Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the acoustics have to do a lot with that? Especially for players like Elliot Mason that have a brighter tone, it seems to me like spaces and microphones like these don't pick it up very well. Its one of the big problems when trying to record a mid range instrument like trombone. Even people like Wattrous and Green can have their sound altered negatively by the spaces they play in. Get him playing in a mic and I'd imagine it would be a lot nicer (although I personally did really like his playing in this clip).

I will try and finish my statement. My personal preference is for the players of yesterday who had beautiful tones including
Si Zentner and Bob Havens. I am stuck in the past. Just my preference.
