Yes it is possible to play Online with Mechassault 2, but only through either Original Hardware or an Xbox 360. No emulator functions for Mechassault 2 at this time.
However with the Rebalance mod, MA1 is actually more fun then MA2 at this point, especially considering the new maps added to the game
