach them

Sure, he has bad matchups, and isn't brawl meta knight by any means, but you can't deny that he is top tier, at least top 20 minimum. Also, poor disadvantage? He practically lives offstage with blocks, minecarts, and anvils, he can stay offstage for a very long time, not to mention elytra which has great maneuverability.
@@jetkirby3981 is patience waiting for Steve tp get diamond which kills at 60 for free after hitting easy confirms
@@Junr777 Yeah, I feel like people underrate his disadvantage too much. I just personally feel like people don't know how to use Elytra because of how difficult it is to handle and don't use blocks to mix up landings enough.
I played Steve on release, and the hate for him was practically instant. I was already doing pretty well at my locals using Samus and K Rool, but once I started playing Steve the credit started swaying more towards my main. When someone is yelling mid-set about how annoying your main is, and how there's nothing they can do, when you've literally shown them what to do in all the scenarios they get in, it's a bit hard to want to continue the set.
he would’ve won if he just learnt how to mash
Stev Cring thats bout it
Steve haters are more annoying than the people who play Steve
