For the cartridge slot problems I've had great luck on everything from a SNES to a GBA and even DS Lite with just putting a bunch of IPA on the pins of a game and then cycling it in and out and drying it a bit with canned air. So a bit like a combo of the Clean Boy method and the IPA + toothbrush method you mentioned, but I think an actual cartridge is able to get into the deepest parts better than a toothbrush. I've never had this damage a game as far as I can tell, *but* I do tend to reach for a game I don't care about as much to be the cleaning cartridge just in case.

I have two GBCs with sound problem. One does work with a headphone connected, the other doesn't show any sound. I thought I should change both speakers, but you gave a little more clarity about what else I can check on them! Thanks a lot for this video!
For the one that has sound only through the headphone jack, I’m assuming the problem is the headphone Jack thinking there’s something always plugged in, or just a bad speaker. I would just try all of those steps listed before a capacitor swap.

@@JakeSimmons hmmmm how could i check this? or what kind of repair should i do to try to stop? i also got a multimeter but still no clue on how to use it 😂
I've done tons of them and also struggle sometimes using a soldering iron. It's a billion times easier with a hot air gun. Same method as he is showing, but the hot air will easily release it after a few seconds.
The noise on the GBC is been an issue of mine. But I see you do capacitor C38, other youtube videos do C32 capacitor. Any thing that makes a difference if you do only one of those instead of all 3?
So mine turns on but no sound or screen imagine it’s blank I remove the time clock crystal is there any chance I blew a fuse next to it? How do I check or know?
my gbc works fine but doesnt work with a DC cable. the cable works, i tested on another gbc. i tested f1 and f2 fuses and f2 seems not to have continuity. could it be the cause of not turning on with the cable? thanks
@@JakeSimmons I replaced the original "R" switch with a "clicky" one , at first it worked, however after a while it continues to give continuity as if it were always pushed. I checked the solder points and even re-soldered it in case it was wrong and still it didn't work. Days later I changed both switches again and now the one doing that is the "L". I thought there was a scratch or something on the pcb but everything looks fine. So i dont know what it could be 😅. Pst. Sometimes when i turn it off and turn it back on after a while it works fine for like a minute.
Hey Jake! I got this GBC here that will read cartridges enough to have no error message on the startup screen (it says "Nintendo" with no blurr) but after the startup screen it just boots to a blank white screen. No matter what cart I use and I'm using carts that are fully functional on other devices. I've tried cleaning the cart reader a bunch of times. I haven't tried replacing it yet. Do you think a replacement would solve the issue or it sounds like a smaller malfunctioning component?
In my experience, it’s only ever been the cart slot or me so replacing it could work, it’s just a tough one to swap. I would try reflowing the solder in case any of them have a bad connection to the board before attempting to remove it

check the volume wheel you can bridge two of its legs to bypass it and check if the problem its from there
thank you i fixed my childhood game boy color with these video
I’m having so much trouble getting the power switch cover off to clean the track. Watching your tutorial makes me feel so incompetent 😅
Oh I still struggle with it don’t worry. Some are tougher than others!

Slide a razor blade (craft knife works too) between the metal at the top of the switch to help pry it up as you are desoldering the shield. ^^
Whenever I try what he done, the whole switch comes off not just the metal part
@@JakeSimmons I once broke one in half (the black plastic slot), so i had to replace all of it... I managed to replace it and now its back alive!

Nice video Jake!! Greetings from Spain ❤🙌🏻🇪🇦
Your videos helps me a lot!!

Will this solve the problem of a dark, Game Boy color light and it running for like a minute and then shutting right off?
Very interesting, thank you.
Nice. Mine won't turn on after leaving it in my car for a few hours on a hot day. I tried putting in new batteries but that didn't work. Any ideas?
Hey Jake will you fix my Game & Watch?
It’s DC!
The Game and Watch isn't real, it can't hurt you.
Is 91 percent isopropyl alcohol okay to use instead of 99
Where do you get the cartridge you use for troubleshooting?
Hi Jake, where should I solder my wires for phono jacks on the Gameboy Color? Can’t find any info only for the DMG. Thanks!
This video is awesome!!!

@@alx.santosm is it IPS modded? You might want to check if your wires to L and R aren’t getting pinched
