It feels like I'm doing something illegal watching this video - I can't believe such a concise and well-edited video like this can be found on youtube for free. As someone who's about to start studying classical guitar and composition after summer I'm happy to have found this channel!
This episode cleared away so much of the mystery surrounding contrapuntal techniques. As someone who likes to write music every now and then, I'm grateful to you for your explanation. This may be my favorite video from your channel, and that's saying something!

I'm bingewathing your movies... in no particular order. And I'm fascinating by those bottles behind ... varying in colour, degree of emptiness and strengths :) I'm monitoring their fluctuation from one video to another and I do envy your liver!!!! :) :) :) Cheers!
Amazing! How pleasant it is to find such a revealing analysis of elements that made me smile with joy when I sang Montervedi's Magnificat as a young man. I can't thank you enough!
What gorgeous recordings! I was at first simply amazed at how simple, but effective technique was at the beginning, but holy sh!t the more and more examples you provided, I was starting to be completely blown away by how intricate but perfect(?) it sounds. I usually thought I preferred faster renditions of those Monteverdi clips, but holy crap. So far, it's this technique that has most reminded me of "the music of the spheres".
Oh okay this was something I was doing for compositional exercises without realising it for synthwave stuff. Thank you so much, I can now develop this further for Harpsichord compositions using this as a starting point! Wonderful channel! :)
I have been studying composition for about 1 year and I am finally starting to see how music is sculpted rather than just bursting into existence, this video really demonstrates that :) awesome
Very nice and well explained hypothesis. The sequence repetition in fact allows this kind of behaviour and expansion, opposed to the more puzzle-like fugas of late baroque composers as Bach. Congratulations for the approach.
Brilliant! I’m always excited to see a new EMS video in my feed. And I’m always astounded by your excellent production values, as well as your ability to effectively and entertainingly communicate what is often very complex subject matter.
Well done! And isn't it so wonderful, so completely magical, that this music moves us even now, more than four hundred years later - listening, I got that peculiar and special shiver that one gets from truly excellent music.
Brilliant as usual. Your point about this not being found in the sources is interesting. I wonder how modern this sort of "algorithmic thinking" about music actually is.
Dear Elam - once more: What a great, wonderful piece of work! So entertaining, so inspiring. So easy to follow, and yet deeply profound. And so well presented! Thank you (and all your helpers/colleges) very, very much! 🙏Benno
Hello Elam I really appreciate your channel, and all the knowledge you share with us. It is refreshing to be able to partake of the beauty of all your efforts which enrich our lives. Please, keep up the excellent work you do. Blessings; Stan, from Canada.
Another absolutely delightful video. Thanks so much. You've packed so much fascinating information into this episode that I expect to be studying this video for some time to come. Thanks so much!
I like Zarlino wagging his finger at Monteverdi. Artusi would be happy.

Elam, Peter Schubert, & Robert Gjerdingen should be the head music teachers of all of America

You just have to love Monteverdi's vocal works; they are just so beautiful.
Great Video.
And the PDF is also very clear
Many thanks!
Wonderful. I admire and learn a great deal from all of your work. Thank you!
The videos are getting better and better - clearer and exposing things by step. I wish I'd paid more attention in undergrad counterpoint!
Mr. Rotem, if I were a rich man, you could bet you'd have a very generous patron!
Another awesome video. What I would like to see in a future episode is how this develops into the fugue form that we all know and love.
Excellent video! You got a fan! 💪👏👏👏

I mostly compose Jazz but find great interest in what you have presented, can see how I can use some of these ideas in a modern Jazz context.
The syncopated version occurs almost "neumatim" in Contrapuntus V from Bach's Art of Fugue!
